Thomas and Thomas NS5 5wt Fast action rod Review.

Many years ago, I visited a small catskill fly shop in Roscoe, NY. I was going to fish the Beaverkill that day and wanted to pick up a dozen flies. I was making some pretty good money at the time so $250.00 later in flies was just a drop in the bucket. I wasn't looking to purchase anything else but as I turned around to walk out I noticed the most beautiful fly rod on a rod rack. I picked up a Thomas and Thomas Vector 8 1/2' 5wt rod and asked to the shop owner if I could cast it. Without hesitation, he rigged the rod up and across the way we went.

A few short casts followed by a few longer casts, followed by a few mid range casts, and I was hooked! I already had a rod or 3 but after casting this rod I just had to have it. The finish on the rod was the best I'd ever seen and the colors were just beautiful. Of course a smart fly fisherman doesn't typically base a graphite rod purchase on the color/finish. We (the smart fly fishermen) base our purchase on how the rod performs (I hope). That being said, the rod performed quite well and I couldn't be more pleased with the aesthetics.

I spent a good hour in the fly shop that day and walked out close to $1000.00 less but the rod became my primary rod and I was always happy with it. I think the store owner did throw in a free fly line too!

I'm not one to purchase many rods because I'm generally happy with what I have so when I purchase a new rod, it's gotta be a gem. This is why I can't say enough nice things about the new T&T NS5 which I'm now a proud owner. Just like the Vector series, this rod is perfect in every way. Of course over time, a few things have changed. This rod has a bit more backbone than its predecessor and feels a bit lighter in my hands which will certainly make casting a bit more pleasant while fishing places like the Delaware River for 8+ hours at a time. The rod is a 4 piece rod which means it will be a bit easier to carry around and a bit easier to store when travelling.

A few weeks ago, I spent the day on the upper Delaware fly fishing with my new rod. As mentioned in a previous post, It was fairly windy. I actually prepared for this wind by loading up the new T&T 5wt NS5 with a 6 wt Wulff Triangle Taper fly line. The rod handled the line GREAT! The rod cast through the wind as if it didn't exist.

The finish on the rod is everything you'de expect from a T&T rod and the workmanship is absolutely flawless. This is a rod worth every penny of a high end rod. I feel that the new T&T owener combined with the current T&T staff is doing everything they can to retain old customers as well as obtain new ones. T&T has a real winner with this new line, especially if you're fishing larger rivers and need that extra casting performance that you need.

Unlike my beloved Winston, this rod doesn't have the tip flex the Winston has. Sage is another story. The sage doesn't have much flex in it at all and leaves me feeling like it was a waste of money but it's still a good streamer rod. The T&T blows the Sage away in every aspect. I'd love to try this rod with streamers but I've been having too much fun throwing dries with it.

This coming weekend, I'll be taking pictures for the FUDR event (anyone attending? If you fish the Delaware river, you should support this fundraiser). On saturday, I'll load the rod up with a 5 wt line and I'm sure I"ll have a blast with it.
If anyone would like to give this rod a try or compare this rod to other rods (Winston/Sage/Loomis), I'd be more than happy to meet up with you. If you're an RRTU guy and are close to where they have their meets, I can bring the T&T rod and other rods with me so you can try them youself. If you'll be on the D this coming Saturday, I'll have them with me. Just let me know where you want to meet up. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

...and no, I'm not being paid by T&T to say these nice things. I think T&T is in for the long haul and would like to support a somewhat local rod company. T&T has been around for years making a quality product, I'd like to ensure they're around for the long haul by supporting them.

Dennis,

Have you tried the Horizon II by Thomas and Thomas? I am considering selling some gear so that I can buy either a Horizon II or the No Sanctuary. The level of craftsmanship on the Thomas and Thomas rods are amazing. I have a 12 foot 6wt and a 13 foot 7wt Thomas and Thomas and love them.

Although their craftsmanship is obvious when you look at their rods their customer service is truly priceless and often over looked until something goes wrong. If something should ever go wrong with one of your rods or if you have a question Trevor will truly go out of his way to take care of you.

How was the accuracy of the rod, and what's been the average distance you've been fishing it? Also, which Sage did you compare it to? On average, I've been hearing that alot of Sage guys prefer the Z to the One in the lighter trout weights.

I've not tried the HII but you're right about Trevor. Have you tried the NS5? I believe Streams of Dreams is the only local shop to sell both rods. I can only offer a try of the NS5.

Like anything (A 3000 camera body for example) the tool is only as good as the person using it. With that, the T&T rod performed terrific! Between 50 and 70 ft, the fly landed exactly where I wanted it to land each time. Keep in mind that the last time I was out, I did overload the rod with the 6wt line. I will have 5wt line results this coming week.

My Z is a 9 1/2 5wt. I had both rods with me at the time of the comparison. The NS5 is an all around a nicer rod for me and I'm confident that once you have the 2 rods to compare, you'll agree. I've always been a fan of Sage rods, the latest was the XP. I'm sorry to say that after the XP, Sage hasn't produced anything I'd be interested in owning. If I had the XP and the NS5, I'd go with the NS5 as I think it has a nicer feel to it.

Of course I don't expect anyone to run out and purchase something so expensive based on my observation, this is why I'm offering the chance to cast a bunch of 5wt rods. I own Winston, Sage, T&T, and Loomis. If you have something else you'de like to compare this rod to and want to meet up, feel free to bring it with you. This is the only way to see if a rod is for you.

Great review!

Seriously, nice job!

I'd like to cast this rod against my B3x 9'ft 5wt.

Which Winston do you own?
I have the MXII 9' 5wt.

I'm not in the market for a new trout rod, but I appreciate a good review. My rod collection is limited, but everything serves a purpose, in a mildly untraditional way. I have a 9 1/2 4wt Z that serves as my 5wt, since it has the nut of most 5 wts. I would imagine the 5wt version of that rod, that you have, to be a little tip heavy. I have a 8 1/2 BIIx that hasn't seen much action since the 4wt Z arrived, but I've found a new appreciation for it since I've lined it with the Wulff line and put a nice and light Evolutio LT on it. I'm going to fish it more. My 6-7wt. duties are handled by a 7wt BIIx that I underline with a 6wt GPX (half a line weight heavy). The action of this rod is not like the lighter BIIx's, and I think it was the best kept secret of the BIIx line. Throws a 200 grain streamer express like a champ.

I had a very similar experience.

I was using a RIO selective trout line on my Winston 4wt (wt) and I liked the rod but when I used a wulff it was like a totally different rod. I now love that rod! It's my go-to 8 footer.

I mostly fish Winston rods and the wulff TT is my choice for the 3-6wts I fish.

It's one of the best lines out there.

I find that the BIIx doesn't get much love anymore from many people, because its not fast action by todays standards of fast. However, if you adjust your expections, think of it, and use it, as a medium or medium fast, its a sweet casting rod. The butt section of that rod is also plenty stiff, its the upper section thats soft. Plus its still one of the lightest rods out there.

I fished with Dennis on the inaugaral trip for his T&T rod. While I'd say that the claim of casting through the wind as if it didn't exist may be a bit overstaed, it is a beautiful rod and cast exceptionally well given the 20-30mph winds we had throughout the day. I'll be interested to hear how it performs with a 5wt line under normal conditions

So he lied?

Great who can we trust anymore

After our trip, I loaded the rod up with the 6wt line and it was a different rod. This was a different trip. I'd say the wind was about the same as when we went.

I would like to try it. However, to be fair in evaluating it, it should be under the same conditions. So wading is out of the question, I need to stand in your drift boat, while floating the Delaware, and try it out in order to get the same orgasmic experience.

The dinghy must have a flat

One of you boobs who has nothing better to do should initiate a poll asking what the favorite action of fly rod we use is.
