Which line for a Sage VPS 9ft 4wt

Hey All,

I recently acquired a Sage VPS 9ft 4wt rod. I am curious as to which line would be the best pair for this rod. I generally throw nymphs, wets, and streamers. I usually only use dries when the hatch is on. I have tried searching the forums for some input on a good pairing for this rod, but with its age its tough to decipher which modern fly line would be the best bet.

Thanks,
Dan

Fly lines have become all about marketing these days. Any brand of fly line by Rio, Sci Angler, Wulff, Orvis, and others will do just fine on that rod. They really don't make any bad lines these days. But they've learned that to get up to $80 for a trout rod fly line, they need to make the lines look newer and better with all sorts of fancy talk. If you're concerned about longevity, buy a double taper which you can turn around as the line wears. If not, a standard weight forward will do you just fine.

Definitely a lot of good lines out there, but I do think certain lines are better for specific situations. Wulff lines are dry fly lines because they are so light and have that soft touch. However, rio lines are a little heavier and you can throw the line around better while mending while nymphing. Nymphing with a wulff line is a pain in the ass because it has such a long running line portion. IF you are purely nymphing, its pretty tough to beat that Rio indication tip line as it really mends well.

Classic Atlantic salmon flies, silk line. Damn dude, you're really stepping your game up these days.

The VPS was medium-fast from what I remember, more like the SLT than the Z. I like the Rio Gold and Sci Anglers Mastery trout on that rod. Push comes to shove, I'd go with the Gold.
