Is Sandy Hook worth a trip yet?

A Polinger

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Im going to have some time Friday morning and Im thinking of hitting the hook, has anyone been there?

Thanks,
AP

Water temp is 45... E winds 15 to 20 forecast... Have at it, though haven't heard of anything happening. Some bass around but at 45 F?

All the stripers are in the warm, shallow back bays feeding right now. Stay off the beaches, water is too cold.

Rusty is spot on and right now MOST of the bass wont chase a fly due to the cold water temps give it a few weeks.
Things will get going soon enough down there.

All of them? Wow! You must be walking on their backs :)

Shhh, don't let anyone know:)

Oh sure, they're swimming in the ocean and I'm sure the odd bait soaker or two is catching them from the beach, but I wait a couple more weeks most years to hit the salt with the fly rod. Last couple of years the action was already going on this time, but we're back to seasonable weather this winter and early spring so far.

Was on the Hook Thursday some bait around-Seals on it.
Dropped one schooly sized fish bay side
will give it two more weeks.
There maybe even some Blues by Then

wet

After my day on the hook there might be a nice SW outfit for sale soon. Im going to stick to freshwater.

Don't do it!!!! The spring season for FF off the beach is long over for striped bass, so don't quit on us yet. If you want blues, those you might still find and all summer long, but striped bass is a nighttime only game during the summer months which include June. Wait until October and even later if you want to catch the migration. But don't quit yet! PM me come late Sept. to chase Albies and blues, or again in mid-October thru December for stripers. The salt is far different from the sweet water...

Don't give up, I caught this last fall off the hook, from a boat but VERY close to shore.

I would have to disagree with these posts. I fished the hook on Tuesday from noon until 5 and landed 2 bass and a nice 12 to 15 pound blue that I made my girlfriend reel in. ( which was hilarious because shes under 100 pounds and was violently shaking) I am fishing the hook tomorrow with a couple buddies leaving at 7 and fishing the incoming tide from 10 until about 2 . Fish were feeding plenty it seemed.

I would say give it a shot. If no luck, youre still relaxing on the beach. :nose-picking:

Ahhh youth..... maybe next time you guys can head to the Gunnison Beach area....

Any size to the blues? The guys getting out I've spoken with have all noticed a lack of larger fish this year so far. I've only been out once myself, so I can't comment, but we only found cocktails ourselves.

There are big fish in for sure buddy! Have been doing good on L.I. couple 30lbs and good numbers of fish in the thirty plus inch range range. Bigger and bigger fish have been showing.. They have turned on to the fly for sure to the point where its out producing the hardware where we have been fishing.

Nothing of real size. The biggest was probably around 25'' but the rest averaged 18 or less.

Go to belmar... set the rods up on the beach next to inlet, and take your 7' MH rod with (2) spro bucktails (high low rig) and yank fluke out of the inlet while you wait for the surf rods to double over.... zingggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Was on the hook thursday ,short bass and 3 blues not big but 18 to 23" blues are fun.
Don't give up the salt yet wait til OCT.
Now till Sept play in the back side for fluke with small clousers
Oh Thursday I took the long walk in the am to fish

no bass at the hook on friday morning. a few blues here and there. going thursday morning again.

Heard there is a lot of junk in the water and surfcasters are bothered by lots of it on their line. Fluke hitting pretty good. Any rodders out there?

Im thinking of taking a trip to the hook tomorrow afternoon. I don't know if anything is their but I just need to get down there.
