Allen,
What size hooks are those on? They will be great for the PED hatch on the Schroon this summer. I really like the dark yellow to orange thorax. Our sulphurs get really orange b/c of the tannic water. Did I mention I really like the color?

NICE!,

I think it was because he had a tough time deciding on using Mustad or Tiemco hooks.

Should I pay an arm & leg for a hook that will be lost to the bottom ?

or...

Should I use a hook that will rust and break within 10 minutes in the water?

or...

Should I fishing my HOMEWORK then post on NEFF???

eh, knowing Burt it was the homework and posting....

Carry on lad.

Luckily I'm done with the work and don't have such a dilemma right now....it's more like sleep or NEFF. The room isn't full of feather right now but after a few comparaduns it's gets pretty hairy in here (CornyDog).

Yeah it's a tough choice on the hooks, but now I'm going only premium hooks so you folks will be fishing T.O.L. hooks, Tiemco and Gamakatsu. This is a dry fly so it won't be lost on the bottom...by the way it's a Hendrickson Biot Comparadun, I was late in announcing that too.

AK damn shame you're not in the swap I even tossed two flies (into my own box) because they weren't up to par. I figure for the guy that's seeing my tying for the first time (Joe Dimaggio) I need to make an impression....although there's one that may be a bit slim on the wing or I'm just too picky.

Luckily I'm done with the work.

Ok Burt, say you went to Cookie College and say you were going to graduate this year.

Most likely with the economy the way it is, this is what jobs are our there for you.

Conover by Bkill

hook- Dry Fly 12-18
tail- Cream Hackles
body- Natural Rabbit & Red Wool blend dubbing
hackle- Cream Badger

The Conover was originally developed by Walt Dette for Scotty Conover of the Brooklyn Fly Fishers Club in the 20's.....

In my first years of fly fishing, I walked into Walt Dette's shop and asked him what fly he recommended..He handed me a Conover...He said it is a good prospecting fly...That was 1985, I still use this fly as an attractor on the Beaverkill and Willow...It is a high riding dry and also great for "skittering" presentations...A must have in my Beamoc Box....

You all did a fantastic job! Thanks so much for posting pictures. :hubbahubba:

Hendrickson Biot Comparadun

Hook: Gamakatsu S-10 #14 or Tiemco 100 #14
Thread: Unithread 6/0 Tan
Tail: Dun Microfibetts (tied in pairs on each side for flies #16 & up)
Body: Hareline turkey biot quills Hendrickson color
Thorax: Beck's Pinkish Tan
Wing: Hareline Medium Coastal Deer

Hatches on almost every Eastern trout stream. Here in NJ they come off in early to mid April and in the Catskills maybe later April to very early May.

I tie my biot body in and wrap normally, then I wrap thread back over the body, three wraps covers the whole body, just to reinforce it and the thread is barely noticeable but the extra strength will pay off on the stream because the biots are very weak.

After tying these I also found a technique that's been working well for me. In a Paul Weamer article Tying a Better Compara-dun
He talks about how his good friend and Catskills legend, the late Jimmy Charron, tied his comparaduns. So now I've been tying in the wing with the tips pointing back and then propping it up from behind, this way when the wing begins to lean it leans back like a real mayfly and not forwards unnaturally.

Iris Caddis

Hook: TMC 102Y #15-17
Thread: 6/0 Olive
Tail: Amber Zelon tie slightly down the top of hook bend
Abdomen: Tan rabbbit mixed with clear antron
Wing: Clear zelon tied horizontally over the abdomen
Thorax: Natural hare's ear

The Iris Caddis is one of those patterns that when on/in the water, looks very much like the natural. It imitates the about-to-emerge Hydropsychidae family of caddisflies commonly called the spotted sedge, cinnamon caddis. There are about 11 species in the tri-state area and they are very common and abundant, even in marginal streams. They hatch from May to September, usually in the evenings. Egg laying is mostly in the early AM

When the pupae hatch, they come to the water surface and drift just in the film as they prepare to hatch. They drift for anywhere from a foot to several feet this way before suddenly breaking free of the shuck and flying directly into the air - the adults pop out of the shuck - they do not sit on the surface for even a second. The reason this fly is so successful is it imitates that stage when the pupa is most vulnerable - drifting in the film, helpless as it prepares to hatch. The trout know this, and also knowing that they can hatch in an instant, they will rush the surface to grab the fly, which often carries them all or partially out of the water. Many anglers misstake the takes for trout taking adult flies off the surface and they erroneously fish an adult caddis pattern, which may take a fish or two, but nothing close to what this imitation will. The key to knowing when to fish it is this: if you are on the stream in the evening and you see trout rising fairly aggressively, but no flies on the water and lots of flittering tannish caddis in the air just above the water, fish this pattern. It will take fish!

Live it up,

Matt ><)))))'>
