Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
I was out for several days over the past week and had mixed results with some days being better than others. The march browns have largely eluded me this season, and it seems they are already waning on a few sections that I fished recently. March brown patterns still worked during certain times on fish. Sulphers were underway on most streams but daytime conditions were bright so many of the larger fish stayed down until 5:30 and later once the sun began to set. Spinner falls were pretty epic on most evenings and you could fish into the night catching fish based on sound if you are experienced with night time fishing and have a good sense of where your fly is through good line control. Overall, I think sulphers are going and here to stay for a while, march browns are just about done, and drakes are starting to show though the duns seemed to do little to attract fish to the surface. With the sunny forecast ahead, fishing should remain a later in the day sort of game for consistently rising bigger fish. The day time was a lot of looking and a few fish here and there.
A side note I need to mention is to newbies with pontoons-----it is not effective to park on the bank where the fish are and to sneak up on them. They see you if your walking downstream and they rarely will eat if you are throwing line upstream. Furthermore, its frustrating for anglers who are fishing from the other side and can catch that fish you just spooked. I actually had a guy hit me with the old cliche "do you think you own the river" when I asked him what the hell he was doing casting to a fish from the far bank when I was throwing to the same fish from the other side. I replied "how about a fly lines worth" which by his facial expression seemed to be way beyond his customary limit, basically 1 reason I rarely fish the upper wb anymore. There's very little respect up there and its taken place long enough now that people who fish there have actually come to accept it rather than stand up against it.
To end on a postitive note, I was by myself most of the trip so didnt take many pics, but here is a pic of a nice brownie I was lucky to find during the day. Took him on a sz 20 spent caddis
