I took my first ride of the new year yesterday. I drove along the Beaverkill for a while and took some pictures of the ice build-up still in many spots. I'll post a few of them in a little bit. As I was driving through the Horton area, a Bald Eagle flew past me. That's the first one I've ever seen near the Beaverkill! I didn't see 1 person fishing anywhere on this river. I didn't see any insect activety on the Beaverkill.
I then took a drive to the WB. There was no ice on the WB from Hale Eddy down. I started at Shehawken where a handfull of spin guys were fishing with 10ft spinning rods and 12" lures. One guy had a fish on as I pulled up. He kept the fish in the water the entire time (8 minutes or so (Long enough for me to take a rod out, put it together, thread the line through the guides, tie a tippet on, choose a fly, and walk down to the river)) while trying to get his treble hook out of the fish's mouth.
The stonefly's were crawling all over me at shehawken. No fish anywhere. I changed my pattern a few times, but no hookups.
I then left the area and took a ride past the gamelands. Wow, that road is really muddy. There were some points where I didn't think I'd make it out. There were cars parked in both gameland areas. I didn't stop until a bit further upstream. I walked down the hill and spent a good half an hour watching the water, hoping I'd see something, but nothing was happening. I should have fished at Hale Eddy, but Instead, I took a ride down to Buckingham. I watched the water for a half an our or so before leaving. I stopped in Lydia's and had a burger then back to shehawken where I fished a few streamers for a few hours. Still nothing.
I got back in the car and drove over to Bard Parker. There was one guy fishing with spin gear and a few fly fishermen upstream fishing the EB Side. There was an occasional rise on the WB side of the stream but a bit too sporadic for me to throw a line. Basically, nothing was happening here. I did see another Bald Eagle though. As usual, I was too slow with the lense. You always catch them when it's too late.
All in all, it was a great day to take a nice ride, toss a line, and try out the new Charlton reel (What a pleasure!!!). Ok, because I just remembered about the reel. I purchased a new reel last week and was excited about trying the thing out. It's exactly what I was looking for in a fly reel. The drag system in this thing is probably the closest thing to perfect I'll ever experience. This reel should last me a lifetime!
Anyone wanna buy a Sage 3200? I have so many reels but have no use for this one anymore. I'll probably put it on Ebay for 200.00 or so, so any reasonable offers will be considered.
I'll be posting pics later today.
