Delaware River Guides Absent Again

Big_Spinner

Hi All,

It seems to me that the group that has complained the most about the conditions on the Delaware this year are the same ones that were noticeably absent from the FUDR "Water, Water, Everywhere" meeting this week.

It was an opportunity to talk directly with the decision makers and let them know what problems are out there.

Very disappointing!!

Here is a challenge: The DRBC has an RFAC (Regulated Flow Advisory Committee) meeting scheduled for December 3rd. Should be plenty of time to make plans to attend and there should not be any excuse like "I had a client on the river, have to make the money"

The 31st of May is the expiration date of the current FFMP one year extension. Time is short to make your voices heard and to help work toward improvements to the current flow plan.

Jim

It's kinda what we see right here at NEFF, Jim.

When conditions are poor, they flock here to bitch...
about the plan, about the people involved...
but then they disappear.

Try getting the meeting scheduled during the next streak of hot weather or low flows, that might help attendance. ;)

I spoke to Paul Rush of NYC DEP back in late July and said that the Main Stem UDR was fishing superb all the way to Callicoon - every day - with that 1,500cfs release from Cannonsville from July 8 through the end of July.

Water didn't get over 65 by 7pm.

A few of the clients I took out he know from his high school days at Monticello HS.

Tight lines buddy.

Hi TR,

Not sure of your point. What does this have to do with the lack of participation from the guide community?

Jim.

Why don't you write a letter to every NPS licensed guide like Boyar did and await their responses?

Tight lines amigo.

Hi TR,

I have heard from several guides.

I think they need a fellow licensed guide to direct into action. Please take the lead in organizing a group of guides to attend the RFAC meeting. I think it is the best way to get your concerns out there and as a group you will be a force.

I will see you all there!!! December 3rd

This is when we can get some improvements in the new plan, not on a hot day in July next year, when the deal is already cast in stone.

Mobilize all of your New Jersey clients to either come to the meeting or make their views known to their elected officials, or both. They should demand that NJ come to the table and agree to a thermal program!!

Just please do something positive!!

Hope this helps !!!

I could be wrong but aren't most of the guides up north for the salmon and steelie run??That may explain lack of attendance....The few guides I know have said they make more money this time of year than they do the rest of the season....Lots of big fish= lots of happy customers = big tips.....I think ur December meeting may have more guides do to the salmon being done and the main surge of fresh steelies done....Definitely understand ur frustrations but they gotta follow the bite....

I think what Jim is saying has some merit. We all know that Jim dabble in real estate up there so he does have some other vested interests in the fishery and its success.

One thing that has not been mentioned here is that if they keep the status quo or the FFMP the numbers of trout will stay where they currently are. I think that it is in the 1,000 per square rive mile. Thats not a large quantity of fish for a river that large. It is simple, more water increases surface area and more fish per mile.

I think that any institution that makes money from people who visit the area ie hotels, gas station owner, Hancock House Owner, or the local fly shops and campgrounds should be at these meetings. I doubt attendance is really high either. Twenty people could make a big difference. Additionally, every business in Roscoe should be in attendance as well. Almost everyone opens their wallet in that town either coming or going.

What is forgotten is that the average guide often lives trip to trip and has to keep traveling in order to eat. There are undoubtedly can make it to these events and more often than not they are the most vociferous on the internet.

If I were not based in Texas I would go because I simply love the river. Maybe average angers can come up with a dollar amount that they spend up there and multiply that by the thousands of people who do the same thing. That would be a more realistic number than most of the uber inflated models proposed by entities to statistically pad their stats.

Not taking sides, just putting information out there,

How's the fishing in Texas?

If you have 1,000 fish per mile increasing the flow doesn't increase the quantity of fish/mile. It does increase the capability of holding more I guess.

Hey,

If the guides aren't willing to step up and make their voices heard, I will not listen to them crying like babies on hot day in July.

They missed out on one great forum, the Water, Water Everywhere (WWE) meeting sponsored by FUDR.

Now they have the opportunity on December 3rd to meet with the decree parties reps directly to make their voices heard.

The next 3 months is when the new policy for June 1, 2016 will be revised, crying next July is too late.

Jim

I second that THANK YOU. Jim has been in there fighting from the very beginning and deserves a lot of credit for all the time and energy he has devoted to this cause.
