Ken Lockwood Gorge Fly Fishing Report

Ok, so the title is only 1/2 truth. As you can see, I posted a handful of photographs tonight. I took a stroll through there today with the kids and two dogs, taking pictures along the way. I counted 18 fishermen from Hoffmans down through the second bend past the trestle.

We stopped occasionally to watch a few people fish (and I snapped a few pics) but did not see 1 fish caught.

It was a little chilly but it was a nice day for a walk. I would have loved to see a few fish. I'm thinking this place gets HAMMERED pretty damn good. The trestle parking lot was filled with 4*4's (my daughter asked why all of the cars had 4 times 4 written on them, I thought that was pretty funny).

I'll tell yah, there sure was a bunch of competition there.

One thing that pissed me off... A few people are so god damn clueless, walking their mutts without a leash. What are they thinking? This is so inconsiderate and irresponsible. Don't they have Gorge laws against this kinda crap?

This pisses me off more when the stupid walkers start throwing logs in the river right next to you so their dog can go swim.

The best is yesterday i was fishing upstream and a guy moved above me with his lab and just threw his stick in the water. The dog went howling in after it.That spot was done :finger:.
I counted about 28 trucks yesterday in the gorge.Every pool i was hitting some one just left it gets annoying man.

It's becoming more and more common almost every open water near suburbia has the problem of dog owners bringing their dogs to play in the water right where you are fishing . And even if there is a leash law in effect nobody obeys it . Bamboozle has some good thoughts on this subject as he see's it quite a bit. It does suck to say the least.:crap:

I much preferred the two geese ruining our spot while we were both rigging up. hadn't even gotten a line in the water there yet...

Only Two?? One of my crazy neighbors feeds them...I counted 180 one day...The other day my line had goose crap on it...I wish the CO's would do something about her...It is affecting water quality at Hoffmans...

If the lady near hoffmans crossing is on this forum, I am saying this with no offense. But COMON. When the geese are not there that stretch is fantastic. ESPECIALLY in the winter with those deep holes and in the fall with the over hanging trees fishing large terestrials. But when the geese are there, the spot is crap. Lately whenever I am at the gorge not only is it over crowded, but the people that are fishing it pound the water like there is no tomorrow. The gorge is by no means a large stream, and there is no reason to wade in the middle of the dang water. No offense to the gorge either because I do love it when it fishes well.

Some of these comments are the exact reason why I don't fish the gorge near as much as I used too( once or twice a year as opposed to once or twice a weak way back when) Now it's Pa. Was at the little Lehigh thurs & Fri wasn't overly crowded but most guys were fishing by the hatchery anyway so there was plenty of water and rising fish to fish to. Noticed two strange things tons of fish rising and only one other guy besides me fishing on top. The other was this guy asked me how I was doing I told him good and told him that there were still alot of fish rising. He asked me what I meant by fish rising ?:no: You can imagine my reaction.

you cant be serious....i would thing that even the most inexperienced fly fisherman, would have to know what that meant....too funny!!!!!

I never worry about one or two geese ruining the fishing. Let me tell you two stories:

Several years back I spotted a nice fish rising in a small backeddy. As I was wading into position, a goose--which I didn't notice sitting on the bank--slid into the water a swam downstream within a foot of the trout. All that time the fish, which turned out to be an 18 1/2" wild brown, never stopped rising!

Another time, I spotted what I thought was a big fish rising in a tough spot I could only reach with a long downstream float because of the overhanging trees. As I was getting into position, a mother black duck with five ducklings swam upstream and directly over the fish. It kept rising. After the ducks passed, a family of minks came out of the tree roots on the left bank and swam back and forth over the trout. It still kept rising. This one turned out to be only 14 1/2" and it was also a wold brown.

I suspect that fish become so used to the intruders they often ignore them.

Yeah, that may be correct when it comes to ducks and minks, but you add a man eating bear to the mix and I bet you those trout will flee.

AK have you had some sort of horrible experience with a bear at some point in you fishing career? In my short time here at NEFF I find that a common thread in your posts has to do with your love of the Mexican nectar, your absolute dislike of GST and bears? As always, just wanting to know more!

So I fished the Gorge for the first time yesterday (weird since I only live 40min away) and it was an odd experience. Every good looking spot had someone in it, or in the process of getting to it. Not used to this. Even though I live in Jersey, I know more spots out of state than in state, but the out of state areas I really know well are 300 miles away. Lots of walkers too. Can't blame them since its a beautiful place, much nicer than I imagined. So I picked spots to fish where I didn't think anyone would bother getting to (and where no one happed to be at the time), and caught 1 and lost 1. Caught a third in a pool right by where the trail goes 2ft. by, sight fishing. There we like 5 fish in this spot oblivious to everyone walking by. Took my chances and got one. It must get crazy there when the season officially opens though, no?

And some of the dog owners there need beat-downs for letting their mutts run 100ft ahead of them. Or a good law suit after someone gets bitten.

The observations in this thread are precisely why I LOVE KLG (and the other TCA's for that matter). All are nice places and fish well but they also attract TOO MANY people. Its a different story when they are the only open waters but right now there are no closed streams. Think of how many miles of good open water do people drive by on the way to the gorge. Loved to death, or at least insanity. It's the same thing at the pequest. Drive down 46 you'll see a car here, car there, and a full parking lot at the hatchery!

Oh well more general regs water for me to enjoy fishing in solitude while everyone communes in the TCA's partaking in combat fishing.

I fish the Pequest too, but never at the TCA. Lots of other, good spots to fish on that stream. I fished the TCA once and it was an experience like no other. I caught huge, ugly fish that came in like dead weight. The best part though was I watched these 2 guys get into it with each other and almost come to blows, I thought that they were going to throw-down right there. Lots of shouting, throwing of gear. Very entertaining.

I need to explore the whole northern part of this state a little more, find out what is where.

Well then, I’m kind of glad I over slept yesterday. I was planning to hit KLG for a couple of hours in the morning. I have off Tuesday of next week, maybe I will try then.

Looks like some of my efforts to spread out the anglers are paying off. Drossi gets it:).

I dread needing to fish during the "closed season" in a couple of weeks. Wall to wall anglers pounding the fresh stockers in the TCAs...bring on late April after the stringer-fillers have a freezer full of tomato plant food and then I can fish again in peace on general regs water:D.

GIRL SCOUT TROUT people, do they know you talk about them like that?

Now, now, I post over there too as you know. I just have thicker skin than most:). As for lip-ripping, treble hook throwing lunatics that say they practice C&R, that's a whole other issue...

I try to take a different approach than some of the purists that I am often lumped in with - teach the ones that don't know better and fight for better conservation laws for the ones that know better and don't care. But if it's legal, who am I to tell a lip-ripper to stop? Some will progress to FF conservationists and some will not.

You could always do some bass fishing, right? Or are the big lakes off limits, too?

The only bass I'll be chasing are striped ones with my big two-handed spey rod. And it's still a bit early for the big cows to eat my bunker flies...

No, I'll suck it up and stand with the crowds for a few weeks, just avoiding the busy weekends when I can. If I can pull off my latest dam removal deal I'll be too busy to fish anyway for awhile. Time will tell on that deal.

The Goose Lady at Hoffman's has to be stopped! B-Kill is right we count them by the dozens. There is no excuse for putting out troughs to feed the geese on a daily basis. Her yard is disgusting. As for the Gorge, I agree with the other posts, it is a madhouse at times. We try to steer people to other areas of the river and they've had good results when they're not up to their knees in geese at Hoffman's Crossing. One of my customers was recently bitten by a dog while fishing in the Gorge. When he told the owner what happened, she did not appear concerned. He had to go to the doctor for rabies shots. I'm not kidding! A big problem with the Gorge is that it is a WMA that is really treated like a county park. There are jurisdictional enforcement issues that have to be addressed.-JH

If i was bitten by a dog and told the owner and gotten a response like that i would then bite the owners nose off and then stab the dog :smiley-sniffer:

Seriously its going to take someone getting bitten really really badly for all this malarkey to stop.

I would stab the dog though then take the owner home with me taped up in the back of my truck to be devoured by my pooch j/k

I left a message on the Tewksbury EPA voice mail last night. Hopefully I will get a response. I discussed concerns about the geese and the dogs.

Skipper,
Thanks, I hope we do get a response. I'm not sure if she is in Lebanon TWSP or Tewkesbury but well done!-JH

I will forward my email to these emails. Thank you, and I will send a link to this thread for all of your support on this issue.

Had to leave PETA a message, got through to 911. Help is on the way Jamie. Speaking of crazy, what's up with these emoticons? I nearly have a seizure every time I hit "reply" and see like 12 animated faces vomiting and pooping and flipping me off.
