Anyone have any experience using either the st croix avid or imperial series? I am in the market for a new 5wt. Any other suggestions in the 150-300 price range?

I have fished the Avid for years. A 6ft 3wt. and I love it.

TFO, fly rods are fine, and the price is in your range.

Let me give you a suggestion...

The LL Bean Streamlight can be purchased, with rod, reel and line, for about 200 dollars.

It is an excellent set-up. If you buy it, you'll likely love it.

TFO RODS are by far the best low budget rods out there...Not to mention, their warranty program rivals their more expensive counterparts...

Hi all,

Local to me, a st croix avid 9ft 9# just became available, barely used. Are these considered a salt rod? Is a 9wt too heavy for salmon/steelehead in pulaski? I don't believe that this particular rod is made anymore

This would be a starter rod for me to salt/steelhead

thoughts?

the Avid is a great rod for the money, I have one , 9' 5wt. I love the med action, as compared to other brands it is a good combination of touch/power. I'm not sure how that translates to the same rod in a 9wt. I have a Sage, and a Winston and the St. Croix Avid preforms right there with them.
I had a Imperial before the Avid oddly enough, it was a good rod just too fast a action for me.
