Lakes/Ponds Around Middlesex County

Hey guys,

I live in East Brunswick and now that it's too hot for trout I'm looking for some good stillwater fly fishing. Does anyone know of any lakes and/or ponds that don't require a boat to fish? I'm looking mostly for large mouth and pickeral. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not still water, but what's wrong with smallies in the Raritan? You also have Farrington Lake in town or on the western edge of your town. Not sure how the fishing is in the Plainfield Preserve, but there's a large body of water there that looks fishy. Best of luck!

Thanks! I've been fishing the raritan for smallies using streamers without any luck. Any suggestions on a good spot? I'm a beginner and get skunked everywhere I go .

You are likely not getting nearly deep enough. Lots of smallies in the Raritan. Use weighted streamers and add weight if you don't snag bottom once in a while. Make sure your leader and tippet are long enough to get deep, a mistake many newbies make.

I grew up in Marlboro and fished some of the surrounding area a bit when I was younger. It's been many years now but I caught some nice bass & pickerel below the dam at Weston's Mill Pond and also saw some giant carp caught in the pond itself.
Lake Manalapan over in Monroe is another good one for bass, crappie, etc.
Not sure if you can legally access them these days or if they ever really were legal to fish but the Duhernal reservoirs were always popular.

Forgot to mention Molder's Fishing Preserve next to Raceway Park. It's pay-to-fish but is loaded with bass, catfish, and other species. One of those places everyone should try at least once.

Thanks! I've fished duhurnal and caught saw nice sized channel cats. I've been to Moulder's too but wouldn't go again. I'll definitely check out those other places

I only target trout in the Raritan and in the South Branch nearly exclusively. Access for the public is limited on the North Branch Raritan.

No, I prefer to chase smallies in the big D. I just don't know the mainstem Raritan well at all. But I have many friends that fish it regularly and do well, especially for smallies.
