Anybody do this?

Are there places where you feel comfortable buying tying materials online?

I am more of a novice tyer (although anybody who has seen my royals would say I'm quite capable). I expect the more advanced tyers to consider this some form of heresy.

Whatsayou?

I like the service I get from the following
jimsflyco for Hebert Miner and hen necks
Detteflies for just good service
feather-Craft for a good selection of everything.
whitetailflytying
The above also have very reasonable shipping

beetle beetle beetle your royal "antelope" looks allright being a novice my self i think untill you advance your patterns we'll see whos the big dawg in the novice tying world lol.... i have personally not bought any material online i got luck and bought front my wife aunts fathers saddles i bought like 6 full capes for 50 buck so i have a good amount of hackle material... but if your buying hackle and plan to tye a bunch of flies around the same size buy whiteing 100's quality hackle and there is surposed to be enough to tye 100 flies cheaper than buying a full cape i have found them for like $24 or so good capes are around 50 to 60 dollars

I prefer to purchase materials from a local shop but if they don't stock the item I'm looking for, I go mail order to either J Stockard or Feather-Craft.
They're both reputable mail order companies.

I too have used J Stockard and Orvis. I have had good luck on feathers and hair from both, but I prefer buying in person. For shops here in Jersey I have gone to Tight Lines and Shannons and I would recommend both. The Orvis shop in Marlton is nice too, especially with the Bose store right across the parking lot.

I personally like jstockard.com And bearsden.com
Both great to deal with. The one thing id tell you is that buying materials such as Hair, fur and hackle along with feathers you can search out better stuff in the store itself. Now dont get me wrong i will buy it from the stores listed but my expectations are never high.
Every now and again ill get some good stuff. Get to know the guys call them shoot the shit and tell them what your looking for .

They will usually take care of you . The stores i listed pride themselfs on customer service.

Hope this helps
Jamie

I like to go to the shop because if color is important to you, you don't know exactly what color you are getting from online stores. Go to you local fly shop and look at med dun capes. Look at the difference in color but they all are classified as med dun.
