If you only could use two flies....

Simms recently told us he is fishing the annual Ausable 2-fly tournament... where you select you two best flies that will bring in the largest trout of the day.

So here's the question -- if you had to select only two flies to use for a day of fishing in a tournament situation, what would they be? Let's just say the day begins at 7am and ends at 6pm.

It's a tough challenge because you're fishing all sorts of different water throughout the day, and you want to entice the biggest fish but at the same time -- you have to think about whats going to be happening in the water with insects, etc.

typically the biggest trout come in on nymphs in my experience, and often an emerger will make a big trout work less to get their protein than one where they have to completely rise (dry fly).

So with that said, here are my selections:

1) Wooly Bugger. I find that big trout want the meat, and even if there is a hatch on I've been able to toss a bugger behind a big boulder or the head of a pool and come away with a much bigger trout than those slashing the surface of the water. From early in the morning, to mid day, to late at night -- this is a go to fly for me that consistently takes the biggest fish in the run. Often I'll use variations of this simple pattern, whether that means using slightly different materials to create a "buggier" look or a variation in the way its tied so that it could also be mistaken for a stone fly or small cray fish -- the one constant though is that trout everywhere nail the thing. It's indispensable, and definitely the first fly on my list.

2) Caddis Emerger. Can be fished so many different ways - in the film dead drifted, swung, weighted, stripped, held in the current.... and mid day in late may / early june when the caddis are out in droves up in the ADKs, you better be sure the trout are taking them. Hopefully a nice one cares to indulge.

So those are my selections... what say you all?

Olive/Black bugger - You can fish it dead drift like a stonefly or on a tight line like a streamer with or without stripping action.

Hares Ear wet - Can be fished as above, as an emerger, or greased in the surface film to fool risers.

I am hosed if there is a full out match the hatch situation though.

Though I'd hate to be stuck nymphing the whole day:
#8 black Tungsten Kaufmann's Stone
#14 red Copper John

yeah -- sometimes unmatching the hatch doesnt do it for you. good selections though

you know of all the stoneflys ive caught fish on, ive NEVER caught on a kaufmann, brown or black. ive tried it so many times too, just never seems to produce for me. it looks so realistic too.

Kinda funny, it's always a solid bet for me when I fish pocket water. I also like the wired stone, which is basically copper+black wire, peacock, goose biots, and a bead. Even without lead it sinks like a rock.

#18 BHPT tied on a curved shank hook.

Black woolly bugger for catching the big ones.

it is funny, i fish a flashback copper ribbed black stonefly that works for me. it has a narrower profile and usually produces when not much else is working. but i cant tell you how many times ive put on a big ass kaufmann and....

nada.

i guess it really is all in the confidence you have.

In a one-fly or two-fly contest, something you need to consider is picking a fly/flies that can be used with a larger tippet. Sure, a size 20 fly may be more appropriate for water on a given day, but you're also much more likely to lose it before the day's over. I guess being a two-fly rather than one gives you some cushion here -- fish the smaller one until you lose it and then tie on a big honkin' streamer on 2x.

The other possibility is to compromise, fish a medium sized fly, but in a way that minimizes risk of losing it. I've been lucky enough to win several one-flies by swinging a wet fly on 4x tippet. Since it's near the surface, it's far less likely to be lost on a rock.

You probably also want to avoid a fly that's over specific. If you choose a fly that works great for you in the hatch you're anticipating, you risk being skunked if that hatch doesn't materialize.

Most of the big name one-fly contests (I don't know about two-flies) are won by streamers.

gray mercury RS2 and maybe another RS2 in a different color (i.e. olive for bwo nymph/emerger).

I'd use a BH Hares Ear #12 and elk hair green caddis that I would fish dry or wet.

Lots of variables here like weather, time of year, location, etc.

That being said, if I were fishing the Ausable two fly contest I'd go with an Ausable Wulff up top and a fat black stonefly nymph for the bottom. I've had success with the two rigged together up there, but I guess you dont want to lose both in one pop in a contest.

14 - dark olive La Fontaine Emergent Sparkle Pupa
14 - elk hair caddis

Ideally I would fish 2 nymphs, but chances are it would be a short day, also I get bored fishing sub-surface all day. The sparkle pupa works great in still film as well as a mid-depth drifter so it tends to stay off the rocks and sticks. Both of these flies have fooled fish from Oregon to NY for me so they make me feel more confident as well, and I think that helps the game.

I can't speak to the Ausable, but assuming the tournament was in mid-May in NW Jersey, the Poconos, or Catskills my choices would be a Copperhead Nymph, and a brown fluttering caddis. You did say 7am to 6pm, but if it ended at 9PM I would replace the caddis with a sulphur pattern.

This tourney goes by total inches of live trout released in mostly public rights water. Czech Nymphing. B/C very few trout hold over in this section, you have to go for the stockers that have been in for about 3 weeks as of now. Czech Nymphing. Winning the thing will be all about putting lots of hatchery browns on the card. Czech Nymphing. B/C you are only allowed 2 flies, you need to be adaptive to your set up without the usual 3 fly rig. Czech Nymphing. Replacing the middle "anchore fly" with a split shot will do the job. Czech Nymphing. Use a heavy leader/tippet set up so you can retrieve your nymphs. Czech Nymphing. Fish only water where substraight isn't going to cost you your rig. Czech Nymphing. You are not after every fish in the run, just the stupid ones that add to the total. Czech Nymphing.

This public service announcement brought to you by the subliminal messaging center. Czech Nymphing.

Haha, I always thought that was my technique! Those Czech's, they are always one step ahead of me!

Can't argue with papabear's logic...the only thing that works better than an bead headed olive bugger (varigated black & olive chenille w/ brown hackle) and a brown caddis emerger would be garden hackle....

If I only had 2 flies to carry with me they would have to be a Cased Caddis (present tail for the case can give pattern if wanted) and a size 14 bead head Prince Nymph.

My top fly up there is deff the prince. hotwire or regular. as for my second fly im having difficulty choosing. was toying around with the idea of a streamer, but if theres a caddis hatch the fish go nuts.

Btw, is anyone else gonna be doing this tournament with simms and i? or even be fishing up there on the 20-23rd? if so let us know.

Sorry guys, I'm not gonna make it up. Sticking closer to home with a float on the Lehigh on the 22nd. Good luck.

I'd go with an emergent sparkle pupa and a tan caribou caddis dry.

I'd switch the dry with a beadhead bugger in high water.
