Bear "encounter" in Vernon Twp.

jlajoie

Can I commute to Missoula from here?
A man was accosted by a 400 lb. female black bear in his driveway in Vernon Twp. Friday. Apparently, the bear wanted his sandwich.
Saw the story on channel 4 News at 5.
Black bear attacks Vernon man, steals sandwich

by The Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk Wednesday July 01, 2009, 1:57 PM

VERNON -- A black bear knocked over a man in his driveway last week and stole the sandwich he was packing for a business trip, according to a report in the New Jersey Herald.
The report said while packing his car at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Henry Rouwendal was knocked down by a black bear, who then grabbed his sandwich from the trunk of the car. Rouwendal suffered from some cuts and bruises, the report said.
The remains of the sandwich and its wrapper were found on the side of the house, the report said.

Saw the story on channel 4 News at 5. Haven't found a link to the whole story yet, but one will be up soon.

It happened last Friday and was kept under wraps until today when a PA paper let loose the story. Now the local cops are issuing a press release and it's all over the internet and news media outlets. He was attacked for his sandwich which he had in the trunk (trunk was open) as he packed for a trip. Not looking good for Corzine heading into a tough election in the fall. Now he'll have to defend his blocking of the bear hunt by the one or two brave reporters who will bother to ask him about it come open questioning time.

At least we know AK won't be spotted anywhere near Sussex until this bear is brought to justice:)

The jackasses from the bear group, will shortly put out a press realease blaming the man for leaving his trunk open, and being on his driveway so late at night.

According to the man, the bear "didn't like the tomatoes, the lettuce, or the onions.":beingsick:

Bear encounters are sure to be on the increase even though most won't get reported. I've seen more bears in my yard this year than ever before. Saw one yesterday walking across the field in front of Sussex County Community College, so it looks like they are becoming more educated about how ignorant humans are and how easy it is to steel their sandwitchs.

Oh man. When that bear finishes his degree from the community college, we are all in trouble!

Let's not forget that some more highly populated areas in NJ are "no tolerance" zones, while those of us in more rural areas must accept encounters with bears. Hmmm...... either we are not as valuable as the people in urban areas, or there are more votes in the urban areas, or both?

Yet they can kill the defenseless little rats, just like the ones who cook on the Muppet movies? I say to kill those precious rodents is murder!

It was all his fault. He should have had the sandwich in a $200 bear-proof lunchbox.

I think the guy was rippin drunk, got all banged up when he fell and need to explain why he was bleeding to his wife who he just woke up at 11pm on a work night.

I have been warning all of you...

This is just the start.

Once one bear figures out how to steal a sandwich.. they communicate it to the rest of the herd and the stampede is on.

First we have to do river cleanups for slob bait fisherman that leave trash and now we have to pick up after the wildlife that leave trash. I guess only fly fisherman are nature friendly.

True story. We saw a herd of bears on the way to the Smokies. Once in the Smokies we witnessed a few herds of bears looking for HUMANS to eat!

Slightly off topic:
Not Vernon, and the garbage men avoided being eaten...

You got that right EC. The animal rights folks only want to make the rules, not clean up the messes their decisions cause.

There are so many bears in NJ right now, it ridiculous!
last weekend I was riding my bike in West Milford and Jefferson TWP.
I spotted three bears. The first was at the West Milford park and ride; I was no more than 15 feet away from it. He stopped, took a look at me and just walked off into the woods.

The other 2 were in a soccer field in Jefferson. One big guy around 500 LBS! knocked over a garbage can and was eating the contents. Another smaller bear was about 50 feet away from him waiting for the left overs.

Blondie there doesn't know what she is doing.

You can't hang a bear like that, she needs to get that line up and OVER that tree limb.

I think she is need of a BlondeStar button.

First of all you shouldn't be riding a bike.

Bikes are for hippies, and people who paddle kayaks.

Besides.. if you ride your bike past a car wash chances are the NIS will pick you up.

As always, just being helpful

Just curious, are they talking about a bear hunt this year, it was a big topic in years past, pro and con, but I have not heard anything lately.

Our biggest obstacle to a bear hunt this year is our governor. A perfect example why Democrats shoudn't be allowed to vote.
