Green stream brookies

[Barleywine]

Made a quick trip to one of my favorite brook trout streams, and was surprised to see so much green algae on the bottom. It really showed through bright green in the sunlight, and slimed up my fly when it sank.

The numbers and size of the fish were both down a bit from other years, but there were still quite a few of these guys who had a taste for a size 15 Missing Link Caddis. Water wasn't too low, but we could use some rain pretty soon.

Gotta believe that last year's low flows and our hottest ever recorded summer followed by a year of continued low flows - although not nearly as hot (so far) - led to increased algal growth and decreased fish populations in our coldwater resources.

I noticed a lot of this bright breen algae in places I have never seen it. I am thinking that once the trees leaf it will be shaded out.

This has been my experience as well....leaves come, algae goes...but it has been thick this spring, and last fall..
