Ken Lockwood Gorge Report

Barbless Hooks save lives
Just got in from the gorge. Got out at 10:30 and fished till 1:30. Water temp was 37 near Hoffmans Xing. Went 4-7 on hookups. 3 bows, one being 17 inches. 1 Brook that did not look too healthy. Started the day with a #16 PT and didnt do too well. Took the shot off and swung it like an emerger and landed one right away. The huge splash scared the crap outa me.

Switched to a #20 red disco midge at around noon and had great success with that. 6 on but landed 3.

Water temps were at 38 when I left. I wish I could of stayed later to throw some dry stones out. Saw a decent hatch starting around 1:15, but tomorrow should be great with the temps rising.

Anyone fishing the Musky today?

Can you describe the "swing it like an emerger" technique? Ive never done this that i know of.

At the end of most of my nymph drifts i will slowly pull them up instead of ripping them out, but i assume you are doing something else.

Thanks for the report, good to know what they are hitting. How were the crowds, i imagine there were quite a few people out. I can only get out on saturday.

I was in the Gorge this morning meeting someone from this site. It was tough going for us on nymphs and I switched to a root beer colored woolly bugger and immediately began getting hits. Broke that fly off and didn't have another like it. Couldn't buy a strike on black or olive, so we left and headed over to the Musky where I landed 2 nice bows in short order before heading home to get some work done.

So much for 50 degrees and sunny, it was snowing when I left the house and never climbed above the upper 30s. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of people out today in the Gorge (and we saw exactly zero anglers on the Musky on public general regs water).

Well i tie the nymph off the back of a bugger and while it drifts slowly swing it upward and the way the nymph trails the bugger either imitates an emerger or just gets their attention. Either way it was working for me today.

Not too sure what you meant with your post trico mike

Rusty Spinner. Where on the musky you fishing? By mountain point? Im looking to head over there tomorrow and I am not too familiar with the musky.

Thanks
Skipper

Today I was well upstream in the general area of Stephens State Park/Hackettstown area. Tomorrow, if I can find more time to fish, I'll be way down on the lower river in the Finesville area. Need to see the owner of the next dam we're taking down and show him our engineering plans and he's in Finesville.

For those interested in spots on the Musky, you can pretty much catch trout at this time of year from the Saxton Falls Dam down through Mansfield and almost always be on public or open water. That's many miles of uninterrupted fishing. In fact, you can fish almost the entire upper river from Lake Hopatcong down through the Pt Mtn TCA without trespassing problems. Butler Park is another stretch of open water as is Shurts Road, Mount Joy/Bellis Roads, and other sections of the river.

Thanks. I think ill head up to Mountain point tomorrow instead of the gorge to mix it up. Ill have a report up by tomorrow night.

Pray for rain - the rivers are getting low and slow. The fish have lots of time to study our flies. Add cold temps to the mix and fishing is tough most days.

Other than yesterday (black and white kitty), I've had decent fishing this week for myself or the person I was fishing with. Good luck tomorrow...

Heading out to KLG right now for the first time. Me and my nymphs will be arriving in an 'Ol Blue Chevyvan, probably just before 7 am. Hope to see someone from the page out there.

Ever tried a black tail+hackle, red body? Seems like it would do well. White and red would be cool too. Wish I still tied, just can't handle the migrating marabou mess.

Come on! Half the fun of tying buggers is being covered head to toe in marabou!

I've tried a few heavily weighted red and black buggers that I bought for smallie fishing. Unfortunately, I lost both of them to rocks in the Big D - but they looked awesome! I'll have to tie some up now that you reminded me about them.

No, I haven't tried that. One article I read in Science News indicated that fish might be able to see some red so it certainly worth a shot. I suppose that some red hackle on black body/tail might be worth a shot also, but see these combinations more deadly for LMB than trout. Anyone have input for trout?

I do know that all white works for LMB, here is a twelve inch white WB I tied and the 40 inch LMB I caught (I placed the LMB on one of those giant foam hands you get at sporting events).

I hear the cops are looking for someone in a blue van out that way, so don't be surprised if you get stopped. Some pig tried to get a kid into his van yesterday just outside of Califon in Fairmount.

Good luck with the fishing.

:S: This sure fits the bill..

Some off topic posts, related to another message board, and it's Administrator, were moved to another topic about the same subject.

I don't like that.

It just gets in the way of AK Skim's new Out Reach Program.

So, no one reached out and rattled your tree Petie-Po, now go back to sleep.

Dang, that aint good. I hope they found the creep. I didn't have a problem. I was in the area all day. Takin my brother in law over there in the morning.

Well, struck out again at the gorge. Saw a few minks, that was cool. Not giving up on the fish yet. Will try again soon.
