1st Annual NEFF Steelhead BASH!

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gents,

Over the last few years, many enemies have been made, yet we all seem to come together, level headed, when were out on the stream fishing. Beetle and I were probably NEFF's biggest rivals. However, now, we are BUDDIES!!! :) We are even planning a private fish hugging Salmon River trip together.

Slim Shady and Chris have fished together all over the eastern seaboard, beetle has fished with Neffers in PA, I have fished people I have met on Neff, Allen has instilled the SPEY BUG into some NEFFERs in the LFZ, CARBLE has hooked many-a-big browns on the Upper D with Neffers as passengers, and BRK TRT, well, he is a phantom so hopefully we can get him up to the Salmon River!

SO, why not further strengthen and build new life long friendships while hooking into medalheads and browns on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY? We all know each other very well via this forum, however it would nice to put a face to the name!

I would like to hold this event sometime in November. Why? Well, those of you who have fished the Salmon River and tribs in September and October are far too familiar with the lead slinging sod busters and standing room only river access. While the air temps are very pleasant, as the fish are plentiful, it is not an experience I would reccomend to any new comers to the area. I do suggest you atleast witness it one time in your life, however for our trip, I would prefer to start off on the right foot.

It is like clock work, every November 1st, the ABSURDLY priced hotel rooms drop to an affordable level, bars begin cutting back on their Nantucket Nectar pruchases, and Pulaski begins settling in for its long an people-less winter. BUT, with November 1st, comes STEELHEAD SEASON BABY! Everyone you meet on the river is extremely nice and accomodating, patterns are passed around, and stories are told, without the need to constantly look over your shoulder at hurdling lead and bush light cans. It is a wonderful time of the year, temps are about 45-55 degrees on avg, and fish are PLENTIFUL AND HUNGRY!

I want to get an idea and see who would be interested! Due to the fact I will be taking off a few days from work over Thanksgiving, I would prefer to be atleast (2) weekends back from thanks giving, if not (3). I am sure your wifes/gf's would appreciate that as well.

As for food, I will bring grill and we can just designate a dish/drink to someone...Someone bring burgers, someone bring dogs, etc. OR, we can scrap the idea of cooking and head to AK SKIM's BAR! Because frankly, if it is going to be one of those bitter Novembers, I for one do not want to be cooking outside. Would be nice to have a mid day rest inside a warm establishment, as well as dinner.

I will also have my new cateraft, so those of you who want to float, step right up. I would do a float from pineville to 2a or Almar to Pineville so I would be able to take a few people throughout the day, instead of the usual Altmar to the ballpark float, which takes all day...

So, please repond with any questions/comments/ or concerns! Lets get this going! Thank you guys!!!!

:smiley-sniffer:

as stated, i will prob be in altmar/pineville nov 16-20. there is the outside chance that we will flip the order this year and be there the 11-15 or even possibley 11-14 and again 18-21. Regardless, dont schedule around me, just posting the info if it helps make a decision (like, when best to have the weekend to avoid me showing up and stealing your beer).

Weekends I KNOW definitely that I will be up there are;

Thursday night the 10th through Sunday the 13th.
Veterans Day weekend.

Wednesday night the 23rd through Sunday the 27th.
Thanksgiving.

So either way you can count me in.

LMAO!

Ed,

No worries my friend, well see what works best for everything. I am thinking the 11-13th or 4th-6th...

Last year during the first week of november (2010) the water temperature was still in the low 50's, then the night of 11/8 the rains dropped the river temperature nine degrees to 44 degrees.

The dam release was at 750 cfs, Pineville gage was 952. The increase was from the run off.

It was windy and cold.

Altmar to Pineville was still receiving the most fishing pressure.

The pools that were still producing very well was;
LFZ
Altmar
Schoolhouse
Frazier's Run
Trestle
Refrigerator
Sportsman
RT. 2A
Town Pool
Long Bridge

There were still some very nice places to get away from the crowd and do some fishing.

So dress warm, and for rain.

Don't be a sissy. Float 2A to the Black Hole!!!

Chris you can take out at the black hole? SHITTTT, never knew it.

nNow that I know it, you cabn bet your bottom dollar youll see a grey catchercraft parked just upstream on the main channel side from the bottom of the island below the ballpark ;) Steelhead central right there... :)

Just have to make sure the gate on River Street isn't pad locked.

Last year everytime I passed by it was locked.

You can anchor right in front of the crazy womens property. I called her and she said it OK

So soon, so soon.

I want to start the bidding on the weekend of the 11th-13th.

For those of you who dont mind employing the 8mm & 10mm flies, I have been painting up some with my favorite colors in preparation for this event :)

Note: this only a fraction of what I have. Needless to say, the ladies at CVS dont believe me that the nail polish is for fishing ;)

Beiber fever,

I have gear I would be more than happy to lend you for the day/weekend. It is not a problem at all.

The CVS gals are shocked, when the Sally Hansons goes on sale and I stock up.

I'm in for the Steel Bash.

Four months away is never too soon to get the dates on your calendar.

Sounds like everyone is in for the second weekend in November 12-13th.

Veterans Day is Friday, November 11th, those who are off that day from work
will be able to make it a three day weekend on the Salmon River.

Will look into group lodging to keep your costs down.

Since SIMMS has come up with the idea, I will appoint him

Event Chairman of the 1st Annual NEFF Steelhead BASH.

All in favour say aye..

Aye.

OK gentlemen,

The weekend will be the 12th-13th of November. As AK SKIM stated, this will give the opportunity to most anglers to head up EARLY on Friday morning as it is Veterans Day. More time to sore lip the medal heads! :)

Basic gear you will need is a 7-9 weight, floating line (but if you have a sinking line bring it. You never know what the boys at brookfield have in store)m CLEATS! Most already have the studs in their boots, however if you dont, I STRONGLY reccomend them!
As far as any other gear, you will just need your "normal" gear you use as well as some warmer clothing.

Once it gets closer, I will post flies/beads/leaders to purchase for those who are itnerested in trying new tactics or need stuff all-together.

Lastly, here is an email Dennis sent me. It covers local lodges as well as a general outline of prices. This weekend will be reletively cheap boys. With the potluck dinner and BYOB, there is NO excuse for not coming! Dennis also has a wonderful covered porch on his lodge, so if it rains/snows (which is most likely will knowing that time of year) we will have cover to grill/drink/ and shoot the shat.

"List of lodges:

Fox Hollow
The Schoolhouse Inn
Whitakers
Altmar Hotel
Malinda's
Double Eagle Lodge
Salmon Haven Lodge
1880 House

and Stoney's... I never think of the places he rents out.
House trailer min. 3 people for $25 each a night, Bunkhouse min. 4 people $35 each per night.
I really don't know what they are like inside.. but I never heard of any one yelling about them.

If we get Stoney's, the food could be cooked over grills and everyone would be together.

One thing I know is fly fishermen are cheap bastards! LOL

Keep the lodging reasonable, bring and cook their own food, and by their beer... doesn't get any cheaper than that.

Pot luck dinners...

Travel round trip up to Pineville $ ??
Lodging for two nights $50
Beer $25
Food $30

Most should already have a NY lic.

NY Lic non-resident
Annual $70
1 day $15
7 day $35

The more people, the less expensive for them.

I have that covered porch 30 x 12 ft so that if it is raining we can get out of the rain and still hang out and BBQ."

Again, the WEEKEND WILL BE 12-3th! With early birds arriving on the 11th!!!!

My vacation is limited and I have been focusing on the Lake Erie area, however if I am in the neighborhood I'll try to stop by and say hello.

Have fun guys!

I was thinking of joining you guys as I have been wanting to get up there for the past 2 years. but I looked at my calender and that is the weekend of the CFFCM's
Art of the Angler show in Danbury CT. I am scheduled to tie at the show that weekend.
If there's any change in plans I will try to make it up.
Sounds like a great weekend.

I will be up there for 5 days the week before, 11/2-11/6. So one of 2 things can happen. I will have a ton of intel as to where and what the chromers are doing (although most, if not all days will be in the DSR) that I can PM to Simms/Chris, or post up.........or, if I play my cards right, should be able to join in the fun on for Friday and Saturday.

Simms, this is a good idea and I give you a solid :applaudit 2 thumbs up for starting this post and organizing it.

If I can go, I too offer to let people try out any of my 6 two-handed rods I can/will bring up.........and bring your sink tips if you have them. I have fought some epic battles on the swing in November......it is surely my favorite month to fish the river.

For those who want to indicator fish (most effective method this time of year), here is an idea of what flies you might need. Too many? nah...........Yes, it's an illness, I can guarantee I will be tying up 200-300 more before steelhead season starts. The pics suck as they were taken with my phone.

I can not wait for this event genetlemen! It will be an epic time where friendships will begin over a few Coronas and Makers Mark ;)

Stayed tuned for more updates!

UPDATES! UPDATES! :)

 • Malinda no longer rents rooms
 • Salmon Heaven has an "e" in it (it's not Salmon Haven) (its ok Skim, you may have had a corona or 2 by the time you typed it, hahaha)
 • Brendas and Cannons are 2 I forgot to include. THEY have great rooms and they are cheap. BOOK NOW THOUGH! November is still a popular time... (next to each other on Rt 48) I am not sure if they do it for November, but I know by the time the white gold begins to fall, their prices drop considerably.
 • Salmon River Outfitters (in Altmar) has two rooms upstairs, one is an apartment - $40 pp/pn.
 • I am not sure Altmar Hotel rents rooms - If anyone calls, please update us. As of April, they redid the WHOLE place soup to nuts, so they may now rent rooms.
 • Trestle Pool lodge has plenty of rooms located right on rt-13.
Start tying! Those of you who need beads, please contact CTOBIAS. Great Lakes Steelhead Company is manned by 3 stand up gentlemen who are proven FISH CATCHING MACHINES!
