fishing the past week

flyI4

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
I was out for several days over the past week and had mixed results with some days being better than others. The march browns have largely eluded me this season, and it seems they are already waning on a few sections that I fished recently. March brown patterns still worked during certain times on fish. Sulphers were underway on most streams but daytime conditions were bright so many of the larger fish stayed down until 5:30 and later once the sun began to set. Spinner falls were pretty epic on most evenings and you could fish into the night catching fish based on sound if you are experienced with night time fishing and have a good sense of where your fly is through good line control. Overall, I think sulphers are going and here to stay for a while, march browns are just about done, and drakes are starting to show though the duns seemed to do little to attract fish to the surface. With the sunny forecast ahead, fishing should remain a later in the day sort of game for consistently rising bigger fish. The day time was a lot of looking and a few fish here and there.

A side note I need to mention is to newbies with pontoons-----it is not effective to park on the bank where the fish are and to sneak up on them. They see you if your walking downstream and they rarely will eat if you are throwing line upstream. Furthermore, its frustrating for anglers who are fishing from the other side and can catch that fish you just spooked. I actually had a guy hit me with the old cliche "do you think you own the river" when I asked him what the hell he was doing casting to a fish from the far bank when I was throwing to the same fish from the other side. I replied "how about a fly lines worth" which by his facial expression seemed to be way beyond his customary limit, basically 1 reason I rarely fish the upper wb anymore. There's very little respect up there and its taken place long enough now that people who fish there have actually come to accept it rather than stand up against it.

To end on a postitive note, I was by myself most of the trip so didnt take many pics, but here is a pic of a nice brownie I was lucky to find during the day. Took him on a sz 20 spent caddis

Sweet brown!

Thanks for the report.

I will be up that way in a few days.

That place just sucks you in.

yeah it really does nothing beats taking a big fish on a dry, which is a likely possibility on every trip you take up there.

We saw a lot of that late last week when we were up for 4 days. Two of the pontoons were guys from Canada staying at a cabin near ours at the WB Angler. They couldn't make decent casts wading or from their boats, so they simply rowed them ashore on the far bank and walked that bank, putting down every last fish. I watched those guys part of 3 days and never saw even a single fish landed amongst them.:)

Luckily they noticed that I could reach that far bank and left me alone when I was after the big bank sippers. Seemed to me a lot of effort to row the boat downstream, then up and across only to row back upstream later on or pull their boats back up the side channel when they could have waded across in any number of places to stalk the far bank.

Banana boat, banana boat, banana boat fish.....more than ever, banana boats...not many "real" fly fisherman out there anymore.

the CDun:)

JC I am hoping to get up there next week, mid week before the holiday weekend. Let me know if your around.
Will be bringing my banana boat with me :)

I actually only have work 3 days next week so I can swing that boomer I'll give you a call once I know what days I'm working.

March Browns are not done you drama queens, I was just up there. Big ISO's are out also, along with a few random drakes (fish were not on them).

I also fished the upper WB last week - on foot. Only had a long lunch hour on Thursday. Water was clearing & high, swung some flies anyway. Was amazed at how many boats were out.

Didn't really think I would settle on a branch, but it's pretty clear I'm turning towards the Main. Especially, with alternative floats.

Good running into you in Lydia's, JC. I'll be in town Thursday - Sunday AM. No DB this weekend. Look for me in a Scadden BA-NA-NA.
