Log jams

Tips on how to fish them. Saw some large browns deep in there and could not my flies down there without snagging. Thanks. Toilet humor welcome

You have two choices. Metamucil or a big streamer stripped tight to the jam and prayers that your 3X will hold when it slams the streamer so you can horse it out of that nasty tangle. Whichever you decide, both handle log jams.

I was using 6x and drifting tungsten nymphs down. It was a bad plan. No hits. I will try a streamer in the evening one night. I have yet to catch any wild fish on streamers.

Also on my morning fishing hike I cane across a largish PVC pipe duming directly into the river. It must have been comming from a far away housing development plus I was in a state park. I saw no fish below it. I imagine 100 degree water pours out of it after a summer thunder storm. I have a good mind to measure it and buy a cap for it and take care if it myself. Even if I followed it up 40 feet and cut it off with a hack saw the river would be better. I am almost positive it is illegal

The streamer method is much better, detecting a strike on a nymph fished in that manner can be quite difficult. IMHO a big streamer isnt needed just one with a shiny body. a 40 lb rock on pvc will work nicely as well...... As for the log jams, stop having your buddy pack them up in there creating the jam.....

streamer for sure. you need to get the fish's attention. I fish at least 2x while fishing streamers. 3x it too light if you are stripping it aggressively. dead drift 3x is ok but 2-0x on larger streamers imo.

get to know the spot like the back of your hand
go back at dusk with some mouse patterns
get in position and wait until it's dark and quiet, swim the mouse where appropriate (the fish may range from the log jam under cover of darkness)

worth a shot.

This sounds like a pretty darn good plan to me. Remember it's only illegal if you get caught

I looked at a map and I can see that where I was and I was in the park and I can see the house that is closest to the river is right about where I was. I decided I would try and do the right thing. The Morris County Park police were incredible they listened and promised to investigate. I got transfered around a bit and finally ended up with an officer who clearly cared about water quality. When I told the officer you will need waders and have to climb over a few log jams and it is quite an effort to get there. I said I would be happy to take somebody there and I have spare waders. He said that was no problem and they would send somebody out and they could contact me if they could not find it. He had a great amount of knoweldge of the area road names and he even knew that the river was special and had a lot of wild trout. Very impressed.

As for the mouse flies I think I will try some streamer's first and if not luck with that I try a mouse. I have never had any luck with them in the past.

Considering we are talking about log jams, wouldn't a gerbil pattern be more appropriate?
