Musconetcong River tour, Sunday October 5th

NEFF's own Jeff K will be leading a river tour of the Musky on Sunday, October 5th. Jeff is extremely knowledgeable about this river having lived and fished in its watershed most of his life. He shows sites and circumstances of several famous murders from the 1800s and early 1900s along the river corridor. I will be joining Jeff and talking a bit about TU's early efforts through our Home Rivers Initiative and we will see many of the dams and challenges facing the river as well as some of its better fishing spots:). See Jeff's message below for more details:

With all the activity on the Musconetcong a Muskie tour is scheduled for Sunday, October 5, 2008. Check how the river is shaping up with the Gruendyke dam removed and check out the Finesville dam – hopefully the next victim. Of course we will visit the Musconetcong Murder sites! Meet at 10AM at the Park& Ride Lot on Rte 46 just east of Hackettstown just at the bottom of Hackettstown hill. It can only be reached from the eastbound lane, so those coming from Rte 80 must make a U-turn just past the lot to get to the entrance.

Thanks for the heads up! gonna see if my brother in law's interested in making the trip with me

Jeff and I promise not to keep you all day so you can fish afterwards. Remember that the Musky has plenty of water in it due to the 5 yr. Lake Hopatcong drawdown (1" per day for a total of 6 feet). This is Jeff's "Murder-Mystery Tour". Learn all about the famous murders in the Musky watershed in the 1800s and early 1900s.:)

The one that is really in Morris Co. If coming from the east it is right at the bottom of the hill between the two lanes of traffic and presently has a bunch of bucket trucks in it. You can't enter from the westbound lane so turn around at the first U-turn past the lot - it is right about where the lanes merge for construction. Once you make the U-turn keep in the left lane since the road curves and the entrance to the lot comes very quickly.

From Hackettstown going eastbound, it is on the left 1/4 mile past the construction by the new Target store. When you get by the Animal Hospital on the left get in the left lane because the entrance will come fast.

Jeff,

Just got a request for you to lead a second Murder Mystery tour the following Saturday (11th) for some TU bigwigs and an important potential funder for our Home Rivers Initiative. I'll call you to see if you are free that morning.

Brian

I'm thinking of coming, but am new to NJ. I'm currently near Tight Lines in Pine Brook.

What is the easiest way to get to the pickup point? Route 46, I80, others?

If someone can provide a google maps, street address or intersection that would be great so I can plan my trip there.

Kurt

From Pine Brook, take Rte 80 west bound until exit 26 for Rte 46 west. Don't have to worry about the direction on Rte 46 since you can only go west. Don't know the the mileage from the exit exactly, but it is about 5 - 10 miles away. You will pass Budd Lake, then a bunch of car dealers and come to a light at Naughtright Rd . Keep going straight and then you only have a mile to go down the mountain. You will see the lot between the lanes of the divide highway - with a lot of bucket trucks in it from the construction. Take the first U-turn to get to it.

I was one of the 6 people that joined the tour. I would like to thank Jeff and Brian very much for taking the time and showing us around. I did enjoy the entire tour and would be happy to also learn about the other rivers in NJ.
Since this is my first post in this forum let my add a little bit about myself. I started fly fishing in spring this year. I have been reading in the forum a lot and found it to be very helpful. Maybe I will be able to contribute a little more in the future, until now I am still learning.
