WTB 2 Inexpensive Rods and Reels

Well.. I'm looking for two inexpensive rods and reels for my cousin and her boyfriend. They are interested in learning how to fly fish and are now looking to buy rods. So I figured I'd see if anybody here has anything halfway decent for cheap.

Looking for 8 1/2 to 9 foot 4pc 5wt rods, and obviously reels in the same weight range.

Not to sure how inexpensive your looking, but allen fly fishing has a deal of the week running that includes one of there rods, line, and a few other accessories for $110 in the size your looking for. This doesnt help in regards to the reels but i thought it might be worth mentioning.

Check out Shannon's as well. I think the shop has 3 different starter packages. Some packages include rod/reel/line/net/vest/waders/boots/flies and instruction. And for many $ hundreds less than if you purchased them separately. Sorry for the shameless plug, but I couldn't believe some of their deals.

I actually stopped in there yesterday and almost ALL of their fly fishing stuff is gone. CrAzY!!!

They used to have a pretty decent selection of gear.

Unfortunatly Shannons is pretty far from me. Actually the closest fly shop to me is in Roscoe.. Which kinda sucks when i need leaders or something stupid, I have to drive 50 mins to get them..

FYI get your leaders from Christopher fave flyfishing. Hand tied leaders in all sizes and reasonably priced.

They carry rods,reels, and a few combos as well ranging the entire price spectrum. If you catch the owner there he is usually willing to cut you a discount or include freebies as well.

We found rods today but they still need reels. What kind of outfit do you have?

I don't blame you there at all. I try to avoid the city of middletown whenever possible.


The physical address for Thruway is 78 Oak St. Walden NY. It is right inside town traveling on 52 East. Wallkill river flows right behind the building.
