NEFF Next Top Chef

Well with all the tenseness lately, I am starting another non-fishing related thread. If you don't like it, send me a PM with you're complaint and I will file it under S - for stuff i dont care about

We all enjoy brktrts posts. and i especially like his posts on the food he eats after\during fishing.

FOCUS: if you could come home to any meal after a long day of fishing, what would it be?

For me? Well, it'd have to be beef stew. i rarely eat anything while fishing, and nothing is better than a hearty beef stew.

Depends on where im fishing.
Nothing like a good burger at the roscoe dinner .After fishing all day up in the catskills.Other than that water ever the missus has cooked which is usually nothing........

After a long day of fishing, nothing better than a nice plate of chicken cutlets.

Although I must admit from time to time I'll hit up some Chipotle before getting home

Black-N-Blue burger (medium rare) with sweet potato fries in the Troutskellar bar at the West Branch Angler. Add half a dozen fine, cold beers of your choice and sit around B.S.ing about the spinner fall and life is just about perfect.

Beer.....and pizza.:hubbahubba:

BCB - stew with beef is like a 10" stockie brown, stew with venison a 20" wild one. :)

Another good thread by BCB!
A GOOD Brooklyn Pizza cures all ills,(that is another argument for another time) In this weather, a good stew and a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough. man, that makes it for me. A sixer of good beer helps, too...

For me it's usually either the McDonald's in Middletown, NY or the McDonald's in Clinton, NJ. The Arby's in Beatyestown is also quite good.

There used to be a pizza place in long valley that we stopped at every time on our way back from fishing the SBR or Musky. Pizza and a family sized cheesy garlic bread. Man I miss that place.

Other than that nothing beats thinly sliced ribeye with fresh pepper, sauteed onions, topped with provologne on a fresh Amorosa Roll. Just add your favorite non-fruit induced beer and then a nap

:hubbahubba:home made slow smoked pulled pork cooked the day before and still hot on a bun with american cheese and cole slaw. They also make excelent car-b-que fare the next day if you know how to handle a car-b-que. Not for the faint of heart. Oh and just about any cold mass produced american beer like a miller lite in can or miller high life in a bottle.

There's a bunch of variables, I'd say. If I'm fishing somewhere far and maybe new, I try and find some good cheap local fare.

A good burger/beer joint can cure most ills after a long day on the water. I'm diggin the Sarah Street Grill, lately. They give you a small pail/bucket of deli pickles and pickled cherry bombs (hot peppers) to chew on while you wait for your food. Like bar nuts, but better.

Otherwise, if it's waiting at home?? As the temps dip, I like stick to your ribs, warm up the soul kinda food. Too many to list which are Hungarian. Heck, I'm also good with a garlic pie and some beer. Lasagna is a good warm up.

I think I tend to eat more near the area I fished, anyway. Too darn hungry once you're free from your waders and sitting in your vehicle. So, any great burger/beer joint, pizzeria, sub/hoagie (or whatever you call 'em in your neck of the woods) shop are at play here. If it's a crack o' dawn kind of deal. Any place with a slammin breakfast or sausage, egg, & cheese is also fine by me.

Ok, now I'm starving.

Don't really eat anything to special after fishing but when I get home from duck hunting I always eat a breakfast of pepperoni and eggs with rye toast.

How about this: fried chicken and corn bread wrapped in foil, eaten streamside. I almost always bring a snack to the river, if the fishing is good a little food keeps me feeling good and focused. Also, while eating something on a rock, I usually observe something, like a rising fish or a hatch or a cool bird, that i would've missed had i not taken a break.

If it's the usual drive-by fishing trip I could care less what I eat as long as there is beer.

If it's a weekend or multi day trip there is only one thing that will suffice, a medium rare steak and a sharp knife!

My favorite post-outdoors meal (not strictly post-fishing, sorry), and one i dont get to enjoy very often, is at the Noonmark Diner in Keene Valley, NY; beef barley soup and trailblazer sandwich (beef and swiss grilled on rye if i remember correctly...been too long).

other than that, it's whatever i can muster up the energy for.

One day I'd just like to come home and find Scarlett Johansson waiting for me, naked. But since we're talking the real world I've got a few other dinner favorites: my all-time favorites are prime rib, lobster, fried chicken, dry-rubbed southern bbq ribs. Although a chedder cheeseburger and sweet potato fries w/ a bunch of Lagers is pretty damned good after fishing.

On the Flatbrook, it's always the Yellow Cottage Special sub. On the Pequest it's usually Hot Dog Johnny's for 2 w/ mustard, pickle, fries, and a shake. When I'm in Lamar, PA on Fishing Creek, I go to the Hublersburg Inn- great food and beers. After a day on the Upper Connecticut River it was the Buck Rub Pizza Pub. After a day on the middle Lehigh the Palmerton Hotel is pretty good. If I need an excuse to go to the Port Clinton Hotel, I say I'm going to Cabela's or fishing the Little Schuylkill. A good venison stew or steak is a favorite after cold winter day out in the field or on the stream. Hell, I just like good food, period and beers, lots and lots of beers.

Damn, now I'm really friggin' hungry.

For me, it would be my favorite meal from when I was a kid...a huge bowl of tortellini chicken soup.

Best post fishing spot? Ebenezer's Pub in Lovell, Maine. If you're ever within 50 miles of this place, and like good beer, take the detour and stop in. Long before you arrive, draw straws for who loses and is the designated driver, this place is in the middle of nowhere.

Ebenezer's Pub

I just made it back from the shore and had my fave: fly-caught striped bass with Jamacan jerk seasoning, home-made mac and cheese, and a Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA

When I have guest, I will normally grill steaks or salmon along with grilled green and red bell peppers and onions. Add baken beans, a salad and a bottle of merlot or two. When I am alone whatever i can throw together quickley since most dinners during the summer are after the evening spinner fall.

After a day jigging on the ice, ain't nothin better than a pile of fresh fried yellow perch.
Denny

I cook all week long, no need for me to turn up the heat on my days off. On my 5 hour ride back home from the SR you find many interesting joints. I just got turned onto Quaker Steak & Lube with locations in Syracuse & Scranton. Pure grub food with excellent Ribs & Wings. You can mix & match over 20 sauces. Ya get to wash this all down with their 100oz. LUBE TUBE, a 4' keq with tap.
Can you say designated driver?

Since there's been a lot of talk about beers lately, I've got to say that after a day of fishing there's nothing better than a nice Magic Hat #9. Sierra Nevada comes in at a close second. Can never go wrong with the timeless classic that is Yuengling either.

What say ye?

My list of home brews, that being the stuff I drink at home AFTER a fishing trip is pretty extensive since Shangy's in Emmaus, PA is a short drive away. If you've never been there, you won't believe the selection which numbers in the THOUSANDS...

...by the case!

I'm headed there in about 30 minutes!! :)

But my tried and true fishing brew, taken from the ever present cooler in my trunk and consumed in abundance IMMEDIATELY before & after fishing is Yuengling. I have always been a big fan of Yuengling Premium which is NEPA's gift to beerdom or Chesterfield Ale which seems to give me a better pre-fishing buzz. After that it's Porter or Barack and Tan with the Lager at the bottom of my preferred Pottsville pleasures.

There is nothing like stumbling along 6:00 am in the morning on a rocky trout stream with good Chesterfield buzz!

I like your thinking! #9 tastes the best up in Burlington though so i prefer a good old lager while around here.

It washes down a late night order of gravy fries from Nectar's quite nicely.
That it does, but it didnt improve my pool shooting. I got an order when i was there in August following your suggestion. Good gravy, fries needed to be crispier.
