Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Will I die?

New to the forum. I've been lurking for some time, but I thought I'd join in the fray. I moved to the Princeton area in September. I've walked the D&R Canal a couple of times and noticed what appear to be either Crappie or Bluegill. I have a hankerin for some mean fish tacos, but I don't want to poison my wife and I. Can you eat fish out of here? Thanks in advance!

How about you just go to the local grocery store and buy a pound of fish.... and make your shitty taco's with that....think that could work?

Well, yeah, that would work...But you don't really tell a hunter to just go buy 50 lbs of venison from the butcher do ya? Nah, I think I'll just stick with catching over buying. Good idea though!

The canal is the local drinking water supply, so how bad can it be? Unless a given waterbody has known warnings, eating fish you catch now and then is typically fine.

I've made bluegill into fish n chips before, and it was a disaster.

They are bony a scaly.

Good luck, but I'd advise against it.

Yeah, but your not talking about buying 50 lbs of fish, and my butcher doesn't sell venison. nice try.... why don't you just take the wife out for dinner and have a little fish taco when you get back home..for dessert.....

WOW! you just went THERE with it! :hysterica

mstone,

:hi:

Or, you could go to your local trout stream, or one of many here in the state of NJ, and catch your legal limit of trout and eat that. Way better than bluegill.

Yeah, and I wasn't talking about going to the store and buying a lb of fish...nice try...

What are you worried about spreading Spinal Meningits?

Water quality test that were performed on the DR canal have found ; the water that flows in the canal contains MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) along with 29 different Volatile organic compounds. I would not concern myself with that. I personally would not mind my dinner swimming in, and absorbing these chemicals. What is the worst that can happen? Your eyeballs glow in the dark, your spawn may develop a sixth digit, so what. For tasty fish tacos there should be absolutely no constraints.

PS: welcome to the site

I know it must be a cool idea to eat what you catch, but you might catch what you eat. Canal bluegills are tiny, you'd have to catch and clean about 30-40 fish to get anything to eat. Thats to much work for that little amount of food. Your better off finding a organic farm pond where you know the farmer isnt poisoning the water. You might be able to still catch some trout in the canal or Stony brook 1st thing in the am. I dont even think their worth the trouble.

Welcome to the Princeton Area. Since this is a fly fishing site, I am hoping others don't mind that I am passing on this information (really no secret to locals in any event). On Lake Carnegie there is a walkway bridge where the Millstone River goes under the D&R Canal into Lake Carnegie. Big crappie, some perch and an occassional bass can be found there. Crappie is supposedley the best panfish to eat. I see people take home bucketfuls from there. (I am pretty much steak and potatoes so am C&R only). Go just before dusk. Crappie start feeding then. Most use very small caribou jigs in bright colors, like chartruese or yellow (the water is usually stained). Be warned, it gets crowded on the bridge. Good luck.

You think guys get upset about spot burning trout, I know devout crappie anglers who won't show family members where they get them.

I wouldn't be to concerned with a meal here and there from the D&R canal. Go right ahead.

A better culinary choice might be to go to Sandy Hook and catch a fluke. Plenty to be caught in the surf all summer long. That's what I would like in my fish taco!
