The Ausable

troutbum2live

Eventually the wrong fly will become the right one
Anybody been around to see it lately? I know TCO's report says chilly water and lots of run-off...

Going to be home next week from school and on the Ausable Thursday-Sunday after a long over-due appointment with a local favorite of mine on Wednesday<---Cast and Blast!

Also, Anyone doing the two-fly!?

Thanks guys

Ill be up NEXT WEEK! :) And Ill be up week after "Two fly". Gonna hit the St. Regis and Saranac religiously as well. CAN"T WAIT! First week in may is always a bit sketchy, as its that week or the week after they stock, but for the most part we have been very lucky. Plenty of fish.

I would like to believe the Ausable has holdovers, however riding past it every winter snowmobiling always makes me leary of this as the river is FROZEN SOLID. Only a TRICKLE coming over the "falls" right below Hungry Trout...If anything I would fish the Forks for some holdover action as its VERY deep or above Monument. let us know how you do! Hopefully its this week they stock :)

I will be on the Ausable like its cool all summer, I love that river!

I want to fish the St. Regis and Saranac more...any spoonfeeding for me :) haha...

I hope I run into you!...

Let me know if your gonna be in the area next week or the week after memorial day. Would love to fish with ya! Ausable is an AWESOME river, as is the St. Regis. SUCHHHH great nymphing water. The Saranac is also EXCELLENT! Hell, they are all TOP NOTCH!

Favorite stretch of river I have ever fished to date is St. Regis campgrounds to the old bridge pilings...Can't beat the school house stretch to the Forks on the West Branch though, or the "Notch" section. Next week can't come soon enough!

Simms,

I have seen fish come out of the Ausable that were NOT stockies. I have seen friends catch numerous 20+ inch Browns in an area not too far from where you are speaking of, a little ways off the beaten path. Notice I said friends and not me haha. I lead them to the spots though :). It is a great river and the scenery is second to none in this area.

I probably stocked those 20+ brutes. The county is the one who stocks the monsters...Everytime we see them up there (week befire 2fly) my buddies and I help them out and stock the whole C&R area...We walk WAYY back off the road in spots with the buckets and dump some monsters.

Your right, the scenery is insane! It never gets old!

Wow, that's neat. I guess I never knew fish of that size were stocked. Any idea where the hatchery is, that would be a neat place to check out.

Thanks,

Steve

Troutbum, that is a sweet avatar!!

I will have to make it up one of these weekends this summer and you can guide me! I am down for some hiking to find some fish.

I Dont Know CT, can you handle hooking trout approaching 20 inches not 20 lb. ? haha

By your hometown you certainly would know better than I but "the trout season" on ADK rivers like the Ausable don't really begin to get started until the beginning of May, some years late April, correct? It's not uncommon to find cold, high water this time of year, right? At least that's the reports I've read and heard. I usually go up with a group the weekend before the Two-Fly contest, we stay in Wilmington at the Wilderness Inn II. Good luck.

As for the St. Regis, I absolutely LOVE that river, totally worth the hour drive from Wilmington (about 45-50 miles.) Great trout fishing and not even half the pressure of the W. Branch Ausable. My favorite stretch also appears to be Simms' favorite stretch to fish! It's several miles worth of fantastic pocket water, perfect for nymphs as well as dries. I also like the Saranac a ton and probably fish that the most when I'm there. Oddly enough I'm the one in my group that likes fishing the Saranac better than I do the W. Branch Ausable. On the Saranac, head down thru Redford and start fishing the bridges, (Sam Tedford Bridge is a personal favorite) park, and fish both up and downstream of them. Trust me, you'll find the fish. Explore from there.

Thanks for the tips!

Yeah the trout season can be a little later than next week, just hoping for the best...Ill be off the salmon river and need my fly fishing fix!:smiley-sniffer:

Sam. T on the Saranac is my favorite spot on the Saranac. You have that HUGE pool to rip streamers through, and enough pocket water on either side of that small island to nymph. I do like the W. BRanch more than the Saranac, but more BIG fish have been taken out of the Saranac...

Yeah that pool is pretty neat, you can practically fit 5 anglers on EACH side and still have plenty of room and everyone can be on fish. I like to scramble upstream of the Sam T. Bridge and fish that pocket water as it drops down thru those boulders. I catch a lot of Rainbows that hold up thru there, I love 'em so I always target that stretch.
Often we'd finish up at the A. Forks in the evenings after dinner for some easy fishing and an ice cream cone at Stewarts.

Ryan,

Thats so funny you say that, cause every night after dinner we head to the forks and fish the West branch side. lol TONS of fish, and pretty easy fishin like you said. Also, if your interested, head up to the old school house on the West Branch side and fish down to the forks. INCREDIBLE water....

Yeah, I think you mentioned that place in an earlier post. I have nevr fished that area. I only fished the WB at A. Forks for maybe the first 100 yards, I thought much further above was mostly private. I plan to now when I head back up. The first night I had ever arrived up there I stopped there to fish before I had even checked in. I was in that little pocket water just up from the bridge when I hooked up with a very big brown trout. I ended up losing it but was so stocked for the rest of the trip. To date the biggest I've personally caught up there is 18 inches but I've lost two really big trout there too.

My mother in law is a dental hygenist, and her boss got hit by a train while fishing up there this past week. Any of you guys hear about that, or know anything about it? Apparently he was crossing a bridge, but I dont understand why he couldnt jump off.

He is my dentist as well...He was a fishing fool! It is such ashame! Everything stopped in the office when someone who fished came in. He was a great guy. He never fished the upper reaches of the Ausable, just the lower end. He loved to fish for the Salmon coming out of the lake. I have only fished that particular stretch of river once, however the bridge is pretty high. There would certainly have been broken bones on the decent. I just dont understand why he couldn't just hang off the side till the train passed? I can't seem to remeber what bridge looked like, I just know it was a bit high.

How did you do Rob? Headed up for week on Tuesday. Suppossedly they stocked two weeks ago.

I went to the Hungry Trout in Wilmington and Nancy said wolly buggers and streamers. She directed me to a couple of "pools" near Whiteface where my friend, whose house we were staying at, directed me to also.
I landed nothing.
These were no BFB pools, they were white water rapids! I will post some pics tommorrow. Had one monster follow my bugger right back to me then take off. And a small one made a nibble on the fly's tail but that was it. The water was 45 degrees and high and fast.
Still was alot of fun, hope to go back soon, still learning.

LOVE the whiteface stretch of the river. Amazing the elevation drop right after the bridge at Whiteface, eh. NICE fish there, esp down below the bridge aways, at the headwaters of the Hungry Trout water. Hope my luck is better than yours next week! haha Glad to hear you got out though!

im new to the forums just wanted to say hi in this thread seeing how i found it looking for a fish report on the ausable. planning on going up this weekend:eek:las:

Monster stone nymphs on size 8 or 6 hooks kill it in the whitewater of the Ausable. Looking to head up to our place about an hour from there soon.

Newby on this site.
Just got back from the West branch. First time ever on this river. What awesome scenery. Went up to Lake Placid with the wife and without the kids so I got to fish the mornings while my wife slept in. Thursday morning was rough, wind and rain. Couldnt find a fish but this morning was great. Caught three browns, one was fat and close to 17" and one rainbow. Fished below the Whiteface bridge and using a few tactics by Nancy the new owner of the Hungry Trout Fly Shop I had a great day. Lost one fish that I never saw but fought for a good few minutes. Felt huge but they always do when they get away. BH Hares ear and BH Prince nymphs size 8 with a little extra weight and an indicator did the trick. Gotta give kudos to Nancy for helping a Catskills guy catch fish on the Ausable. Two totally different animals. Cant wait to go back.
Dave
