I had an experience this weekend that was really cool. I was fishing the East Branch of the Croton on Saturday morning and worked a good bit of the river with no luck. I finally just put on a bugger and was swinging it through the Bathtub Pool (for those familiar with the river, it is a long slow run right beneath a bridge that is usually very productive. It is also right by the road and entry points)
I noticed a guy sitting by the side of the river just watching the water. He asked me what I was throwing out there and I explained to him nothing was hitting so I was just swinging and stripping a bugger since I had tried everything else in my box. He proceeded to tell me that his name was Craig and that he ran a website called www.trout-streams.com
Well, he then started talking fishing and gave me a couple tips. Then he went back to his car only to come back with 4 flies that he tied that he knew would be productive.
I realized that this is part of the FF culture that is really something that sets it apart from a lot of other recreational sports. This guy took time out of his day to help a newbie out and even hook him up with some flies.
I just want to say that anyone who fishes the croton system, this website is a good resource as I have looked through it. Also, I did hit 2 fish after he had gone on what he called an upside down caddis.
Craig, the guy I met, guides out of the Bedford Sportsman but not once did he tell me to use his services. I actually mentioned I frequented a fly shop that he knows the guy who runs it because he used to guide with him. (Rov Lewis out of the Anglers Den) Craig actually told me to get Rob as a guide. His point was that ANY knowledgable guide would allow me to improve my fishing. I thought that was a first class move.
As he was leaving I thanked him for everything and he simply said not a problem, it is always good to see new people into the sport.
In general, I have to say, in my short time fly fishing there have been a bunch of people who have helped me out. A bunch on this forum, and a bunch I have met on the river. I think part of what attracts me so much to the sport is that once you get on the river, noone cares what you do for a living or anything like that. There is a lot of mutual respect.
So, thats my story. Just wanted to share. I can still remember fishing with an Irishman Jamie and some dude named JLAJOIE. Now THOSE guys were bastahds. (all kidding aside, they dealt with fishing with a new dude. and watching them helped me get into my first fish)
Now we just need Dr. Gonzo back from Bar studying.
