Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

The future communist of NEFF is claiming I do not contribute anything of value to this board. So as I woke up this morning at 5am, the sun just beginning to peak over the horizon, the temp read 31 degrees, I convinced myself this was a perfect day for new beginnings! I packed up my gear and headed west. Where? All ill say is the Quabbin Res. area. For those familiar with this area, you know of the virtually only river this time of year harboring LARGE fish and LOTS of them... Largest fly of size 22-24 should give it away too...

Got there at about 730am with not another car in sight...Rigged up the 8'3'' Loomis GLX, with a size 24 red midge and a size 22 zebra midge under a size 12 black stone with a white post as my indie, GINKED.

I targeted the slower/depper runs at first as the water only read a measley 36 degrees. The berkshires still have feet of snow, so it's gonna be a while before temps start to read our target 50-56degree temps...Oh well.

4th drift down the run my stone slightly got tugged back up stream and I set, trying not to break off the 2lb flouro I was using. This hefty rainbow quickly woke up and sizzled my drag down stream. I actually had to follow it down. A few minutes later, this beautifully colored bow came to hand...

With a successful release, I walked down about 10 yards from my previous spot and again made a few drifts. With no luck, I moved down one more time before I told myself to seak out a new spot. On the last cast, the stonefly just stopped, and I lightly set the hook. Another rainbow was ont he line, this one much brighter than the last. It didn't take as much drag as the 1st one, but sat at the bottom of the run dogging me. Had to wait to tire this brute out before I began bringing him slowly in. 2lb test is not forgiving...

So, I moved down past the "pipe" and fished the faster runs for sheets and giggles. 2nd cast I hooked up on smaller bow, and he came right in. Perhaps the faster water already had him tired out? Again, for the 3rd time, the zebra midge produced...

With prior engagements, I only had time for a few more casts. So, I made my way down to a long pool where some black stones were working. The sun was beating directly onto it. No fish were working, but that doesn't mean they wont come up for the stone...

The 10th presentation, this beautiful 'bow carefully sipped my blackstone off the surface. Giving it a few seconds, I then lightly lifted the rod tip and it was on! Suprisingly, the bow jumped about 3 times. A sight to see in temps not even near 40 degrees. After he tired himself out, he fell quickly to the backbone of the GLX...Sorry for the quality of this pic...Camera battery died so it is a cell phone pic...If you look close, you can see the stone at the tip of his mouth...

Again, another successful release and beautiful day on the water! In another 2-3 weeks, depending on your location in the state, fishing will be in full swing!!! Tight lines all!!!! Look for another report on Tuesday evening from me...Fish should be hungry, so gonna try to throw some meat and potatoes at them!! Size 8 olive buggers and matukas! STAY TUNED!!!!!

An OUTSTANDING FLY FISHING REPORT.

If I say so myself.

I don't give these out too often, but this post is well deserving.

BRAVO ZULU.

You little bigot.

Thank you, fellow warrior Impi. Look for another report on Tuesday evening. Going to be targeting 'bows on a local river. Hopefully SOME at least survived the horrid summer... Get ready for weekly reports. You're not gonna know what hit you. Before you know it, youll make me a partner while reigning here on NEFF... ;)

Decent report....

But what's with all the add and brand name dropping? We can see you're a gear whore by your avatar.

Also, what's the sense of running leader that light when 3.6lb or straight 3lb floro is more than enough?

To each his own I guess.

Regarding the brand name "dropping", I mentioned the rod I used...Is there an issue with that? A large portion of the reports allude to the gear they use. I assume your not a loomis guy?
As for my choice of tippet, due to the hooks I tied my midges on, 3-4lb test would not make the knot I wanted or it could be that you should add 1-2lb sizes onto the advertised MAXIMA labels, lol.. Also, 3.6lb is considered "heavy" during this time of the year on this river..Ask any of the locals and old timers that fish this FFO area, they are using 1.5lb on most occasions...Again, if you knew this river you would understand...I guess its something youll just have to ponder...

Tight Lines!

Ctobias, why do you constantly need to pick apart other ppl's reports and act like a know it all. Too many times your responses reak of the competitive, I knowmore than you over inflated ego tone that accompanies too many experienced fisherman in the sport. Who cares what tippet strength he was using he had a nice day and caught some fish. End of story

Well said. "know it all", you said it nicer than I would have. lol Beautiful 'bow in your avatar, btw.

Some really thin skin around here lately. Some of you need to get out and fish more.

I never said I know it all. However, I do know a little about a lot of things. I criticized him for mentioning the brand of rod he was using in a report and the strength of leader he chose. Big deal.

It's understandable to put the weight of the rod you were using in a report, sinking or floating line, leader size, etc. I never was one for paying more then a rod was really worth.

As for loomis rods, well considering their owned by shimano now and Gary Loomis isn't even designing their blanks, no, I do not like them to answer your question. Why pay for a rod that has the cost figured into it for the anticipation of a customer returning it 3 times.

That's correct for those of you that don't know." High End" rod manufacturers figure you're going to break your rod and return it to them at least three times. So you might as well get your moneys worth and break it at the end of every season to get a new one.

As for the leader deal. I had no problems running my size 26 midges using 3lb floro or even the 3.6lb floro.

Contrary to your statement, GARY LOOMIS is designing the blanks...I spoke to him IN PERSON at the Somerset show...Also, take a gander the yellow stone anglers page..The loomis GLX/CC/NR have been in the top spots since they came out...

I also have never broke a loomis rod. In fact, my sages have been sent back more times than I care to admit... Then again, I am extremely hard on my equip, but the fact that my loomis rods have never been in the hands of UPS or Fed ex, says something...Now, standing up to a streamside beating in the LFZ of the salmon river by a Mahoney brother, I do think it's demise would be met...

Glad to see you got some fish! Why do they look so beat up? Are they fresh stockies?

The trout at the Swift River get slammed like no other. There is a pool called the "Y Pool" where the outflow from the lake comes together with the overflow from the lake. There are a ton of stocked/holdover rainbows there. I have fished there 3 times and I was surprised at how tippet shy the fish were. 7 and 8x were needed to catch some of the fish when sight nymphing. Some of the fish look good, but others look beat. I have never seen a nice looking large brown trout there, but I did see a lake trout that someone told me got washed over the top of the lake.

There is an other spot near a hatchery outflow downstream. It's a seasonal catch and release area. I went there once when it was c and r and the other two times where during the kill season. So it's safe to say that one time it was loaded and the other two times it was not so good! I heard that there are a few brook trout in there but I didn't see any.

The strange thing is that besides those two spots, there really isn't a ton of other fishable water. The stream is literally a channelized ditch with a ton of stockers in a few areas. It's fun for a few hours if you are in the area.

I have a friend who lives in Greenfield Mass. I like the Millers River a lot. Too bad it get so hot in the summer. That could be a good one!

Millers is my favorite river...Last summer was the only summer in the last 5 years I have been here, that it got WAYYY ot hot to fish...SOME fish did survive, though! I caught some in the fall in the bearsden section...

I love taking the kayak down the Millers...I can hit al the little honey holes... it sure as heck would be a good one, AJ!!!
I love the deerfield, as well...Just stinks you can only fish it before 12pm each day...
