Site upgrade / Outage...

Well... It's that time again. I haven't performed an upgrade here in quite some time. I've had a few PM's with people describing various minor issues so they'll need to be repaired.

Some may like the changes, some may not. I for one like the idea of seeing all of the most recent posts and the chat box on the home page, so this will stay but may take me some time to figure out. If there's anything you tend to use or would like to see added, please step up now and let me know, otherwise that feature might be history.

I'm going to attempt to preserve everything I possibly can but there's always a chance of failure.

You don't have long so I'll be looking for your insight/ideas in this thread.

At any given time, the site might just become unavailable and it may be unavailable for either a few hours or a few days. Please pass the word around.

I hope to see all of your back once the upgrade is completed.
 
Man!!! The site is changing format and color as I type!!! Cool feature :)
 
The site looks evil now. You just need some heavy metal theme music to be playing in the background, I can help you with that. A little more color here and there will make it perfect though.
 
The ability to use the ignore feature right at the bottom of a post. I miss it very much. Can I have it back please?
 
whoa! talk about going to the dark side!

this cant be the final color combination??

all of the other elements of the upgrade are nice, but the color combo hopefully will change to so eye pleasing colors
 
Just logged on and went "woaaaahhhhhh", WTF is up with the colors? After a few minutes, it actually looks pretty cool.....easy on the eyes for sure. Any other surprises coming? Thanks.

Interesting....... Not bad. I have been too lazy up upgrade my site and i have a fear of loosing everything. The dark will take getting used to.
 
I'm loving the dark. I work on a computer 10 hours a day sometimes more. I find it to be much easier on my eyes.
 
RE: Color
If you don't like the colors, scroll down to the bottom of the page.
There are a few other choices, in a drop-down menu, on the left, in the "bar".....

BTW: I'm getting some error messages in the "Fly Tying Database"

Here is the error I get when attempting to access the home page:
NJpatbee, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

This is was a modification for the previous version of the software I was using. The new modification came out but the developer stopped supporting it. I attempted to install it anyway but no dice. We're going to have to sit this one out. Sorry for now but hopefully in the near future this will be supported again.

I took a look for something remotely close to this but couldn't find it. Is there another site you visit that has this feature? If so, link me up and I'll take a look at it.

Pete/Waterworker, I'll get the Review/Photo post back up and running. I might have to break down and cough up the dough to upgrade. I don't think the versions I'm running are compatible with this new version of vBulletin.
 
DISREGARD the feedback below provided a couple of minutes ago. I found the select menu in the lower left of the page(s) that lets you swap themes. If that option stays, then all's good.

Dennis, for what it's worth and everyone will have a different opinion, the dark colored theme is slick and cool, initially easy on the eyes, but really sucks if there's glare on the screen. Plus white text on a high contrast background is actually tougher on the eyes in my opinion. Ideal would be the ability within your user profile to pick between a light or dark theme. Frankly, if the messages and WYSIWYG were black text on white background, that'd would resolve the issue I'm experiencing. The rest of the theme could stay as-is. That might be an easy CSS change.

Scroll down to "Miscellaneous Options" Choose "Forum Skin". You can change it here. Please be advised that I will be removing a few of these new skins as I don't care for how they format the site. For now, you're more than welcomed to test them out and comment on them. If enough people like a certain item, I will most certainly keep it.
 
Ok... the "HOME" tab is now working but from my point of view, it's in beta. Check it out. There are some links which will still give you permission denied. I know about them already so please don't report them. I'm still trying to figure out how to configure all of the items/options for the "HOME" page. Give me time!
 
Dennis, I think you'd be fine with "bp - brown" and "vb4 default" as skin options. They're very similar, just one is dark and one is light.

The ability to change skins is a great feature. I like the reptile green skin in particular.
 
Nice to be able to change the look on occasion just to change things up.Doing a great job D.First time I've seen a scoreboard on a forum....nice touch.

One issue that has cropped up for me anyway. I get logged off after a certain amount of time. Is there a way to stay logged in longer?
 
hey troutfever I am normally logged in for long periods of time as well and dont logged out unless I do so myself. When the site was upgraded I had to login. Since that time I have had some issues where I am logged out without my doing. Today it seems to be keeping me logged in for that last 6 or 7 hours so perhaps it working.

Dennis just an FYI some of the Google ads block the very top right hand side of the page. Doesnt happen all the time but if its a big ad or if 2 adds appear one on top of the other the top line where notifications and setting are get blocked

Thanks for all you hard work keeping this site up-to-date. Just one comment, I find it hard to distinguish between new and already read posts (bold vs regular type). Thanks again for your efforts. Good fishing.
 
the site has not been upgraded the new format sucks. i was also proud of my groans and they are gone. i am crying like the indian in the commercial. i now know how he felt.
