4/16 (2:30 to 7ish)
RV, Pohat & Musky
I linked up with a couple friends for some on the water lessons. They both caught a rainbow and one had a wild brookie as well. I had zilch. They had other obligations so I kept fishing. On the musky there were around a dozen anglers and about 7 fish taken in about a 2 hour time period.
Weather went from sunny & 65 degree's to cloudy/rainy & 50 degrees or less in all of 30 minutes!!!
I threw a Olive Woolly Bugger the entire day.
4/17 (6:30am to 9:00am)
Saddle River
Ran into a old fishing fried from 2 years ago. He said he had one rainbow before we linked up, but much more importantly I watched him bring in a wild brookie on a spinner (the method is insignificant in this situation)!!! I caught a few of these two years ago when I use to fish there more often, it's great to know they are still around. The WTS on the Saddle River is a good 5 miles upstream, so it was truly really great to see. I just hope the two week anglers that might stumble across them treat them well! No fish for me another Skunk.
I threw a Olive Wooly Bugger, a scud, and something else that I couldn't I.D.
4/18 (9:00am to 3:00pm)
Black River, SBR (scouting), RV, Pohat, Musky (scouting)
The black had a good amount of anglers on the water reports of a few fish being caught. The water was too crowded, and where it wasn't crowed the water was too fast for me.
I couldn't find the stretch on the SBR that I wanted to, so I continued down 513 to RV on a mission to get my first fish on the fly (you can see the fly in the picture). I caught a Bluegill and said mission accomplished now back to trout fishing. I hit up the Pohat again and found another skunk, a report of a man upstream limiting out...., and a couple of older guys said they C&R a few bows between them. We sat and talked about stocking signs near areas with no parking, and shared some past history then parted ways.
I scouted several miles of the musky on my way back home (Bergen County). I can't wait for the weekend SBR and Musky I'm coming for ya!!!
In sum, I didn't get to land my first trout on the fly but I did get my first fish on the fly, and some more good lessons. Also, I found plenty of completely new to me water that I can't wait to fish. So I consider the past 3 days quiet productive.
