Fly Boxes

MACFLY

Too many streams too little time
I just received a new fly box in the mail from blue ribbon flies that features a slim profile design and a magnetic base with hard foam dividers. While it's not much to look at I like the idea of a slim design for a fly box. I own a bunch of different boxes and I'm wondering what you all use and like Best

I like the new "tacky" fly boxes, a slim design with silicone slit dividers that really grab and hold hooks better than any foam I've used.

im also a big fan of flambou blue ribbon boxes. I like their slotted foam design a lot.

Mac,I have a 6 compartment one like that. It is great for my small caddis and midges. I never really had and preference on boxes. I just buy something then over stuff them so I can't find anything. Every year I try to get better organized but it never works.

I like my plastic orvis trout print boxes. A little bulky though.

The worst boxes have to be those bug luggage boxes. They just flat out suck.

Just got 2 of those in the mail yesterday, Mac. Haven't actually put any flies in them yet -- hopefully the magnets are legit..

Craig Matthews has been pushing those boxes hard in the BRF weekly newsletter.....says the magnets are legit and hold his dry midges in high wind.....
I have been thinking about ordering a couple.....let me know how they work out please.. .....i use the foam slot ones..got them at shannons forget the brand, im not unhappy with them.....

I use different boxes for different flies. I have 2 main dry fly boxes that are both alike, a much larger nymph box because those are what my clients will lose the most of, a long box for streamers, etc. I'm not a one size fits all angler, I guess.

I use the cliff super days worth boxes. Its got a leaf with foam with slits for streamers traditional foam strips on the front and it flips open to magnetic divided compartments

I like the C&F system boxes with the snap in sleeves. I arrange my sleeves by season. Tried all the alternatives, everyone's always trying to find something better for cheaper, but I still like C&F the best.

YOu will find those foam compartments are a real pain in the butt getting your midges unstuck from the magnet. Especially with your sausage like appendages

I can relate to not ever getting organized:)

Fact. I always have my box all organized come spring - and then after one weekend of fishing I'm all mixed up again. Tough to give a damn where u put your fly back into the box mid hatch when fish are rising . That said- everyone has their organized mess and knows where they have their good shit hiding in their box/vest. Ah but that said- everyone has needed that one fly , thought they didn't have it- only to find it later that evening after they got schooled . All part of the fun. Personally- I like the Richardson style chest lack with 5 boxe but it have a plastic version bc the metal ones rust the hooks over time. Chest pack is nice bc u can wade deeper without flooding your boxes out.

Good morning.

I like Morell.

They float.

Tight lines,
TR

Yes I have a sausage like appendage and Im uncomfortable that you have seen it. Stop spying on me

I just realized I accidentally pushed the middle finger button on my phone while posting this. Sorry Mac

I carry 5 fly boxes of different sizes and shapes for different flies. I do like the foam boxes for nymphs, wets, and streamers, but also carry both a Wheatley and J Stockard multi compartment box and prefer the wider box for many of the full hackled Catskill and Marinaro style thorax duns with prominent wings that I use. On the flip side I have a small 6 compartment pill box that I added magnetic strips to that I carry tiny Klinkhammer type flies in. I also have a separate plastic foam lined box that I carry my Summer flies and terrestrials that stays in the back of my vest until late June and trades position with the Wheatley. I admit to being a touch OCD in carrying so many patterns, but my vest accomodates them easily and the weight has never been a concern.

I carry 3 standard fly boxes with flies I know will work most of the time and one box as a catch all (Unorganized box). I also have 7 fly boxes that coincide with my journal. I have found that when I keep accurate records on the streams that I fish. I can set up a box for a given time period of flies that should be effective for that stream at that time of year. I have no preference to the type of box that I use. ( It is means to hold flies to me and nothing more than that) I have boxes that range from a box that I paid 25 cents for at flee market to a $120 Wheatley.

We all carry too much shit. I try to limit myself to no more than 2-3 boxes when I'm wading, one large box and 2 small. When I'm floating though, all bets are off, I bring the bag. Sits right on top of the cooler.

I do not carry too much shit....I find I carry just the right amount of shit......I never feel bloated on the river, but do not have an empty feeling either...four spools of tippet, three different sized shot, one leader(just in case), nippers, roach cl(I mean forceps), three fly boxes, a net, a rod, a reel, some line, frog's fanny, waders, a giant framing nail, and my magnifying glasses for cooking ants if nothing is biting....

If I am going on a long trip into the woods, I bring a roll of TP(to un-load excess shit), a drink, and some food also........

I carry 7 boxes year round. Sure, I sometime leave one or two out knowing there is no possible way I might need a certain fly (grasshoppers in winter, for example). But all my boxes have my name, email and phone # on them in case I lose one. Shannon's is awash in old fly boxes we have never married back up to their original owners because there was no name/contact info on them. P-Touch is your friend!

I just bring a gillie to carry all my stuff.
