With all the talk about the price of fly rods and reels it can be overlooked that fly lines have now approached the $80 mark.
For those of you looking for a solid but relatively inexpensive floater I'd recommend the Sage Ultimate Freshwater Performance Taper, which can be be had for discontinued prices at $30 a pop.
This is a line made by Rio for Sage for its fast and med-fast lines of rods. So far I've used this line for dries on the upper delaware, steelhead on Elk Creek, nymphing on medium freestoners in central NY, and bass buggin in my float tube. Between my brother and myself we've used these lines on Winston BIIX's, Scott G2's, Scott S4's and Sage Z-Axis'. Just seems to be a solid all around performer that works well with many rod manufactures in varied situations.
All things being equal I may prefer a Wulff Triangle Taper on my Winston BIIX, or a Sci Ang XPS on by Scott G2, but for $30 a pop these lines are worth picking up. Just solid workhorses.
