Passaic headwaters

Can anyone steer me to specific places to access the upper Passaic in the Mendham area? I hear there are wild trout and would like to give a try.

this should be an interesting thread... you probably wont find too much help lots of people are able to access it pretty easily. not that i know where they do

actually from what ive read the pequannock has wild trout and thats the upper passaic.

you could use google maps and find where the passiac officaly starts and the closest road to park on.

im actually going to do that now just for sh*^$ and gigs

behind the grain house in B'ville is the Passaic and there some public access in or just below Lord Sterling park. Also try near the Audubon Society in B'ville. In Mendham try behind the High School. I am not sure that's the Passaic or not but I understand there are a few species of wild trout there. Also in Mendham, there is some public access on India Brook which may or may not be the head waters of the NB Raritan.

The Pequonock in not the Passaic.

Are you from Baltimore or something? I don't know what this is.

There's very little access to fish the upper Passaic, India brook is a
little more open. Neither really has much beyond 6" trout.

Two main places to fish in the upper wild trout zone of the Passaic: in Jockey Hollow NHP and the Audubon societys Scherman Hoffman Sanctuary.

In Jockey Hollow you need to walk 1/2 mile or so to get to the creek. The closest place to park IMHO is the Cross Estate/Jersey Brigade area.

The Audobon Society lets you fish their property - but you have to ask first! It really isn't a hardship, just go to the office off Hardscrabble Rd and ask. They basically want to explain the rules and let you know if they are running any programs they don't want people fishing through. Back a few years someone here was all bent out of shape because he was thrown out after fishing without asking and then getting huffy when asked to get permission. Audubon Society has been on conservation organization that has been fisherman friendly and there is no need to be rude.

The stream is full of tiny maybe 6" wild rainbows and an odd wild brown. Development in Mendham and the flood/drought cycle of late has not been kind to the upper Passiac fish, but they are still hanging in there.

In my experience there, trout numbers are down significantly from just a couple of seasons ago. Specifically, much fewer fish of targetable size and even after the rains, much less water holding fish.

With what is already available from the state, online, and shoptalk, I have to say I find the practice of discussing WTS access questionable.
