I'm heading up there to fish Mirimichi next week for 8 days for the first time.....hoping they'll be on bombers but ill swing the wets if I have to hook up.

when you're tying floss bodies spin the bobbin counter clockwise (i think that's the way) so that it spreads out and you will be able to lay it out flatter so that it is a tad larger than the diameter of the hook. This will help achieve a cleaner looking fly and help it so you can create the smallest head possible when finishing the fly. Looks good though!

Thanks for the compliments and comments. I gave up on using a bobbin to apply floss around 30 years ago. I apply floss and rap hackle by hand now because I feel it gives me more control. But you're correct about the twist. They key is to keep the floss from twisting but also you need to apply just the right amount of pressure.

Very nice tye Pete ! This fly looks great and it is a fishing fly pretty sure the they won't mind that the body isn't perfectly smooth . If you burnish your under body before you wrap your floss it will provide a super smooth base . When you wrap your floss it will go on shiny and smooth. I like this pattern a lot! Keep them coming!:)

I think the fly looks nice. You don't want your head to be as small as possible rather you want a nice tear dropped shaped head. Remember these flies were originally meant to be waked and a nice head made them track better. Here arre a few tips.Use a drop of head cement at your tie in point before you mount the wing. Then make 8-10 tight wraps. Then I heat up a dubbing needle and burn the butt ends back to the tie in point. Form your head and cement it. This works really well when using harder stiffer hair such as bear or fitch. None of the hair will pull out of your wing and you'll lessen the bulk of your head.
