Alaska......

CTobias -

I enjoy the updates to this post - thanks for that. Completely jealous, but keep em coming.

I noticed you have a dip packed in one of the pictures. Just curious as to what a can of dip costs in Alaska....

Too much!!! I was paying $3.50 a can for Skoal straight in NC. I now pay almost $7 a can. I have been getting the half logs from Costco. Saves me a couple bucks. Beer and dip seem to be comparable to NY price wise. The nice part is there is no sales tax in Anchorage.

Over 90k sockeye ran up the Kenai yesterday. That's a lot of fish!!

Fish Counts - Sport Fish - ADF&G, Alaska Department of Fish and Game

That is a lot of fish for sure, especially when you consider how many are caught by the commercial fleet before they even hit the river. One September I was fishing rainbows on the Naknek River and surrounding area near King Salmon, and while talking with the camp owner, he said they had a few days where 250-300,000 sockeyes passed the counting station each day. This happened when storms kept the commercial fleet at the docks for a while during the peak of the run, allowing a huge escapement upstream.

I'm also enjoying your reports and will be looking forward to seeing what happens in the next few months, it's getting to be prime time soon!

Damn. $2.50 for Skoal in Pa - $1.50 if I go bargain basement and dip Grizzly.

Then again, I am sitting in 100 degree heat with my fly rods collecting dust. I'd trade fishing for cheaply packing my face with dirt.

I want to go fishing this evening, but I need to tie flies for this weekend. I guess I could always just tie some tomorrow.

A few from tonight for this weekend.

With Anchorage in my rear view mirror I was headed down the Seward Highway and off to meet up with a buddy to fish the Kenai.

Unfortunately, this isn't my boat, but I wish it was!

We fished the lower Kenai and launched at Centennial park located in the city of Soldotna. Luckily the majority of the reds were up near the Russian River, so the crowds and boat traffic was minimal. That, and kings went to catch and release and the season officially closed Saturday night on the Kenai. A whole four days early!

The fishing was steady through out the day and I couldn't even tell you how many dollies we caught. We got into some bows, but it seemed the dollies were being rather greedy on Saturday.

A few of the better bows from Saturday.

My buddy hit a silver swinging a flesh fly, but I didn't get a picture. I didn't hit any fish swinging, but hopefully more silvers roll in and my luck on the swing changes.

After a solid 12 hours on the water it was time to head back to the big city after a decent meal.

Headed back on the Seward Highway at 11pm

The wife and I hit a creek near the house for a little while. Needless to say, she caught all the big dollies. Didn't catch any rainbows, but we did spot one hanging at the tail out of a pool that didn't want a thing. Even put a flesh fly in front of it. No dice. Pretty soon her waders aren't going to fit over her stomach. Going to have to have Simms make some maternity waders.

Saw lots of kings spawning. Hopefully some silvers role in soon. Those will be fun on her 3wt.

Nice pics etc as usual man...u gonna be back east this fall? Trying to figure out some sort of SR bash situations

Hit the local creek with the wife after work today. All of the salmon are pretty much gone. Only a few ratty kings still lingering around. Hopefully some silvers start rolling in soon.

Ended up catching a bunch of dollies in the normal spots after we hiked up to see if anything was in the upper stretches. Needless to say, there was nothing in the upper stretches except bear and moose tracks.

Headed down to the peninsula this morning with the wife to hit Quartz Creek for some dollies.

As soon as we got on the water we were into some fish. Always a good start.

There were tons of eggs in the water, especially with sockeye all over the place spawning.

We didn't get any huge dollies, but we got a bunch over 18" and a couple that broke the 20" mark. The few rainbows we hit were small for Kenai Peninsula standards, but they were still head shakes.

We even managed a double in the same run.

For someone who "Only goes fishing because you make me", she sure looks like she's enjoying herself. Don't let her fool you, she loves fishing. She was yelling at the fish every time one got off. There was a lot of yelling today, especially when the fish was a better fish.

After a long day on the water we stopped at the BBQ place to fuel up before heading home. It's a rough life, but someone has to do it.

Well...Hillery did so well on Friday she wanted to hit Quartz Creek again yesterday. We got a later start and got on the water around 12:30. Things started out slow, but picked up and we didn't end up leaving until around 9:30.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

18" Bow

Last but not least is this slob that Hillery landed on a 3wt and 4lb leader!!!!!

Well no dice on the steelhead on the Kasilof. No one got a thing.

Camping out on Skilak lake and then dragging the toon a mile to the Kenai for a two day float. Which means I will be camping along the bank some where. Kenai closes May 1st and opens back up in June after the rainbows spawn. Should be interesting to say the least. Hopefully I can find some fish willing to play.

Photobucket wanted me to pay them money to upgrade to unlimited bandwidth. So I had to create a new account. It said the bandwidth would reset in seven days. let me log in to see how many more days before it resets.

Should reset on the 22nd or 23rd.

That's ridiculous. I use flickr now. I'm not sure if they have the same bandwidth rules but if they do, you can always just use both and split the pictures up.

There are so many photo sharing sites out there.

Have you ever had one of those days, where no matter what you throw at them, you can't seem to buy a bite?
Well, this wasn't one of those days. In fact, it was one of the best days I have had fishing for bows. Between the two of us, we brought to hand, five bows that were 20"+. These weren't skinny fish either, they were footballs. These fish are eating well for sure. All fish were measured with a tape for complete scientific accuracy. I will shut up now, here is the porn.

So...today I picked my buddy up at the Airport in Anchorage. He was coming back from across the bay after guiding for the month. We go through the normal routine ,"How was the fishing, and how was the money?" He tells me, I made dick, the fishing was great, and the boss was a f'in douche rocket and ripped me off bad!
The boss...Jack Johnson... A.K.A. Douche Rocket

First he tells me, he thought he would be making decent tips, plus, he would be gaining great experience, BOY was he wrong!!
So, then he tells me the owner (Jack Johnson A.K.A. Douche Rocket) took 25% of the tips from all the guides and then some. Not only did he steal tips, wine, and banana bread, but after he was done with them for the season, he short changed them and handed them a 1099 form to say they were on their own. After making them think they were working under his jack wagon guide lodge, "LEGEND LODGE", they soon realized they were working for themselves.
Let's be honest, in reality it should be called, "Fuck You, Pay JACK!".
He works his "guides" (aka Kunta Kinte's ) harder than a DREAM ACT Mexican at an Orange Grove in Florida. Yeah, it's that bad.
Needless to say, if I were going to throw down good money to a guide in Alaska, I damn sure wouldn't be giving it to Jack Johnson. I feel bad for his unknowing apprentice guides, who work for little to no pay thinking they are working for a legit guide service. Needless to say, if a guide works for this wanker for more than one season, they are messed up in the head and need more psych work than Casey Anthony.
Oh! Before I forget, you can get a KILLER deal! If you donate $100 or more to Trout Unlimited you can get a guided trip for 50% off!! If not, then you are stuck paying $4299 or more, depending on what Jack Johnson wants to charge you.

Tobias - try kingfishers in Cooper landing. Great food especially after a long day of fishing.

Quartz creek will spoil you for life. As will the whole Kenai peninsula.
