Feast or famine! What the ___________!

DISCLAIMER: This is another rant about meat hunters. Please leave if you are sick of hearing about this, or stay and bathe in the hatred of these swines...

It all started just a few short weeks ago when I was on my way home from school one evening. I decided to stop off and check out one my local haunts to observe the condition of the river. Shocked to see another soul, I pulled in to see a guy sitting in his truck with, of course, a SPINNING ROD, sticking out of the window. I pulled up and asked him if he had been out.

"I have not been out since last spring, but the stocking truck is on its way."

What the ________! "How do you do know of this?"
"Well, this time every year a few of us live close enough tot he hatchery to figure out whats going on."

AKA, these clowns POST the hatchery...

So I sat there, waiting for the stocking truck, free admission, to the soon circus. Sure enough, stocking truck pulled in and 9 cars followed. They launched the fish in the bridge hole and everyone was on them like STINK ON SHIT. Each person, mind you there were 10 of them, had there limit in 32 minutes. Within 40minutes, the first group of people were ALL gone, followed by the stranglers.

WHAT A SHAME! All those beautiful fish are now getting freezer burnt, waiting to be accompanied by next week's stocking.
For the last 4 weeks, I have been regularly fishing, I have encountered only a handful of fly fishermen, NONE OF WHICH had creels on them. We all exchanged our sheer dissapointment with the harvesting practices of these yocals.
Every spin rod guy (im not judging) had a stringer filled, or waiting to be filled, that I came accross...
BEAUTIFUL fish, DEAD.

80% of these animals are people I see EVERY WEEK, filling the stringers. WHAT GIVES!

I was able to sneak out opening day in Jersey, above Shaefers Bridge on the BFB...There were 3 old LOCALS there, with the spin gear of course...I went back to NJ last week and THERE THEY WERE again, now that bait season closed in the FFO stretch, with there FLY RODs and reels filled with mono...I kenw they were the same due to the apparel they worse then and now...The "chitter chatter" of the stringers gave them away too...

But what is it about these guys CONSTANTLY keeping all these fish? EVERY SINGLE DAY if they could, they WOULD! I was asked to hand over some fish I was catching up here in MASS due tot he fact this animal wanted to fill his stringer...I resectfully said, "No, I practice catch and release." FLAMMED, said some colorful expletives at me, and demanded my fish... I realsed my current fish and moved on, not wanting to deal with this bullshit...

These people CAN"T BE STARVING, so they must enjoy just KILLED all these beautiful fish...SHIT, they survived the last 10months without PELLET FED trout, im sure they can survive TROUT SEASON without them...

I am in NO WAY flamming everyone who keeps fish. There are even some of us, EXTRAORIDINARY fly fishermen who keep a few a season to throw on the smoker...Hell, thats awesome... BUT, were not out there, day after day, or stocking week day after stocking week day FILLING the chain of death up...

These are the same CLOWNS who complain come mid june that there are no fish left!!!! Sure, we all find fish all season long, despite the circus that comes to town April 9th -Memorial day, but think about the fishery that we could have if the limit was just decreased a bit or more FFO, NO KILL stretches employed... Easier said than done, but you catch my drift...

I still can't fathom the need to KILL everything you catch, day in and day out...A trout is not that good tasting, jesus christ..I realize we all pay the same license fees and want to get their moneys worth...BUT HOLY HELL! All I need to do is be outside next to a river to get my moneys worth, not even wetting my line...

heres to the clowns getting a clue!!!!:beer1: I gues well be drinking for a long time,,,,

It's the age-old dilemma caused by stocking itself. The mentality is that if I pay for a stamp (for the state to raise and stock trout/pheasants/etc) then I am entitled to kill my limit each and every time out. Eliminate all of the stocking or lower creel/bag limits. Those are the only options. Most states refuse to do either because they need those license and stamp fees to cover their administrative costs to run their F&W agencies.

Do what I do, don't fish near the bridges or known holes where a stocking truck can easily dump fish and you won't see this behavior nearly as often. It's legal, so there is nothing that can be done about it other than to press your state agency for better conservation practices on certain high quality waters that best support wild or holdover trout.

Just don't fish were they stock. Were I fished last week it is all wild trout in this stretch of river. They stock about 3 miles upstream of the wild section and on friday when they were stocking it was packed.Funny thing is that they put 75 fish in that stretch. The wild stretch holds over 800 fish in a 330 yard stretch but sees far less pressure.I'm happy when the guys are out chasing the stockies because it means that I will have the best stretches of river to myself. Most baiters and hackers think that if a river is not stocked it has no fish in it. Let them keep beleiving that.

Guys,

You bring up valid points and I do just that..Trust me...HOWEVER< its when I make the walk to and from the lots when I get outraged... I even saw NATIVES, yes, NATIVESSSSS ont he stringer the other day. Another reason that sparks this hatred...

I feel your pain kinda like the welfare locals that keep all the spawned out steelies . Come on now half the people live and eat better then most and have no worries why keep the fish they certainly dont need them to survive

Pains me to see people keep the wild chrome, let alone the "regular" ones...I could care less if you kept every salmon that came up the river (of course letting enough through for the egg collection at the hatchery) but species that reproduce and survive, its ashame...

Artie, pray for lower water...see you Sunday hopefully...

I'm just having fun with you. You're still fairly young and these things bother you more than us middle aged duffers. We're just happy to be on the water. Plus our eyes are going and we can't tell who's fly and who's spin fishing.

(but I have to admit hating the sound of a rattling metal stringer)

Not that this is enforceable, but back in MT we had a "possession limit". It would be something like 4 brown/rainbow trout, max 8 in possession. I think that means it's technically illegal to fill your freezer, as if anyone out there cares either, just less people/more fish.

Rusty, my comment wasn't a shot at you...I really should invest in some blinders...lol

Yours is a rant that never gets old to me. monday morning i ran into a guy in VT who saw me fishing, we spoke for a minute, and he proceeded to tell me how he caught so many fish last year in the salmon river that he had to give them away, I responded by asking why he didn't just let them go rather than take more than he will ever eat, his response was they just die if you release them, i told him he should give it a try and if handled properly they will live..... I have heard this from many guys in the over 65 crowd.

You talking about the Salmon River in NORTHERN NY or the Salmon river in Pulaski, NY? The salmon that come up the river in PULASKI, DO in fact die...

If half of the salmon that people kept were ever ate people would stop keeping the them once they tasted them .
