Fox fur

Dennis C. has a pic with a fox around my neck...you can snatch that from me...

Seriously, I learned decades ago that in order to get the shades of Fox that you desire it's best to purchase an entire pelt. Which is not as expensive as might think--in the long run. When buying in small packages--through online, you never know what shades of fox will arrive for use. Entire pelts will give you enormous variety of shades---beautiful lights and dark duns..and buffs. What amazes me is the differences of shades between pelts even. I have maybe 1/2 dozen Red Fox pelts.

I get mine from a place called Moscow Hide and Fur, in Idaho. ( http://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/6900.html ). You can order online. The webpage shows that exact pelt you might be interested in buying with description notes as well as the photo. Note that you do not need the high end "taxidermy" grades. They have lower priced "defect" grades---I bought mine for around $45. There is one on the list for $25. (They go up to $140, taxidermy quality)

Guys (and ladies) will spend in a second $60 for one hackle cape---yet not fork out $45 for a pelt that will last years. You will not be diappointed. They ship fast and are nice folks. I've purchased Muskrat pelts from them too---they have it all--nicely tanned

I do trap---or used to trap---but the above tactic is easier in the long run

Thanks guys,

Was looking at some recipes for hendricksons that called for fox. I know I can get dubbing packs but wanted to see if I could get the "real" thing.

Will take a ride over to tightlines soon. I have been meaning to go there. I also like the whole hide idea and that site also has alot of other nice stuff.

I've heard urine-stained fox fur is good for Hendricksons. Always made me wonder, though - years ago maybe some smooth talking fur salesman snookered some fly tyer into buying piss-covered pelts he was having trouble unloading, and now it's become the standard.

I may have found my calling......

Thanks, trout I hadn't thought of that. :hysterica

I have thought of shooting one, but the season is over,... next year.

I have also seen the recipes that call for urine stained fur, I think that is what they were originally tied with. Fawn fox belly was given as an alternative. From what I have gathered urine stained fur is impossible to find(unless you make it yourself). And fawn fox belly is is pretty tough also. I'll take a trip to Tightlines to see what they have.

It really isn't that big of a deal. I do have hendrickson pink dub, I just wanted to compair the different materials. I'm sure the fish don't notice.

I watched a red fox get tumbled along I-78 on monday morning.....and i it had not gotten thrown into the median....I would have stopped for it. But it wasn't worth dyin for:^)

Troutbum,

I have been tempted many times to pull over for some roadkill. I could be knee deep in deer and squirrel tails alone. There is also a hunt club in Sparta where you can find pheasant along the road almost every day. I should start carrying rubber gloves and ziplocs in my truck.
