Kype jawed browns

golden beetle

Anyone catch a nice kype jawed brown this fall?

Post a pic if you have.

I'm fascinated by the kype jaw phenomenon.

Why does it happen?

And how do their jaws go
back to normal by spring?

The generally accepted theory is that a kype is a secondary sexual characteristic asserting male dominance over other males. Trout & salmon use the kype as a weapon in running other males off.

Rest assured the beetle will not be developing a kype of his own any time soon.
