Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Took a nice ride yesterday...

I took my first ride of the new year yesterday. I drove along the Beaverkill for a while and took some pictures of the ice build-up still in many spots. I'll post a few of them in a little bit. As I was driving through the Horton area, a Bald Eagle flew past me. That's the first one I've ever seen near the Beaverkill! I didn't see 1 person fishing anywhere on this river. I didn't see any insect activety on the Beaverkill.

I then took a drive to the WB. There was no ice on the WB from Hale Eddy down. I started at Shehawken where a handfull of spin guys were fishing with 10ft spinning rods and 12" lures. One guy had a fish on as I pulled up. He kept the fish in the water the entire time (8 minutes or so (Long enough for me to take a rod out, put it together, thread the line through the guides, tie a tippet on, choose a fly, and walk down to the river)) while trying to get his treble hook out of the fish's mouth.

The stonefly's were crawling all over me at shehawken. No fish anywhere. I changed my pattern a few times, but no hookups.

I then left the area and took a ride past the gamelands. Wow, that road is really muddy. There were some points where I didn't think I'd make it out. There were cars parked in both gameland areas. I didn't stop until a bit further upstream. I walked down the hill and spent a good half an hour watching the water, hoping I'd see something, but nothing was happening. I should have fished at Hale Eddy, but Instead, I took a ride down to Buckingham. I watched the water for a half an our or so before leaving. I stopped in Lydia's and had a burger then back to shehawken where I fished a few streamers for a few hours. Still nothing.

I got back in the car and drove over to Bard Parker. There was one guy fishing with spin gear and a few fly fishermen upstream fishing the EB Side. There was an occasional rise on the WB side of the stream but a bit too sporadic for me to throw a line. Basically, nothing was happening here. I did see another Bald Eagle though. As usual, I was too slow with the lense. You always catch them when it's too late.

All in all, it was a great day to take a nice ride, toss a line, and try out the new Charlton reel (What a pleasure!!!). Ok, because I just remembered about the reel. I purchased a new reel last week and was excited about trying the thing out. It's exactly what I was looking for in a fly reel. The drag system in this thing is probably the closest thing to perfect I'll ever experience. This reel should last me a lifetime!

Anyone wanna buy a Sage 3200? I have so many reels but have no use for this one anymore. I'll probably put it on Ebay for 200.00 or so, so any reasonable offers will be considered.

I'll be posting pics later today.

DC,

Shucks......I was hoping you would have fished at Hale Eddy......I was there for awhile and would have called DEC(I have connections)........that is NY and NO FISHING til April 1.....your bud, CDun.

CD,

Great to hear that you made it through the winter! Glad you were not eaten by wolves or chrushed by an avalanche or something. That would have been a shame. Welcome back to the board! I am looking forward to bringing all 100 or more of my fly fishing buddies up to Hale Eddy to fish with you soon! Spring is comming and so are the guys from NJ...

I might be incorrect, but I thought I could fish below the bridge? Either way, it doesn't matter. I didn't fish.

Fished the Housi today from 9-3 and got zilch. Fri and Sat a few big ones 18-22 inches were taken by others but today no one I talked to even had a bump. Nice water level and lots of little black stone flys all over me. I ran a guy up river to meet his partner and drift boat, he offered me a seat for a float however it was his first time on that river and I passed it up because I did not want to be with him when he discovered every hidden rock in the river, thats what nice about guides, they know the river, I choose safety over the temtation. I never did see him drift by so who knows.

DC,

PA begins approximately 1.7 mi BELOW the Hale Eddy bridge...that's where the open water begins..... until April 1 when NY season opens.........

Can't wait to see all you NJ boys this year......be courteous and give us "old timers" PLENTY of elbow room.............your friend, CDun.

\Im sure there where plenty of fish, just none on the surface. Water still needs to warm up a bit.

Your welcome DC.

CDUN, You are a true gentleman. Very kind of you to suggest that those of us living in NJ are youthfull  !

I do look forward to coming up more than ever this year and will be respectful and courteous as always. Let's hope for a good year with lots of water and cooler temps.

Has the world turned upside down? Is this some sort of early April 1 prank? I know, I'm in the Twilight Zone... or dreaming... wake up Johnny... wake up... :)

There were plenty of fish rising to stoneflies where I was, but I was not fishing, just tying. Great day!!
