Cast Drys over them Enough They Will Rise
I was wondering if there is any way to pressure the state of NJ into bringing the Gorge back to FLY FISHING ONLY and still have it be a trophy trout area. It seems to me that spin fisherman are still finding a way to use bait. In fact I nicely explained it to a guy last year that Salmon eggs power bait and garden hackle were not allowed there and he just ignored me.

It's just a shame that the FLY FISHERMAN in NJ is overlooked by the State and the Gorge for so many years was Just that FLY FISHING ONLY.

Lets see whos interested and maybe petition the State to do this.

It doesn't matter. I recall years go fishing the KLG when it was fly fishing only and a couple pricks were driving down the access road stopping at each pool picking up dozens of fish on spinning gear and throwing them in the back of the pickup. There's really no way to stop all poaching.

you have to understand the people who are going to do it dont care what you say them. they know their wrong. instead of buying fishing gear, they should go to the butcher and buy fish. ive seen guys at the flatbrook who bring their sons and make them stand on the shore and watch daddy as he uses his son as an excuse to get 12 instead of 6.

Keep the number of the North Regional F&W office in your cell phone and report violators...908-735-8240

Yup, I've seen that too many time up there myself (and others places too). That and the guy that gets his limit dumps them in the cooler in his trunk and heads back for another limit. I think he actually got caught finally but there's always another one.

A few years back, I was fishing in the Gorge and came across a couple guys using cheese balls...I approached them and said "This section of river is artificials only No Bait is allowed and the local conservation officer will fine you and take your gear"...The guy turned to me and said "I am using artificial cheese":D True Story..

I'm a flyfisher but there is absolutely no reason to just blame the spinfishers for breaking the laws there. There are the same percentage of law-abiding spinfishers as there are law-abiding flyfishers. No need to change those regs, it will not reduce the law-breakers. You will always have a small percentage of law-breakers, all you can do is report them and the wardens prosecute them.

In the fly/spin debate I was just at the Salmon R in Altmar. Met a guy who was picking up trash in the Lower Fly Zone when fishing was slow. He filled a large trash bag in no time and commented that he was saddened that there was no less trash in the Fly Zone than in the open water.

On the BFB last year I came across two morons in Werners pool. One guy had a fly rod, the other w/ spinning gear. The guy guy w/ the spin gear tried to hide it behind his back and then duck behind his buddy. They backed out of the stream and left. I've also had "fly fishers" tell me they sometimes put a mealworm on the fly.

I've never reported these people, but it seems that I'm seeing more and more of them and it gets frustrating. I've seen the COs out at both streams and I know they are trying. I think we all need to start using our cell phones more.

Just because the guy next to you is crushing them on spinners. Lose the fly rod and catch some fish.:give-the-finger:

I think some of us probably saw the same guys, but further downstream in the Blewitt Tract. We mentioned to the guys about flyfishing only and they both answered with some sort of excuse that the guy with the spinning rod "wasn't going to fish this section but he wanted to watch his buddy with the flyrod." We were all like "Oh OK, we'll be sure and let Roger know that the guy we saw go upstream with the spinning rod wasn't actually going to fish with it." Of course when they turned around and left they were muttering under their breathe about us being assholes.:)

hahah yea nothing beats watching a big ole hunk of powerbait floating pass you and then you look up stream seeing the guy putting another "salmon egg pattern" on.

I would like to see the regulations changed back to how they were. It won't stop the poachers though these guys do what ever they want. I would like to see less crowds in that stretch of river though. It seems that ever since the reg changes and the publicity the river gets from the state and local busnises the place is always way to crowded. I actually don't even fish there anymore even though it is my favorite stretch of water. I remember years ago I would be able to start at the top and fish down to the trestle without even getting out of the water, and in the evenings I would have my pick of pools to fish the hatch on. Personally I think the place is ruined but that is just my opinion.

Just as easy to put a worm on a hook with a fly rod as it is with a spin rod. Changing regs to FF only will not change that fact. Like others said, poachers are where you find them so keep the Northern Region CO # (908- 735-5450) in your cell phones and use it.

We had to give up FF only in that stretch in order to get it into the TCA program at the time. Just remember that they bait fish in the Pequest TCA, the Point Mountain TCA, KLG TCA, etc. and all you can do if you catch them is to report them. Beats doing nothing and complaining on an internet forum. Weed out the bad apples, don't expect our beleaguered CO ranks to catch them all.

Fortunately, New Jersey has a shitload of decent trout water considering it's in a metro area consisting of 20 million people. The other 20? miles of the SBR upstream is not too shabby, especially after the post-stocking feeding frenzy subsides.

I've said this ad nauseum, but I'm glad the KLG is grossly over fished. It gives me lots more open river upstream without the crowds and with larger fish. Yes I said larger fish.

For all those that want the Flat Brook Fly Zone left alone. Stay Tuned
Trout Unlimited lobbying to make it a YR TCA. My thoughts were the Gorge was better a fly zone the Flat would be better a Fly Zone. The only thing I would alter is the first nine days no bait.No kill Oct 1st to Opening Day.

I'd like to see the regs changed so that to fish the gorge you are required to park at the Claremont section and walk from there. The only exception would be the folks that want to fish from the handicapped accessible scaffolding.

How about making both of them C&R?

When the Gorge was FF Only, everyone complained about the first 10 days of the season and how the "spin" guys would keep all the fish...And dont forget the wads of mono we would be finding for the rest of the season...But I also remember there being less fish...I saw lots of Fly Fisherman with stringers in those days..They would fish year round and keep fish...I think the Year Round Conservation Regs are better....Are there more crowds, absolutely, but I dont think it is all spin fishermen...There seems to be alot more FF fishing the Gorge these days than in years past, so I think the crowds would still be in the Gorge even if it was FF Only.....
Just for the record, At the time, I voted against the change to YRTC at my County Federation Mtg...

C&R is currently not in the NJ regs. You have to change the state regs before you can change any specific TCA regs. And we are working on that as well as is being discussed on the Big Flatbrook club thread.

Gadfly - I have a new business proposal for the state to work as a private concession at the Gorge. Parachute rentals at the two handicapped piers for extreme base jumpers. Want in? :)

The one good thing that came out of the over crowding of the gorge is that I started fishing Pa and realized what real trout fishing is supposed to be like.

I control the black market worm trade in the Gorge..Maybe we can work together:pimp3:

You guys are both too late. I was there last week and came upon an event at the middle lot "fishing pier" sponsored by none other than Red Bull energy drink. The only thing that surprised me was that there was so few people there for a Saturday. Here's my home video....

I have never fished KLG, but I do see NJ fishing for what it is, it is VERY over pressured, and the more TCA's that exist the better. Nobody is the bad guy, it just is what it is. We live in a small state with a high population, and not a ton of "great" trout fishing, so we need to preserve what we have. I applaud any guy who lives in NJ who enjoys getting out and spending a morning or whatever on a nice stream, in an attempt to get away and relax, Lord knows most of us can use it. I am just a fan of putting the fish back in the water so the next guy can have the same enjoyment. In a state as densely populated as ours as compared to the fishing opportunities that exist TCA'S are one a few responsible solutions to preserve our sport for everyone.

I will be spending the rest of the night drowning myself with whiskey in an attempt to rid myself of that visual...

Make fun of it and drink all you want.... but in case you were wondering it does have 10 shell loops for my shotgun shells so i don't have to wear a vest...... and it does meet the 200 sq/in blaze orange requirement, just in the ass alone.....
