Weekend report

FIN-ITE 34

Well-known member
Saturday I fished an upper Pocono river, hoping to get in another day equal to a week ago fishing a sulphur hatch that started at about 3 pm.

I arrived late morning and as usual started off by nymphing a productive run in the lower river. The week before I broke off a very nice fish and I thought I'd have another go with that fish. I worked that run for an hour without a touch, changing up flies and weights, knowing that run had to be holding fish. The fly change that made the difference was gray Czech nymph with a hot pink mid section. It produced three nice browns from 14" to 20"

I nymphed up a few more smaller fish as I made a few moves up river to the area that I wanted to be in for the possible sulphur hatch. At about 5 pm a small number of sulphurs began to emerge, but not enough to get the fish interested. I hung around till about 7 pm without seeing any additional activity except for one or two fish taking what looked to be caddis emergers. So I tied on a Grobert favorite, an Iris Caddis and promply caught two small browns fishing it in the film. With that I walked back to the car and headed home.

Sunday I worked around the shop until I couldn't stand it anymore and since it was late I decided to make a late day run to the infamous Pequest TCA. I arrived streamside around 1 pm and was surprised how many cars were both parked along the road and in the parking lot on such a dreary day of cold and light rain.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the killer "fly" for the Pequest is Jeff Blood's Blood Dot. It probably should be classified as bait and banned from the river.
I can't tell you how many fish I caught as I lost count of all the rainbows that fell sucker to the Blood Dot.
At 3 pm the rain started to pick up and I had just about had enough for one day, I noticed that there were a few fish across from me that were taking something from just under the surface. I had only seen a few caddis emerging and so I again tied on a greased up Iris Caddis and in short order had three rainbows to hand. I figured that was a good way to end the day and headed home.
