Steelhead report!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simms

New member
Well boys,

Just returned home from a great weekend fishing with the guys. Left Massachusetts on Thursday at 11:40pm, in a blizzard. Once past Springfield, all was clear. Pulled into Pulaski at 4:00am. Of course nothing is open, so I pull into the Golden Arches and took a quick chooch. At 5:00am I headed over to Fat Nancys and shot the shit with Ryan and picked up some egg shot, drennin, and tooth picks. 6:00am, my buddies from SU pulled in, so they went to get stocked up on stuff while I got ready. The board said 33degree water temps so I opted to keep the spey in my truck and rigged up the 10' Loomis 7 weight instead, as nymphs and beads were going to be my tactics of choice for the morning at least....

We pulled into camp and was greeted by 18'' of snow still within the pine trees...

(Couldn't wait to put the tires to the test when we left) So we walked down to the river (between Pineville and Sportsmans) and took the first casts of the morning.

15 minutes later the thingamabobber went down and I set. Fought a nice steelhead around for a while but it eventually popped off. Water temp read 35 degrees.
So, with the skunk off my back, I decided to hit the bank and indulge in a ice cold LB! If I do happen to indulge in a beer equivelant to lake water, I tend to go towards the bullet. Unfortunately my buddies picked this rack up the night before without my input.

IMG_0110-1.jpg

So after I had a few celebratory brews to the beginning of a great steelhead season, I hit the water, this time with a purple bugger...Decided to spwing for a while...A few drift boats were creeping by so I gave them their distance and headed way down just above sportsmans...About half hour later, a beautiful hen slammed the bugger and she put up a great fight!!!!!
IMG_0118-1.jpg

Excited yet again, and feeling somewhat greedy as I have been the only one to hook up, I headed back upstream to play guide..My buddy Andrew, has also been fly fishing for as long as I have, so since there were 4 of us, 2 of them being novices, we each took one and began to show them the ropes a bit better... I tied on a olive bugger for Kyle and put him in an area where I knew there would be fish...once the casting was under control and able to place it in the general area, a real nice, somewhat pale colored hen decided to indulge in lunch...She was brought to hand and realeased perfectly.
IMG_0119-1.jpg

While he was fighting the fish I again became greedy and chucked out my bugger and almost immediately hooked up...Water was now at 37degrees...Its can only get better!!
IMG_0116-1.jpg

Tim, the other guy with us, put on a white egg sucking leech...He set himself up after a few minute breif on "water reading" and what not, and was graced with a beautiful fish!!!!!
IMG_0139-1.jpg

Andrew came down, weilding a golden stone and plucked 2 browns out from under a tree just up from the sportmans as well..Unfortunately, both these fish snapped him off once they hit the glide...A little too much rod pressure with the 6lb test..oh well!

At this time, we decided to head to the upper fly zone...Wanted to show the 2 guys some new scenery and what not..We parked at Altmar and hiked up to the lower UFZ...The crowds att he lower end were beareable and we found plenty of open water...I put on a golden stone and had this steel hit as it swung around at the end of my drift...
IMG_0133-1.jpg

Out of the same run, this chunk of a male came to hand, again on my golden stone
IMG_0136-1.jpg

Andrew hooked up and landed a nice fish...THis was on the golden stone...
IMG_0124-1.jpg

Tim then put on a chartruese glo bug with a red dot and after a half hour of persistent fishing, managed this beauty!!!
IMG_0141-1.jpg

Since the golden stone was working exceptionally well, I stuck with it and it payed off...
IMG_0138-1.jpg

Tim locked and landed a beauty but I left my camera on the bank, upstream :(

Due to the fact lunch consisted of 40 wings and alarge pie at Stefanos, a few of us had meetings about a man with a horse, and it was getting late, so we made the treck back to the lot...Successful day...A few more fish came to hand after that last pic, all on glo bugs/stones/buggers... So we made our way to Arbys /Golden arches to take care of those minutes... Made our way back down to Syracuse, as we didn't want to open up camp.....

The next morning, it was very difficult to get up, but we reluctantly rolled out of bed...Got ready, and made our way back to Pulaski...Again, we headed up to the lower UFZ...
We lost a guy to a fishing comp back in 'cuse, but picked up another...He has been fly fishing for a while as well...Orange bugger was the ticket for him!
IMG_0162-1.jpg

We all hooked up with fish, with basically anything you threw at them..Water temp was now 41 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We even had a few doubles!

Before it got too late, we wanted to head back down below Ace...We quickly hiked back to the lot and made our way back to camp where we walked down to the river... I was the only one who brought fish to hand...Perhaps that was because everyone else was soaking up the sun, checking their eye lids for cracks, streamside...
I first put a bugger on and swung that...Brought to hand the darkest steel of the trip!!!!!
AND HOW IS MY ALLEN POSE!!!!!???
IMG_0167-1.jpg

IMG_0170-1.jpg

Hooked into another one but lost it... :(
IMG_0163-1.jpg

Then, for the heck of it, threw on an egg yolk and tangerine and this little guy hit it hard!!! Couldn't believe how fresh this fish was..For certain, the smallest fish of our trip!!!! But a beauty!
IMG_0172-1.jpg

NO BROWNS were brought to hand, and only 2 hooked...Would have thought it would have been better for the browns, but not so much... Weekend was great, lost many flies on the break offs, but also landed a good deal!!! Weather was great and I heard today from my dad people lost count on how many steel they got...Rain should freshen things up this weekend and bring in some freshies....Lets hope!!! Enjoy the pics guys!!!

Just had the shitter pumped out lol Needless to say, the guy had a hard time with it...antifreeze was something we didn't do!!! OOOPS! We were gonna open up camp but we would have had to crank on everything...In a few weeks when temps dont go under 32 again, well open her up for good...

Where is your camp?

Twis,

Yes, for certain! haha HOWEVER< I would postpone that cold until next week..Gonna be a WASH OUT this week..IT WILL bring in more fish, but it will plummet water temps as snow is still on tug hill..Late next week it should be boiling!!!!

I just checked the weather report and am thinking the same thing. Next week/weekend I will be there for sure.

That first fish had some great colors. You can really tell the difference between the upper and lower river fish.

If your going to drink Labatt, man up and drink the regular. At least it wasnt the lime one

HAHA TOUCHE! However, after polishing off (3) yes, (3) thirties that day, (one before lunch time) we were happy we took our caloric intake into consideration. LOL Now, you would approve, as Saturday night I indulged in stone ruinations, Smithwicks, Gritty's, and Fly Dog, beer in which tastes like asphault(some may think..,nevertheless, I love them) and puts hair on your chest.

Yea those are better choices. I stick with regular Labatt or Yuengling most of the time up there.

If we head up at the same time we can swing some flies.

awsome report I'm heading up to ny to hope for some early dry fly action next week ,but if its slow ill def be heading a little more north to pulaski

Dry fly action now? Very optimistic!!! LOL

North to Pulaski is a DEF for me...after this weeks rain, and the river gets back down to "normal", steelhead will be INSANE!!!!!!

I caught a nice LBS hatch yesterday but not a single rise. Water temps are still a little cold. Once it warms the fish should get more active.

Yeah....yeah....yeah...so you caught some fish. BIG DEAL. Haha....ok..I'm just a tad jealous.

Come on October! Can't get here soon enough. Stay here in NC and go back to the course...or try and get to Drum, Lewis (Washington state!), or see if I can get home to Cuse'...hmmmmm.....

Save me some feeeesh!
