Nice to know the owner Dennis ties his own flies in the shop

You better believe that the owner's live by that

Nice post, a good shop and Dennis will always tell you the truth on the
fishing conditions. His patterns are very effective and most are fairly
easy to tie.

Right on about Dennis. You can call up the shop whenever and they'll tell you honestly whether it is worth the drive based on fishing conditions.

AK,
This is a very good post, your giving exposure to the local guys, and your patronizing their shops is a boost they could use.
In this day of internet, and LARGE retail stores the little guy has slipped out of our minds. These posts may bring them back to the forefront

Thanks

Brk Trt

Dennis knows everything which can be real useful. I like the folks across the street. They're nice.

His small parachute BWO dries are the best. One of the few flies I don't tie myself and always make a point to stock up on. I also buy my NY non-resident license there almost every year and send lots of clients his way. His was the first FF forum I ever went on, I think.

BTW, the sandwich place across the street is to die for, check it out next time in town. Buffalo something or other...

This picture is amazing, because it shows Buffalo Zach's in its first location. Now, they are a BIG restaurant on the corner of Stewart Avenue, not just a sandwich joint.

In the place of the shop shown in the picture is a Reiki (massage) studio.

Sorry, I'm wrong about the pic...

It shows Zach's in its current location....

Ahh Catskill Flies! I love spending money there. I can't go to the catskills without stopping in. I usually stop even if I am just passing through and not fishing. Dennis is quite the character - we usually end up BSing rather than talking about the fishing. That said, every time he's given me advice it has been spot on. I also respect him very much because he's one of the few shop owners who will tell you not to fish a stream due to conditions.

His wife Ellen is super nice as well. A couple of Brooklynites who moved up there years ago - living MY dream.

Buffalo Zack's is great, though kind of strange. A guy from New Hampshire (who's not named Zack) moves to Roscoe NY to open a western-themed kitschy restaurant. Who cares though, the food and the coffee are awesome!

But, let's not forget the deep fried french toast over at Roscoe Diner.

seems like when ever i go up there i cant help but to buy a couple of his flies

coolkyle do you have pictures and a story to go along with that biggest 2010 trout?

Not a very exciting story. I ended up nymphing the BK all day last May, with a fever and a stomach ache, and it was cold and windy. My buddies didn't do too good, but I managed 3 fish including a huge brown on the fly Dennis suggested that morning.

His name is Peter. He moved to Roscoe to take care of his mom who was terminally ill with cancer. He opened the restaurant in order to cover the cost of the cancer treatment. Taking into consideration he had no previous experience in the restaurant business or interior design, one would have to admit he did an outstanding job! He now owns 2 restaurants and a catering business all in the Catskills.
Its an amazing success story! Unfortunately his mom passed away.

I tried the french toast once and it sat in my stomach for a month. :crap: Never again!

Thanks for the back story. I've never been disappointed by the food there, sandwiches, dinner entrees, steaks etc. What's his other restaurant? I will have to check that out next time I am up there.

Its the only fly shop ill visit when im up that way. great people in my opinion salt of the eath type.

Also my food spots are roscoe dinner for brekky and zach for lunch and dinner.
Great report Ak.

I've heard some negative comments about Dennis from fellow NJ anglers visiting his shop. He makes fun of NJ anglers because he IS from NJ, he's not in any way anti-NJ:)

His humor is lost on some who have no sense of humor of their own, but engage him in conversation and you'll learn a thing or two. And for my fellow grouse and woodcock hunters, Dennis is a bird dog man (setters, but I don't hold that against him).

I've never had problems with Dennis either - maybe because I'm a grouchy old NJ redneck myself.

I had a great discussion with Dennis last year about "match the hatch". He used to be a true believer, but since owning a shop for a while he has tempered his views since every morning a bunch of panicked people stop by with urgent requests for the XYZ fly - it was the only thing they would hit at Cairn's Pool last night and I lost my last one. But after about the sixth person with the same story, but asking for a radically different patter, he has to question the "that's the only thing would take" part.

I have spent many evenings at live bait
, and it is a great bar.

As to dennis, he is a treasure. He ties his flies in the tradition of rube cross.

The next time any of you step into catskill flies, ask Dennis about rube. You will get a hell of a story.
