Floating the West and Main branches of the Delaware.

If you guys had to do it, where would you float on the West and Main branches of the Delaware during May. Just curious.

OH NOOOoooooo.....

Don't do it.. don't become one of THEM...

That river is evil. Just look at all the people on NEFF that fish that river...

they are evil.....

Not much of a 'floater' but I guess I'd start at either Hale Eddy or Balls Eddy and go down into the mainstem.

Most people aren't.

After they drown the stay submerged for about three days, then rise to become "floaters" for a day or so until the build up of gasses with in their body escape, and then they go back down and hug the bottom.

Best to fish for them within the first few hours as emergers, after that wet fly technique on a "dead" swing (no pun intended), then as a dun, and lastly hug the bottom with your favourite nymphing technique with a strike indicator or not.

Chris,
This is too much like those easy rivers in western NY. Too easy, you would hate it.

The question is when in May? Early during the Hendrickson hatch, later during the March Browns or later still when the sulphurs and drakes begin? There are other hatches to consider as well. Yes, I am one of "them" :)

The mainstem starts and ends earlier than the upper WB with hatches, for example and you need to know what's happening and where. The further upstream, the colder the water and later the hatches. Trying to second guess them is half the fun while trying to avoid the crowds is half the problem...

It all depends on water conditions and flow. Generally speaking I do the following. On the Main Stem I float from Buckingham to Long Eddy. The West branch I float from Hale Eddy to Shehawkin or Hale Eddy to Buckingham. Hale to Buck is nice in that you hit both the lower West as well as the upper Main in one day. Can be very productive. Good Luck!! P.S Will be up on the Salmon April 3-5th with my boat. See you on the river

Well in that case I am just going to stay home. Haha. Western, NY can be too easy, but it's a game of sit and wait for the right water conditions. Thank god I didn't go out there this weekend. It was slow for my buddies. Oh well, what can you do.

Onto the Delaware. I am asking these questions for a friend who was curious. He has a boat, and if I were to go down there, I would most likely fish from his boat. Really nice Hyde aluminum low side.

CT,

It all depends on your definition of float.

Most WB guys here despise float fishermen.

I prefer the Main Stem for a float but I let the water dictate where I go. If the Main Stem is cold enough, float it. If it isn't, do the WB.

then go jet boating up the Beaverkill.

Cdun considers himself one of fly fishing elite.

Elitism is the belief or attitude that those individuals who are considered members of the elite—a select group of people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes—are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern.

AHhhhh.... I don't think he fits any of that definition.

For those that didn't catch the pun...a float fisherman on the SR is a centerpinner.

The marathon float from East Branch to Cadosia on the E Branch may be cool. It is too much for most.

Of course the real decider is the weather.

Guys:

"Weenie Whistles" can be purchased either at WBA or DRC. That's where they originated from.

Ohhh.....I believe Border Waters have some left too.
