KLG poachers

I just got a call from one of my friends who said that people were fishing the gorge this past week or weekend with powerbait and not only that they had a stringer of 15 trout between the two of them not one over 15". Apparently they were proud of their catch showing everyone that passed by. :beingsick:
Several others saw these guys and someone said they called Shannon's.
My question is what the best course of action if this situation is encountered again. Is calling the police an option or do only rangers inforce the park rules? I would think it's very difficult to a ranger out there since there are proably so few to begin with.

call fish and game first.get their license plate number because nj does not have enough people employed to enforce fish and game laws.

I was at the KLG yesterday and there were cars driving up and down the road beyond the gates. This was from the Hoffmans side down. The gates have no locks on them and anyone/everyone can open them and drive on through....

Similiar to the original post who do we call to report this to?

Also has anyone seen the sign at the top that says "handicap parking .8 miles ahead"? Its pretty confusing and doesn't tell people they need to drive around the long way to get there......

are here gates on both sides? Next time bring two chains and a couple of locks, then call the CO

The word POACHER appears on a thread and the GIRL SCOUT TROUT rats start appearing.

They are here to protect their own.

The lads with the stringer, did it appear they were wearing a GST hat and tee shirt?

Thanks for stopping by Gman.... where you heading now PA?

Local police can enforce all state laws (i.e fish and game violations) though they seldom bother to do so. The main issue is knowing which municipality to call when you are in the field. The Gorge is primarily in Lebanon Township, which I believe is covered by the State Police.

Barring that call the Operation Gametheif Hotline at 800-222-0456 which we should all have in our cellphones by now.

Lebanon Township, High bridge & Tewksbury have their own Police forces...Califon is patrolled by Washington Township...

Locals rarely know fish and game laws...

When I read the first post of this thread I flung open my cell for the Operation Gamethief # only to find you had beaten me to it. I've used it as recently as last Nov. or Dec. for deer poachers and the CO showed up in about 12 minutes and caught the both of the guys about 2 hours later:) I had given them the license plate and make and model of the pick up they were driving in as well.

Just a thought, we are all locals somewhere... I'd definitely try to get the cops in the mix, can't hurt! The more the police hear people bitch about poaching the more likely they will be to act, I assume. Where are the fish and game guys? I got checked at Point Mountain in Feb when way fewer people were fishing, you would think they'd be more aggressive when it's warm outside.

You got that all wrong, it was "KLG" that got our attention, that's the only water the GST crowd knows....

Locals as in Local Police...They tend not to enforce game laws because they dont know the game laws and regulations..

Is there a bag limit on chubs and carp in Jersey?

If there is, well, I suppose it'd technically be considered poaching. Call the authorities - if they have been properly refrigerated, those chubs could probably still be released and revived.

Like others probably said, definitely call the NJ Fish & Wildlife Conservation Officer FIRST and not the police (Really, that's almost always a waste of time in these matters. Might not even respond and if they do they won't be in a hurry to get there) The CO is the one responsible for enforcing the hunting & fishing regs and patrolling the waters there (it's a wildlife management area, not a park.) You can get the name & # from Shannon's and then save it to your cellphone, a bunch of anglers do this. It makes reporting thes incidents easier and more efficient. Try to get a license plate # or a description of the individuals and what they were wearing, etc. this is crucial for the responding CO.

Shouldn't this thread and Ryan R be over on GST ?

Now if DenisF was here, he would have already set up a sting operation in the Gorge.

While I appreciate the sarcasm intended, I just want to point out that there are actually laws in place again wasting the resource. i.e. catching chub and tossing them into the grass. Also there is a limit of 25 fish in total for all species (including carp and chub but excluding baitfish). so yes if a person has a bucket with 30 sunfish they have exceeded the limit and are in violation of bag limits.

I think the issue here is that we trout fisherman consider the trout sacrosanct and want laws valuing them more than other fish. when we should be protecting the water quality and demanding high standards of ethics and behavior from all anglers.

(As an aside I have had to stop keeping panfish because I reached my limit, and sunfish batter dipped and cooked in bacon fat with a cold beer, taste a bucket load better than trout almondine with a fine white wine.)

thats not fair...everything is better when bacon is involved

I agree that habitat needs to be respected, and even the chub should not be subject to the whim of the KLG poachers.

As an aside, I have tried to cook up bluegill- too many bones! Yuk!

My question is what the best course of action.

You best course of action is to stay out of it. Everyone and there brother has to have their nose in someone else's business today. Did your friend talk with them?? Maybe they are ill informed, were they all trout? Did you see this or is this hearsay from a friend of a friend. If they were telling all these folks it doesn't sound like they understood the laws.

In the end we all eat from the same table, but as a whole we are "are worst enemy"

Stay out of it? Why on earth should law-abiding anglers not engage in doing their part to portect the resource from poaching, whether intentional or due to ignorance? And there's no excuse for any licensed angler not knowing the basic regs and creel limits, either by reading the regs digest or the multiple signs posted all along the streams in special reg areas like the KLG? Ever hear of SPORT- Sportsmen Policing Our Ranks Together. There are precious few CO's out there so therefore it's up to hunters & anglers to help out by reporting clowns just like this.

We all have to be our own Fish and Game officers. Self policing our "home waters" and informing those that don't know the law is one of the best ways to protect the limited fishing resources that we have. The F&G departments nationwide have fewer and fewer employees each year, and they depend on us to help take care of what we have.

Your sounding like a cop on TV, when they make an arrest on one of those TV shows. I want to help you, be honest LOL and they bang the guy, if he just kept his mouth shut. WCO's love to bust like anyone in law enforcment. It's there high otherwise they would be giving out alot more warnings.

My piont is policing isn't going to stop anything, if anything it's going to make people go deeper and take more. Sad but true. Your always going to have polecat outlaws and the more you go tattle tailing the more they are going to take. Like anything when a poacher has nothing to loose he feeds off it. Then you have you guys that are forced to bend the laws to keep up with the standards that many outdoors man place on them. Some of the big writters always seem to get caught since they need that notch for there next article. Does that mean that everyone is a polecat NO.

perhaps we do sound like cops. That is how much I love a good healthy fishery. If we(responsible fisherman) let the poachers know that they are being watched, and calls are put in to a CO EVERY time you see someone poaching(getting a limit, going to the car, coming back and getting another limit), the chance of them getting busted is higher, which better protects our fishery. The laws are put in place to help manage the fishery as best as possible.

Perhaps, but when the "polecat outlaws" can't pay the fine, they go to jail. Can't poach fish in jail, except in a saucepan!

So you say "more policing isn't going to stop anything", the "HELL" it won't.
You hit jerkoffs:finger: like this in their pocketbook they will think twice about even fishing there again let alone poaching.
They would have to be a total fuckin Moron, not to.
Do you think that someone robbing stuff and they get caught, and then get out on bail are going to steal twice as much as they were busted for in the first place, right after they get out.
Maybe someone who has a death wish mite but not your run of the mill "piece of shit" poacher.

I'm not sure I understand this argument. Is it "poachers are going to poach anyway so let them be or they will become even worse poachers"? That's what I am interpreting.

Should we leave all murderers alone in hope they murder less or don't murder again? Where's the rationale in this?

If I see someone blatantly poaching as sounds like was the case here with blatant disregard for F&G laws, then you can believe I will call the COs first and get as much info on the poachers as I can (license #, car license/make/model, physical description of the poacher/s, etc.) as I'm talking to the dispatcher or the CO after dispatch contacts him.

What is it, $125 buck a pop for fishing 'outside of regulations"?
