Best dry fly rod

WBDluver

Official NEFF pot stirrer
What have you found to be the best rod for fishing dry flys? Scott? Winston? Sage? What and why?

J.D. Wagner bamboo...7' 3wt. It has a nice subtle touch on the smaller stream I frequent in the summer months...smooth as silk and a nice soft tip for the hook set on 7x tippet...It is great for the N.J. wild trout streams that don't see fish bigger than 15"(and that would be a huge one) usually I get 'em 7'-10"...

Best all around rod..
The Winston classic trout 8' 5" 5 wt 3pc.....what a fantastic fishing rod...built by none other than Matt Grobert.......

This is a tough question; there are some variables that need to be considered. I would not use a 6 weight on a small stream. I like a shorter rod do accomplish that task, a 2 or 3 weight. On the big water where I would have to cast more line. I would also take into account wind conditions; I would use a 5 or 6 weight. Something I defiantly would not do is walk back to the car to get a different rod in the midst of a hatch because I did not feel I had the right dry fly rod. I am fond of Orvis rods. I do not believe they are any better than their competition. That is just my preference. With today’s technology they are all superbly engineered. My answer would be; the rod I would need to accomplish the task with the least amount of effort.

I agree with tom fly, it would have to be river and condition permitting. For the upper D, I love my old Sage RPL+ 9 foot for 5 weight. For NJ, I have a sweet little 7 1/2' Winston in 3 weight that gets the job done nicely. And then there's my 8 1/2 foot 4 weight....

TFO Bug Launcher 4-5 wt is awesome enough power to deliver a bigger fly but delicate enough to drop that size 24-26 trico just right.

Gotta answer a ? with a ?

How far will I have to cast?

Will it be calm or windy?

Am I flinging March Browns or Tricos?

Not every stick is optimal under all conditions, but I think the answer is, the one that gives you the most confidence in your ability to make a proper presentation. I have a Sage z axis for windy days but I have never been comfortable with fast action rods. I saved copper scrap money for two years to buy a winston b3x that is my favorite all around, but given my skillset , is useless in the wind. My local small stream rod is a TXL -F 3 weight.

One point about the Winston is that I break off a lot less on 5x and smaller tippet with the softer tip.

I always liked the old Zen master answer - the one in my hand.

The New Jersey answer - the one in my hand s**t for brains

Yea it figures thats how i guy from jersey would answer it. So you feel any rod is good for dry flies. But some are not. And the question is not about wind vs no wind, optimum temperture and humidity, sun, no sun. The question is what rod do you like to use for dry fly fishing?

I tried out Clutch Rods 9'6" for a 5wt and it cast beautifully however it had a crummy line on it. Paired up with a sweet line I think it's going to be a great fly rod.. The 8'6" 5wt Winston BIIX is hard to beat for an all around fly rod.. To many fly rods to little time..:)

That Winston is my favorite, too, except I didn't build mine.:crap:

I don't fish dries very often, but casting them with a Greys Streamflex 10' 3wt is a joy.

For dries on small streams it's a 3-way tie between a Loop Evotec 390, Scott SES 803 and the Sage LL 4711. For big water I almost always grab a Scott SES 905 unless it's trico times. I like the old Eclipse rods. Not as slow as the G, not as fast as the S3/S4 rods. I'm guessing I'd also like the G2. I've owned 8 Scott rods and I've loved casting 5 of those.

Anyone ever fish Scott?

I have a scott s4 and a4 both incredible rods. Only thing that sucks is getting them repaired. Price isnt bad but it sometimes will take 6-8 weeks which is why I have back ups. But I wouldn't say scott is a dry fly rod. Its more of an overall rod that can shoot streamers like a cannon. Close up small stream fishing...its not the best rod. I have them in 6 and 8 wts. my 10 foot 8wt is my striper rod which I have not found a better rod yet for that type of fishing.

on big water like the upper D,, I love my sage tcx 9ft 5wt..thats how fucking gangsters role..i could hit the front of the west br angler from the upper gamelands with no wind!!

How about the orvis 7'9 5wt far and fine. The old ones with the unsanded blanks. They are one of the smoothest rods. I also have a orvis otter 7ft 5 wt.It is a great limestoner fly rod that has no problem tossing big hoppers 60 ft on the letort, but can also lay a midge down at 20 ft nice and gentle.I am very partial to the old orvis unsanded blanks, but they are not big water rods.I also have a 7'9 orvis tippet 3wt and when I put a 4wt line on it the things a cannon.

holy shit!!! that 7'9 far and fine was my favorite rod of all time..i still have mine and would never part with it.the unsanded blank was very cool too..those full flex softer action rods were amazingly smooth almost like cane..it wasnt till i sarted fishing the bigger tailwaters of the upper d that that rod held me back..but i still caight more fish on that rod than any other and on smaller streams i still love to use it!
i have the unsanded original orvis one oz.. also.its 6 1/2 ft. 2wt..sweet baby stick for tiny streams

For bigger streams a 9 foot 4 weight SAGE ONE
Medium and larger small streams a 9 foot 3 weight SAGE ONE. It's also a killer West Branch Rod!
For tiny steams an 8'9" SAGE CIRCA is wonderful.

I hope this helps!
