Musky Fishing report

Barbless Hooks save lives
Hey guys. i Pormised you id get a report out by tonight. Sorry I couldnt get one up earlier but I was out at the region 5 wrestling tournament at HC. Today was very solid. First time at the musky this winter actually. Fished from 11:30-3:00.

Started at the bridge right at Point mountain TCA and got two right away on a #20 disco midge(red). Both hit at the end of the drift, as if it were suspended in the current. Around 12:30 i switched to a #14 dry Black stone fly with a #18 PT dropper and had 2 bows rise on the dry, which was very exciting, but nothing landed. I switched to a # 10 root beer bugger with a #18 PT dropper at 1:00 and did quite well. 4 bows on this pattern, 1 on the bugger and 3 on the PT. The one on the bugger was 17 inches. I think that the bugger just acts as a good weight for the PT when you swing it. They were hitting th PT like they would an emerger. Big splashed but not top water. Also, I was not catching the fish in the boring slow water today, but in eddies and stronger currents just under rocky runs.

O...and did anyone else see that mink running up and down the bank today. Odd animal it is.

Nice report Skipper. The bugs have been waking up a bit and so have the fish. I talked to a guy who got some fish out of that hole by the bridge on a scud pattern. It's amazing, I always assume that spot gets overfished and fish would prefer to head upstream.
As for this thread, I don't know what's wrong with these people.

I see Petie-Po got up (again) on the wrong side of the bed and started right in on moving my posts around.

Have some more grape nuts there Pete....

3/8/09 report-
Water temp-40 degrees at noon. Forgot to take the temp when I left. Fished from noon through 3pm today. Stayed away from point mt. due to possibility of large crowd. The access was very muddy and I slipped on my butt 3 times.:crap: Started with a size 12 root beer woolly bugger with a #16 prince on the tandem and had 2 strikes not fish landed. Switched the prince with a #14 Black stone dry that my friend tied and had numerous strikes but only landed 3. 2 rainbows 1st 12" the next 13". and 1 brown 15". All fish on the dry. At the end of the day I saw a few fish rising, but none took my dry on top water.

Went over to spruce run on my way home just to check out the water level, but decided to just fool around with the fly rod. I throw out that root beer bugger and hooked into something BIG(for light tackle), and took the bugger on my pathetic 5x tippet. I dont fish spruce run much in the winter. It was over by where the river/canal runs into the lake. Anyone know what it could be? Musky, pickerel, catfish, or just a big rainbow?

3-13&14 report

On Friday I went out with my buddy at PM and we hooked into a few fish. Water temps were at 40 by noon. Caught three fish all on #14 prince nymph. First two caught in the fast water, both around 14 inches. My third bow was 20+ inches in a slow pool caught on the swing. I will have pictures up as soon as I get the photo from my buddy.

Saturday the temps rose and water temps were 42 degrees at 1pm. Saw a lot of fish rising and threw out a #14 black caddis. Landed two fish on the dry which was very exciting. One bow was 12 inches, the other 14. Both times it hit very shortly after I skittered it.

Very nice report skipper what part of the musky were you on?

Fished the Musky yesterday and had a great time. Had the river to my self and the Sulphurs were hatching all over the place. Caught 9 and lost just as many. Started at 10:45 and fished until 7:30 Had a lot of hits and know hook ups. Water was at a great level I fished the TCA Going to the Ramapo on Tuesday and I know they also have a good sulphur hatch..Fished caddis in the evening and only caught 1 The trout were breaking the water evry where and you did not know which one to cast to. They were taking emergers and I did not have any on me Well back to the tying bench today Talk Later....Vance

Vance,

I was working along the river all day yesterday and saw what you saw. They were on a brown caddis emerger and very selective to them. There were lots of sulphurs emerging and spent on the water as well as some random spinners from various mayflies and some light Cahills, but all they fed on were the emerging caddis. Lots of fish up the past week on the Musky, the sulphurs are usually the ticket this time of year, but the caddis sometime have a say about that...

Hi Rusty Spinner,

I was fishing below Penwell Bridge. about 1/4 mile below. The only people I saw was 2 spin fishermen They left after a little while and it seemed like I had the whole river to myself. Thanks for the tip on the Caddis emergers. I tied up some small sulphurs today. I did see 3 large sulpurs yesterday about a size 14 or 12 So I have to tie up some large ones also After lunch yesterday I fished with nymphs and did quite well working my way down stream this is where I lost alot of fish because they were hitting the flies short and not really hitting the fly hard. I went back to the car and had a sandwich. It was after eating that the trout were on the caddis emerger I wanted to go today but my wife needed the car so I have to wait until next week. If I do poorly on the Ramapo I will either go to Big Flat or back to the Musky. I will say one thing and that is the TCA of the Musky is a very pretty area Well Thats it for now...Vance
