Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Fly shop doesn't care about trout

trico mike

make mine wild
I checked a fly shops web site today to see how the flows were. The flows seemed good but the water temp was listed as 72.8. Right under the temp the report said " fish are very cooperative". So I called the shop to see if the temp was accurate and the owner who shall remain nameless said the water was in the low 70's. I said it was a little to high to be fishing and he said it was good and the fishing was good. When I tried to explain to said owner that these temps were to high to be fishing he said to each his own and hung up on me. Now this guy has never been known for his people skills but to be promoting fishing in water temps like that is just wrong. I guess it is all about the money and not the resource? I will never again set foot in his shop wich lies right along the banks of the Little Lehigh. On the flip side kudos to shannons for telling people not to fish this week because of to high temps and also to TCO for telling people that penns is way to warm and not to fish it. I guess some people get it and others don't. The one thing that really amazes me is that this guy does talks and clinics all over the place and really doesn't seem to have a clue. 72.8 degrees and the water is good to fish REALLY! TURD!

If he would look at the big picture, he might realize that anything they can do to help their local trout population will in the not too long run help their business. Imagine how their winter will be if there aren't many fish.

You say he shall remain nameless and then drop every possible clue who and what shop it is. I have no reason to doubt you but if you're going that far in your accusation why not just say his friggin' name?

Coolkyle: the LL will always have a lot of fish both wild and from the hatchery, its a significant little limestoner that's about the highest the temps get.

I know of at least one other LV limestoner that had better temps in the high 60s this afternoon. Pretty good for 94 degree heat today. I didn't fish just checked temps at different spots over several miles of stream.

It always seems like your coming to this guys defense. When your wrong your wrong and promoting fishing in 70 degree plus water is wrong. As far as the other valley streams the temps were probably lower especially on one in particular but I didn't want to drive and take the chance. As far as his name those who know will know let others keep guessing. OH here is his latest report "July 16 7pm water temp73.8 not bad for a 90 degree day fishing is fabulous" Not one mention of it being lethal to catch and release trout. Come on up and spend your money and maybe sign up for one of my stupid $200 seminars ( I added that last piece) Ryan if you want to go up tommorow in the heat of the midday and fish let me know. I would like to show him what catching fish in those temps does. We will just target the rainbows though they don't belong there anyway ( oh I forgot according to him they are wild:beingsick:)

Coming to this guy's defense? How on earth do you come to that conclusion? No way am I defending him, just figured if you're going to the trouble of outing him why not just say his name? I know what you mean but some of those rainbows may have indeed spawned, it's limestoner so its farily well buffered from acidity. It's got wild browns and brookies, why not a few wild 'bows?

I don't fish the Little Lehigh, its just not my cup of tea. Besides, I've got my "home water" limestoner that's been 69 or less thru this heatwave!

You should see the Little Lehigh Fly Shop's latest report from the weekend: "After another 90 degree day the water is 77.1 degrees. Tricos are plentiful. Fishing is superb." I wouldn't know, I was up on the West Br. Delaware on Sunday-missed 3 fish but that's an improvement, I actually got some sort of action this time on dries rather than just putting fish down!

Hey Ryan, stay away from the West Branch its way to warm to fish. And that goes for the rest of you guys as well. I will continually take the water temperature and let you all know when it is safe. :D

Stay away? Are you nuts, I'm finally getting those trout to at least take a look at what I'm presenting them. Gettin' closer now I think to finally sticking one of those damned famous trout. After that I figure renting a seasonal campsite each year will be a given.

Why not take it up with the state of PA? If they are really serious about their catch and release regulations, why not get them to impose a water temperature restriction in designated areas like the LL?

Granted, it IS morally questionable that a fly shop would encourage anglers to fish in such conditions. But technically it is perfectly legal.

WB - I'm on my way up on Monday to help you, err, take some water temps:)

Bad job by Rod with those stream reports. I know firsthand how this warm water has negatively affected those of us who work in the industry. We just need to suck it up and get by until the water temps cool enough to fish, and advertising fishing as great when temps are well over 70F is, IMO, a bad job.

you know thinking about it, its a tough call as the guy like most business's is probably struggling to survive. So he has a choice to make by telling people to stay home and not support his business. or anger experienced fisherman and lose their future business.

I understand the plight of a struggling business owner if that is the case but, rather than encourage or recommend that someone fish in the waters that are fueling his business during a period of high water temps, he should simply offer no recommendation at all. His encouragement to fish for trout while they are stressed could in the long run be counter productive to his own business. Before i knew any better i used to fish the BFB all summer during any conditions, but i must say that I never had any luck when water temps were high. During these high temps, skip the fishing and head straight for the beer.

I headed straight for the beer about an hour ago.

You sure that's good advice, TT?

You guys talking about this stream..

I don't know the stream..... BUT, that clip is exactly why i never divulge the streams or places where i fish.

Funny thing about that video is that stretch of water is a heritage stretch with NO WADING allowed and these jerk offs are wading. If your foot is in the water your wading PERIOD. Isn't that trout predator sight the one that you have to pay for to get useless information? Maybe they should learn how to follow the laws that are posted on the signs all thru the park. That info is free.

Gee lets go fish the kiddie pool, any one can catch fish there all day with cheater flies. those guys are idiots.

Last year I saw a guy at the Kiddie Pool with a line of kids. He would slap down a "junk" fly, get a fish on and hand the rod to a kid to play. When the kid brought the fish in he would hook another fish and let the next kid in line play the fish. I guess that is what the Kiddie Pool is for. Of course most guys hanging around weren't catching much.

I could be wrong but that spot is by the hatchery outflow and I think wading is allowed from there down.

There is no wading permitted in the section until you get below the trout hater's store. I think the bridge below the store is the lower limit of the no wading zone.

Those dickheads were wading and are lucky I wasn't there that day. Then again, I don't waste my time there much anymore. Besides, if I wanted to brag about my prowess with a fly rod, I would probably go someplace other than an aquarium. ;)

You guys are unreal. I really feel bad for you...

You really need to make yourselves feel better don't you?

You know there was no bragging there. We were having fun! Isn't that what it's supposed to be about. You guys just don't get it.... Then we have another guy saying that we are lucky that he wasn't there? What's he going to beat us up. This is worse than high school. You guys should sit there at home and be ashamed of yourselves. It's really sad that grown adults have nothing better to do than to put someone down to make themselves feel better. That's the first video that we made. I had no idea back then how crazy people are in the Internet. The sad part is that many of there guys that badmouth me on the Internet are most likely the same ones asking me questions at the shows. And you know what, that's ok, I hold no I'll will towards any of you.

Yes, I know that wading there is illegal, tell them to predate a ticket and I'll pay it... Would that make you happy? Or would you rather just sit there annoynimously behind the keyboard and type away??

Wylie,

I have been nothing but nice in all my encounters will you. Every time you asked me questions, I answered them. I spent quite a bit of time chatting with you at the TU meeting and the fly show...

If you have such thin skin why do you post stuff that gets folks so riled up?

I realize there are lots of people out there that like no kiss and tell at all on the Net but deliberately breaking the law on video and posting it is bound to get you bashed no matter how nice a guy you are at shows or how much help you offer. You kind of asked for it.

PA is my home state and anybody that doesn't respect our fishing laws draws my ire, especially if they seem to have no qualms about it. I wouldn't dream of deliberately breaking a fishing rule law in Jersey or anyplace else, let alone filming it and posting it for all to stew over but hey, that's me. I thought guides were supposed to show some type of stewardship towards the resource or is that something I dreamed up?

As far as paying a ticket, here's the phone number for the PFBC Southeast Region: (717) 626-0228 and their email address: ra-seedureach@state.pa.us

Turn yourself in and if they fine you, show me ticket and I'll buy you a few beers at the Brass Rail the next time you fish the Little Lehigh for being a standup guy.

Seriously!

I actually called for the heck of it and they thought that I was joking about this. The lady who answered the phone there could not believe that people were wasting their time talking about this on the computer...

The fine is $83.50 btw. She said that this was the most entertaining thing that she has heard in a long time... And she said no to paying any fine for doing it. So go ahead and type about it until your fingers hurt...

You guys sound super cool. Maybe we can hang out some time.
