Beulah Switch rods..

Trout Guy

Brookie's or Bust!
Well, being that its august already, Im starting to feel like im coming down with steelhead fever...

Last year i bought a cheapy switch rod at the FF show just to see if it was for me.

The rod works OK but also has a few issues since its a cheap $100 rod... No hook keeper and the fact the reel seat is cheaply maufactured. And is a bitch to get a reel off of it...

Ill end up giving the whole set up to the GF or use it as a backup.

So, now its time to get a wee bit more serious. My budget is under 500 bucks, so Im stuck between a Beulah classic 7/8 wt. switch rod and the Orvis access 8wt switch.

Just want to see if anyone has any comments on either.

Thanks...

While I have no personal experience with the Beulah switch rods, I know at least half a dozen fishing buddies that own them and love them. Mostly they own them for steelhead. And they are all fishing machines (my buddies that is).

Thanks for the input guys, i like the asthetics of the beulah.

But im an orvis guy at heart..

I think im gonna test cast both at the Beaverkill Angler this sunday.

I would take a look at the Scott L2H series. Unlike the Beulah it is made in the USA. The L2H series is also under 500 bucks. If you are going to be in the Roscoe area you can cruse up to west branch angler and test cast the Scott rod.

I have the Scott A3 11 1/2 8wt switch and love it. I use the Airflow Rage line on it and have fished everything from 8 foot Polly leaders to 15 feet of T-14 and the rod handles great.

IMHO the Beulah switch is a little on the short side to be your main switch rod.

Yo TG you can get a Z Axis switch for 500.00 online 11ft 7 weight.

I the entire z axis line is discontinued and is now replaced by the one line. Some shops already have one switch rods in stock..

very good info guys!! keep it coming!

Im leaning toward the beulah but the old z-axis intises me.. wish funds were more readily available..

My first switch rod was a beulah 8/9. I bought it for both salmon and steelhead. I love the rod and still have it, which I'd uncommon for me. I do wish it was 11' long, vs 10'6". I have owned the z-7110, i liked the 11' length, did not like the lacking backbone. If you go sage z, then get the 8wt.
