Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
Have not made it out this season yet but will be working at Warren Tech on weds.--just need a fishy spot nearby that i can try on the way back thru Hackettstown-I am familiar with the river but will be driving a work truck and won't be able to do a lot of recon--should be on the river around 5 pm if work goes to plan--thanks

The Pohatcong is right behind Warren Tech and WCC (easier to get to behind WCC). It's a scratchy walk through a lot of briars, but not many people go back there. You follow the Pohat to the outskirts of Washington. Most spots along Rte 57 from when you pick up the Musky at Penwell all the way to Hackettstown are good. The rivers cools as it heads downstream so nearer Hackettstown is good when it is cold; lower down is good when it is hot. The Point Mtn TCA is generally good. Less people fish from the upper end. Park by Penwell and fish down, but parking at the lower end isn't bad either. Try different spots and see what you like. As we get towards the end of May the hatches will be mostly right at dark. At least I hope so, they have been a little spotty this year and I'm waiting for the dry fly action to break wide open.

did extremely well upstream of the Point Mountain Rd bridge this past weekend. hares ears + caddis + lots of weight = success. park at point mountain bridge and walk the trail upstream.

Thanks for the replies--looks like it might be Thurs. instead--will post my results--thanks again

Was between Pt Mtn and Penwell yesterday (Wed) - water in good shape, sporadic caddis and sulfers all afternoon with no rises other than chubbs - but those slinging lead with poly indicators were taking periodic fish off bottom. About 6PM (which fits your time frame some more sulfers and a few fish began rising as sun went behind trees. Would not restrict yourself to this area of river however - downstream of Pt Mtn Road is some nice water, and a lot less crowded. Be prepared to change strategy as things change on the river. Once rises started I did reasonably well, and was surrounded (at reasonable distance) by two other fishermen who persisted nymphing on the bottom with minimal results by that point. If the trout are feeding on the bottom, fish there and not with dries. But if the fish are on top...

i fish that area too, it's a good learning ground for fly fishing.

i fished KLG after work last night...
Sulphurs came off the handicap pool and under the foot bridge @ 6:15pm... lasted about 30mins followed by drones of caddis.
Stocked browns were taking everything on the surface.
#20 sulphur klinkhammers, white hackle dun post.

Awesome fishing! ..fun closing the place and hiking out in the dark.

Walking out in the dark...if you are going upstream, is risking a broken ankle:)...I love fishing the run by the footbridge...some great dry fly water.....

@Rusty, since when is this news? Point Mountain, Pequest Hatchery and KLG are all renowned kiddie pools.

Since everybody seems to be giving the same fishing report I'll contribute. "The fish have been slow to rise, but tie on a prince nymph and a splitty shot and you'll get yerself some of dem fish fer that dang old fryin pan man."

But yeah, if you're looking for a decent place in Hackettstown you can go to the Alumni Field and fish the cliff or the old concrete diving platform.

KLG was on fire again saturday night dusk till dark.
2 kinds of sulphurs coming off. The light colored one Dorothea, and a darker larger one i didnt recognize (Invarias?)
Had most success fishing a large Klinkhammer pattern Size #12 in a pumpkin orange/yellow, white hackle, white poly post.
Also had a few nice takes on a #14 Comparadun and a small Klink #20 bright yellow, white hackle dun post.

The second fly appears to be a Light Cahill spinner.

Please, the days of secret spots in our area are pretty much over and have been. We all have our favorite underfished sections of stream, but all three of those areas are nice and have excellent numbers of fish, so why wouldnt people go to the "kiddie pools." Not sure what your quote means, but whatever.

Even though the Musky gets more stocked fish than any other NJ river, it remains grossly underfished in some of its best waters. You can never change the pressure from the bridge spot stringer fillers every Friday at 5 pm and again Saturday morning during the stocking season, but anywhere 100+ yards in either direction are just as many fish and they remain year round. Head downstream to the river's best water and never see another angler all day with miles of open water to explore. Most people think that Hampton Borough Park is the lower river, but that is merely mid-river. Once we yank down the Warren Glen Mill dam, that nearly 2 mile stretch will become as popular as the KLG TCA overnight and help spread the love. Same goes if we restore the Wattles property which is the one mile stretch immediately below the Point Mountain TCA on general regs waters.

I fished 2 of 3 listed kiddie pools last weekend...

Saturday we fished the mighty hatchery stretch of the pequest.
the water was mud brown but just fish-able. managed a few on flashbacks.
Had more fun watching fish and game ticket Pedro and his worm dunking buddy under the hatchery bridge.
They were both having a great day until the heat came down .... and confiscated their bag of dead trout.
New regs as of last week... Adios Amigo!

Fished the Gorge on sunday afternoon and again had allot of fun with flashback and emergers.
Many fish hooked on a trailing size #20 Beadhead Prince with an ice blue flashback.

Monday i fished large #12-#14 sulfurs all day and caught fish till my arm was sore.
then i passed out and had rising trout dreams all night until work on Tuesday morning.

In addition to the fines, they should make the offenders chain gang a cleanup of all those damn blue plastic bait containers that are lining the bank. Funny how they can carry them around when full of bait, but when they are empty, they seem to be too heavy to carry out. I have a few on the floor of my car that I picked up when leaving on Monday.

The pequest is not to far of a drive for me, but I am always disgusted by people when I go so I have been avoiding it.

There's plenty of uncrowded parts of the river. I wish I lived closer and couldn't imagine avoiding it altogether.

I will agree. The Pequest has a lot more spots than the TCA. If I'm in the mood for dry fly action the TCA is the last place I go. Even in the TCA there are lesser fished places if you are willing to walk and at the walk in spots above and below the TCA you will see nobody. And the mouth of the Pequest and the rapids in the last 100 yds can hold everything from monster bows to stripers. Yes, the hatchery outfall draws lots of fish (and fishermen) in the heat of summer and the dead of winter. But before the river heats up they are spread out pretty well. Right now the whole river is full of fish.

I can walk to the Alumni Fields area and fish it a fair amount (more for smallies to be honest), but drive to the Pequest more. It is tough because the Musky, Pequest, and upper SBR are all close and all have good dry fly spots.
