Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

What'd everyone get

sstasiak

Super Pupa
So did anyone get any new fishing gear?

I got some reading material:

Lafontaine's "Caddisflies":applaudit
Dave Hughes "Wet Flies":applaudit

2 others that I need to exchange since they're very similar to ones I got last year.

And last but not least, a small assortment of flies in a box.

Not really any gear, but the books should keep me busy for a while.

Sounds like you got some very nice gifts the book by Lafontain is a really great information packed book had the pleasure of meeting him at the Henryville Flyfishing Club a number of years ago very interesting person and superb fisherman.

I was fortunate to recieve a dream gift this year an Winston BIIX 8' 6" 4pc. 4wt. can't wait to fish it very smooth flyrod I cast it at the Summerset show last year and dreamed about it ever since. And a couple of rooster necks from Collins Hackle a nice rusty dun and my favorite dark barred ginger nothing else to speak of but all in all Great Christmas setting down at the vice to put some of my new hackle to use.

It was a pretty good christmas for fishing goods. I got a nice pair of simms windproof gloves that I had wanted for awhile. I also scored a nice chest/hip pack by Fishpond, although that was more of a Graduation gift from last week. Plus a nice little fly tying book. Best of all I still get to pick myself a rod in the next week for a late xmas/birthday gift from my parents. I can't decied between the Winston Vapor and the legend Ultra though.

I got broke... :crap:

But fishing wise I did get a very nice C&R net :thumb:, a couple of Lucky Craft crankbaits, some other misc. bass fishing stuff.

Best of all the wife gave me some beer making ingredient kits, so that means it's time to pull out the brew kettle & wort chiller & cook up some stout! :beer1:

I got a nice little Okuma fly box with an assortment of flies in it, and I bought a Canon Digital Rebel XTI with a few lenses and some other accessories as a joint birthday and christmas gift to myself.

Edit: It takes really great macro shots of my not so great tying abilities!

Christmas day is my most favourite day of the entire year....

And I have so very much enjoyed reading about what Santa brought some of you.

My Christmas Morning 2006.

So as soon as my eyes opened, I was off with a flash to see what Santa had brought me.. As I rushed down the stairs thoughts of Able reels, St Croix spey rods, LL Bean anything... was running through my mind... and to my great surprise! Emanating from my Christmas stocking which I hung up on the fire place the night before, a wondrous trail leading to and nestled all around the Christmas tree .... coal.

14 hypo-vac bags later I am still trying to get the coal dust from the ceiling and the heater vents.

In all honestly, I was glad to hear what ya'll got, and can't wait to try Scott's home brew... lots and lots of his brew...

As always, removing coal dust on Christmas morning.

my fiance bought me a fishpond windwalker chest pack... cant wait to use it this weekend.

I was the recipient of an office grab bag gift, oh how I hate those things.
It was just what I did not want, a Rapala folding net with a long handle.
This will become a give away at the next TU meeting. So I bought my self a Sage Z Axis rod in a 6 weight, Merry Christmas to me.

Fishpond wading staff, Simms backsaver wading belt, Cortland leader wallet, "The Habit of Rivers" by Leeson, and a bunch of photography accessories.

I didn't get nothin. I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage.
no, that was Thanksgiving

Christmas:
I got some some underwear, and sox and i got to clean up after the christmas eve get-together. There's a lot to be said for coal.

Well, I thought I'd play it safe, so I asked for (and received) an auto inflatable PFD, so I should be ready if they pass new laws for floating the rivers. I probably should have one no matter what the laws are, since my current method has my PFD strapped in the pontoon boat so tightly I would drown before I could get it untied.

I used the 28-105mm USM lens at 28mm focal length and a macro adapter on the front of the lens. I'm not sure of the exact magnification specs of the macro adapter though. The 28-105mm lens is a really nice all around lens, and it really makes the 18-55mm lens that comes with the kit useless.

I got a chance to use the wading staff today for the 1st time. I should have gotten one of these a long long time ago (I've never used one in 20 years of wading rivers). I fished KLG from 730am-1pm. Usually after 3-4 hours on this stretch my knees and ankles are beat to a pulp. After I got done today, I could have gone another four hours. I was able to cover so much water I felt like Spiderman. With the staff I'm also able to get to spots that I normally wouldn't even attempt to cross to. It also helps that I've been wearing my Korkers to KLG for the last two trips. After almost breaking my leg on a nasty spill in March, I'm not taking any more chances.

So...if you've ever thought about getting a wading staff, do yourself a favor and get one. Not only does it make for safer wading, it also relieves a good deal of stress on your body and limbs and lets you get from point A to point B much faster.

I also got the LL Bean Emerger wading jacket for Christmas which I also used for the first time today. I like it. :thumb:

I got several small stocking stuffers(floatant,shot,leader/tippet material, etc.) and a nice rustic shadow box with 12 flies mounted inside from my Son. Very nice. Also, a FishPond cap and waterproof bag with a slime towel and T-shirt. To be honest, most of my stuff I just get throughout the year when I can. Someone mentioned a backsaver in a note. How are those things?? Do they do any good?

C&R:

Years ago while in PA I found a stick from a beaver dam, and have used it ever since. No matter what stream, water height, or flow rate, I carry mine. When not in use I stick it in the back of my wading belt to keep it out of the way, but handy if needed.

I use to toss it over my left shoulder ( I have a line attached to it and my wading belt), until one time when lifting it back to use, I somehow dislodged my fishing license holder, and lost it. The cost of losing it, 4 state's (NJ, PA, ME & NY) annual licenses.

It also comes in handy when fighting off wild critter's like beavers, water snakes, and to warn off otters. Not to good with bears I imagine.

As always, trying to stay upright in a stream and in life.

Mudpuddle, I used a back saver when I had some back problems and had lower back pain, it was helpfull. I have sinse done back exercises in the gym and no longer find it helpfull. If you hav a problem use it, better yet work on your back strength. If you do not have a problem it just adds more bulk and you probably dont need it.

was that you that was sittin there with me on the group W bench?
Yeah. That was me.
I had the sweet spot; between the Mother-raper and the Father-raper...

i don't give a Filipino Box Spring Hog if we smoked all my cigarettes
'cause we did it with glee.

Dig a big pit in a dirt alley road
Fill it with madrone and bay
Stinks like hell
And the neighbors complain
Don't give a hoot what they say

Kathleen was sittin down
In little reds recovery room
In her criminal underwear bra...

I got a food dehydrator, a six-pack of motor oil (for my overdue oil change) and the Pentax Optio W20 digital camera I asked for.

I did not get anything for Christmas. Now, before everyone starts to thinking too much, it's because I'm fairly well stocked up and it's difficult for my wife to identify something that she could purchase for me. BUT, right after Christmas I saw a beautiful custom Sage XP 9' 4 wt. on another site. I need (as fly fishers, you all understand the word "need!") a longer light-line rod and I have been wanting to build one, but I just don't have the time. This rod I'm getting is well made and a steal at the price. I could not have done a better job myself, especially for the price (as mentioned). I can't wait to get it and give it its baptism of fire!
