I've been using Gene and Ines out of the Capra in motel located in Hancock, NY for my shuttle service lately. They're reasonably priced and if your current shuttle can't handle you, you can always give Gene and Ines a call.
So why Gene and Ines. Well, prior to last night, I would have simply said that when you visit the Capra, they greet you with a smile and always seem happy to see me although they don't know me.
Yesterday I went to get a shuttle and not thinking, must have told them Buckingham to Lordville. Yeah, silly mistake. Needless to say, as I was passing Lordville there was Gene and Ines with my car. I figure they run a few shuttles simultaneously to be more efficient. I didn't think they were leaving my car there so I just continued on my way.
I was having a good time with myself and started rowing down the Long Eddy stretch around 9:30pm last night. It's a great workout if you keep rowing and don't stop. I thought about getting a motor but I think the workout is a good idea and shit... I'm going to need that workout to defend myself when this nut job decides he's going to kill me. That is if he doesn't fall over and collapse while getting out of his car... Ooops... lost track of my subject, Gene and Ines... Anyway, I pull into Long Eddy at 10:00pm (it's a lot of rowing, especially when you have Sponge Bob arms like me). I go to get my car and guess what.... No car. Was it stolen? Then it clicked, my car must be at Lordville... I wonder if they made a mistake or I accidentally told them Lordville instead of Long Eddy. Guess what... No cell phone service either! I could never figure out why they take your cell phone number in the first place. It's not like they can call you to say, "Hey, all is well"! Lucky for me, the bar was open and let me tell yah, what a nice place and everyone inside was nice. Before I continue with Gene and Ines, let me tell you about the bar! I walked in with my dog. I didn't have a leash because I left it in the car. He wasn't wet though, I keep him dry for the later part of the day. So the people in this place were just so friendly. I never expected anything like it. This is a real life Cheers! They were passing an accoustic guitar around the bar and each person would play a different song and they would all sing along. Anyway, they let me use the phone to call the Capra. Ines picked up and I asked her where they parked my car. Gene told me it's at Lordville. Well... As you can image, I was annoyed because how the hell am I going to leave $10,000 + thousands in fly fishing equipment in my boat while I walked to Lordville to get my car. I told Gene I thought I told him Long Eddy but could have made a mistake (and I probably did) but it didn't matter, Gene says, "I'm on my way". It's now 10:20 and he's in the car with Ines. So he has to come get me in Long Eddy, then drive me back to Lordville, then drive back to Long Eddy, then finally home. That's a lot of driving, it was late, and gas isn't free.
So for me to be able to call someone at 10:20 at night and they come pick me up without even hesitating. No complaining, nothing. Matter of fact, Ines insisted she sit with the boat so she could gaze at the stars and enjoy the river. She really enjoyed it. The fact is, they couldn't have been happier to come and help someone in need and I really needed it otherwise I would have been spending the night sleeping in the ship with the dog to keep me company (and warm).
Before Gene and Ines left, I asked what I owed them for what I thought was a terrible inconvenience. I think they just wanted to get out of the house and take a ride. They wouldn't accept my money. I asked to please let me pay for gas. They would not accept my money.
So I learned a few things about Gene and Ines (Not native to Hancock, but Greenwich Village, NY until not too long ago!) They also love the Magnolia bakery in NY.
Gene and Ines don't know me from a hole in the wall but they came out at 10:30 to help a perfect stranger. I rate them 5 stars. The banner I created and placed on the site is to help them get some shuttles. It's the least I can do. I'll also be visiting the bakery prior to my next trip.
If you're in Hancock or the Hancock area and need a shuttle, stop in the Capra and say hello to Gene and Ines. Bring them a pastry from your favorite bakery. You'll make them very happy and who knows, you might be the one stuck somewhere one day.
