Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

The end of forums like this one?

As dead as this site is, NEFF is actually worse. Hard to say why. It's not like some other new site sprang up and everyone went there instead. I post regularly on a hunting site that was nearly dead a year ago and is now back and better than ever. Not sure why these things happen.

I'll take a stab at this and blame it on social networking... Sites like these are free-for-all's. Over moderated and under moderated.

Social networking allows for a guy like JoeD for example to have people follow him without having to sign up with anything.

Typically (unless you're me) people on Facebook are more than just online BBS acquaintances. They've known each other for years and have a history with each other, therefore things are less often taken out of context. People are less likely to "offend" someone they've known for years than some boob on a site like this.

Posting photo's on facebook is easy. You're typically already logged on and you can share your pictures with thousands of people in 1 click. Take it a step further, tag the image and even more people will see it.

At one time sites like this were great for enthusiasts. Now, if you're an enthusiast, look it up on facebook and immediately communicate with thousands of other people.

Just a thought on the subject.

Facebook sucks!!!!!!

Facebook sucks!!!!!!

I agree! People are so willing to give up so much information to strangers or people they knew from HS. Why do you think big brother is taking information from it?!?!

I don't have a facebook account.

People don't like to get offended because they're weak and can't handle criticism or can't handle reading something they don't like. I'm sure someone will get offended by my statement about people being offended. Truth is, people are getting softer and are turning into limp wristed nacys.

I for one hope NEFF does not go away! I know it takes a lot of energy on your part to keep it running Dennis, and we appreciate it! Well, those of us who are left.

maybe i'm not using facebook to its full potential, but i don't see how i could have ever possibly learned as much as a starting fly fisher there as i did here. same goes for a hiking board i am on.

that said, i think you're right in that people can get most of what they are (or think they are) looking for on mainstream social networking sites more easily than on enthusiast boards. but you also miss out on a lot more. not that you knowing that helps get them here and active.

I have learned so much from this site. A lot before I ever joined. There used to be a lot people who wanted to share fishing information. I think some of them got fed up with the BS. I for one like the BS mixed. Speaking of BS where is Simms?

There seem to be less funny stories and also a lot less complaing. I like reading about nightmares and funny shit. I wish there was a thread where guides could bitch about shitty clients. I would love to read about rude shitty know it all fisherman.

I learned bunches about fly fishing and tying here...now I am mostly just a smart ass, but I still enjoy all the political discussions and especially the good natured boobery...

I agree with most of what DC said about Facebook. It is so convenient and easy.

The biggest problem with this site is that I can't post pictures from my phone.

I would post live fishing reports if I could do that.

Years ago, I would post threads with my Blackberry in my right hand, while I launched lasers with my left hand. On the Willowemoc, and I'd only fish where I got cell reception...

NEFF is not different than any other forums in that it will ebb and flow over time. The more socially oriented you can make the site the more likely folks will use it on a consistent basis. There are lots of sites folks can access now so you are competing for mindshare. Keep the user experience updated and content fresh and you are more likely to retain users and have them actively participate. In other words update site you boob.

Twitter sucks. Its like 20 people in a room all blurting out different one sentences at a time, all at the same time. Just google search twitter sucks and see what i mean. Im not alone in that thought.
Guys, i dont mind passing on my knowledge so kepp the questions and pm's coming. I will continue to guide you through the the stormy waters of learning to fly fish

Right all 300 million of them just going along...you sir a boob

How many of those 3 millon are active? I know you like twitter because it is for people with short attention spans, who can only read 100 words a day

It's 300 million of them and enough are active to warrant an IPO.

Its 200 million and under the new act they dont have to release finance info. Brought to you by the same administration that bailed out their buddies in the banking industry. You sir are the head twit on twitter

Right all 300 million of them just going along...you sir a boob

Look what happened last election in this country. It's full of useful idiots.

People who use twitter are retards. People who follow people on twitter are even bigger losers and have no lives.

I have better things to do with my time than post useless dribble on facebook. I didn't like you in HS, and just because you found me on the internet, doesn't mean I'm going to like you now.

Don't even get me started on twitter. #twitterisfuckingay.

I had to ask someone what the pound symbol in front of words meant! I still don't know, or care!

I can't wait for the world to end and the Internet to disappear. People will off themselves just because they can't get on twitter and facebook!
It will be great!

Your last post doesn't even qualify as moronic...it's more like sub moronic.

Some interesting reply's here. It's always nice to see the lovers quarrel between Macboob and WBDneedsanewluvr.

Twitter.. I've tried to use it and I tried to like it but I just can't see any use for it for someone like me. I suppose it has its entertainment values. I'm just not ready for it.

Facebook on the other hand.... This is why boards like this are slowing down. If someone gets offended on facebook, they can simply un-friend you and never have to listen to the offensive stuff again. On Facebook, you're your own moderator. You can view something then un-view it. You can post your picture and unpost it. You're your own internet police.

I never thought I'd like something like Facebook but I'm on it non-stop (dcabarle for those of you who care). Be forewarned though... I'm very vocal about my dislike for religion and your god, (insert your gods name here), and I don't hold back like most people.

Facebook is 24/7 coverage of everyone's bullshit. What's more fun than that? I can't get that here! You fly fishermen pansy types are in bed by 9pm.

I don't think specialty forums like this will go away entirely in place of other social media, but I do think that we are going through some rapid transitions as we figure all of this out as a society. For those hating Facebook, there are any number of things you can do to block certain content, but in the end, police yourself! If you wouldn't want your mother or a perspective boss to read a post, then don't post it! You can block content to anyone but your "friends" and nobody forces to you to "friend" anyone. I use Facebook and even have fun with DC and his God hating at times. I'm not a Twitter guy and haven't bothered to try it. I think social media gets us far more exposure, but it lacks the sharing of intimate knowledge on things like fly fishing.

Interestingly, I'm active on 2 hunting forums one of which gets unbelievable traffic. I think many of us are more reluctant to post pictures of dead animals and discuss kill shots on social media like Facebook than on a forum such as these. Either way, I'm here until the bitter end:)

well on face book you get bombarded with ads which I find annoying. Then its all the mindless minutia of life. And you HAVE to see It all. On here when I see a post by MacFry for instance, I know it useless dribble and can just skip it. On this site I notice activity goes up and down depending on where we are in the fishing season.

Yes please friend Dennis on Facebook. He provides a lot of entertainment. Especiallly his complaints about his coworkers and people he meets on the train.

His train comments are some of his best work on Facebook! As for ads, no more there than here and you can block out most of them which I do.

In regards to social media (this is the only one I participate in) my mother always said don't post anything online or write something at work that you wouldn't want re-printed on the front page of the newspaper. Not saying I haven't made my mistakes but good advice none the less.

In regards to getting more traffic to NEFF, I've decide to take it upon myself to go through very old threads and start sending private messages to users so they get an email notification and come back - you're welcome.
